    3. This is to supplement Penny's message below: All of the counties of Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin were Hampshire County from 1662 until: Franklin County 1811 Hampden Co. 1812 Also there is the Probate Court of Springfield if you cannot locate info you seek in the Northampton or Greenfield. Cynthia List Adm.for Ma-Bay-Colony@rootsweb.com Bunnydust@comcast.net ----- Original Message ----- From: Pennington Geis To: MAHAMPSH-L@rootsweb.com Hampshire County is the "mother county" in western Mass. Franklin County split off -- hmm -- can't remember the year right now. But Wendell was once part of Hampshire County and is now in Franklin County. Birth and death records are kept by the town clerk in Massachusetts. The Hampshire/Franklin Court District has courthouses in both Greenfield (Franklin County) and Northampton (Hampshire County). Records for events that occurred while Hampshire County encompassed the entire area are probably still in the Northampton Courthouse. There is a card file in the office of the Superior Court in Northampton that indexes most court actions by last name. I am not able to find this town in Hampshire county. Could anyone help? Researching Ephraim Butler and his son, Rufus. Thank you.
