First Generation 1. James MARSH was born on 19 JUL 1794 in Hartford, Windsor, Vermont. He died on 3 JUL 1842 in Colchester, Chittenden, Vermont. He entered Dartmouth College in 1813. A college revival in 1815 changed his life and life-plans. He joined Hanover Congregational church Aug. 7, 1815; graduated valedictorian in 1817, and entered Andover. Was tutor at Dartmouth in 1818 and became engaged to Lucia Wheelock, dau. of John and niece of Pres. Wheelock; in 1820 returned to Andover, lost health by over-study in extras, and went south in 1822 and returned to his father's farm. Was invited to Princeton in 1824, but accepted a professorship in Hampden-Sidney college, Va.; ordained Oct. 12, he was married to Lucia Wheelock, Oct. 14, 1824, and reached Hampden-Sidney college Oct. 30. He became President of the University of Vermont in 1826. In 1833 he resigned the presidency for a professorship and devoted the rest of his life to taking by reading and reflection "a comprehensive view of all parts of knowledge, as constituting an organic whole." After his first sickness at Andover he was never strong. He left his great work in fragments which, with a memoir, were published by Prof. Torrey of Vermont University. D., son of Daniel and Marian (Harper) Marsh, was born in Hartford, July 19, 1794, and died in Colchester, July 3, 1842, aged 48 minus 16 days. He studied divinity at the Andover Theo. Sem. one year in the class of 1820; was tutor in Dartmouth from 1818 to 1820; returned to Andover and graduated in 1822; was ordained an evangelist in Hanover, N.H., Oct. 12, 1824; became professor of languages in Hampden, Sydeny College, Va., from 1824 to 1826; was president of the University of Vermont form 1826 to 1833, and then professor of Moral and Mental Philosophy to his death. He was an estimable man, an elaborate scholar, and a profound thinker, Columbia College, N.Y., conferred his honorary degree in 1830, and Amherst College in 1833. He published his inaugural address as president of the University of Vermont; Essay to Coleredge's "Aids to reflection;" Selections from the old English writers on Practical Theology; Translation of Herder's Hebrew poetry; a short treatise on eloquence, "Hegewisch's Chronology," and many articles in periodicals. He married, 1st, Lucia, daughter of James Wheelock, D. C., 1776, of Hanover, N.H., Oct. 14, 1824. 2d, Laura, her sister, January 7, 1835. James MARSH and Lucia WHEELOCK were married on 14 OCT 1824.
