It lies closer to the Northampton side. As the railroad bridge is now part of the rail trail, it is easy to stroll out and get a look at the island from above. Further, because of the cutting action of the river, the island's present location is south of its historic one. The cause here being the river itself eroding the north end of the island and depositing silt and other material on the southern end so that it appears the island is slowly creeping down the river.
