Almira Deborah, youngest child of William and Deborah (Buell) Baxter, of Rutland, Vt. and had the following children: Henry Joseph b. 13 Nov 1828 Caroline Agnes b. 24 Jan 1832; d. 8 June 1832 Edgar b. 10 April 1834; d. 3 Jan 1836 Caroline Louisa b. 6 June 1837 Henry Joseph (above) was a resident of Washington D.C. and his daughter Caroline Louisa, lived at home with her parents. Pg. 148 Baxter Family Family of Hon. James Baxter Hon. James Baxter was descended in a direct line from Rev. Richard Baxter of Nonconformist memory, and was b. in Norwich, Vt. 21 Dec 1788. He commenced mercantile business at Stannard Plain in 1817 and 14 Sept 1819 m. Caroline, dau of William Baxter, ESQ of Rutland, Vt. She was b. 10 Feb 1795. In 1829 he was elected to the Provincial Parliment and was the first member sent from Stanstead County. in 1832 he was appointed by the Governor General a member of the Legislative Council, which office he held until the time of his death, 13 Nov 1837. Caroline, his wife, d. 18 April 1865. Children: Harriet b. 4 Oct 1821 m. William B Palmer, Esq. She d. 18 April 1845. George W. b. 1 July 1824 Charles B. b. 5 Jan 1826 James b. 28 July 1831 Pg. 6 James In the section on settling the area: The County of Stanstead The immediate result of the creation of new counties was an increase of the number of members in the Provincial Parliment- of these Stanstead County furnished from one to two. Among it's representatives, up to 1847, were Hon. Ebenezer Peck, Hon. James Baxter, Marcus Child, Esq., Col. Wright Chamberlain and Col. John McConnel. P. 104 James Stanstead Seminary The lot comprising the site of this institution was given by J. Langdon, Esq., of Montpelier, Vt. and Wm. Grannis, Esq., of Stanstead. The building was begun and completed in 1829. The estimated cost $2,500 was divided into shares of $25 each. The shares were sold , but the estimate was not sufficient to finish the building, and the deficiency, amounting to $700, was made up by equal donation from Ichabod Smith, Wilder Pierce and James Baxter. 33 P. In the section in the front of the book on clearing and settling of the area there is the settling of Rock Island. "The Old Yellow Store" was built in 1809 by Hon. Timothy Hinman. It was occupied by Nehemiah Colby, of Derby (Vt). The property has passed through various hands and is now owned by the Heirs of the Hon. P. Baxter. The store has been successively occupied by Baxter & Chamberlin, Baxter & Edmonds, Judd, Bates & hOlmes, Judd, Bates & Wood, Baxter, French & Haskell, P. & J. W. Baxter and Porter & WIley. Pg. 35 Portus In the settling of Beebe Plain Hon. Portus Baxter built a store which has been succesively occupied by Butler & Gilman, Gilman & Holmes, Gilman & Jones and George R. Holmes.
