New England Historic-Genealogical Register IF...Improprations fund: maintenance of Puritan Preachers in England; subscriptions indicate interest in the Puritan movement. ================== *____Abrie: perhaps John Abrie of Cheapside, merchant, a subscriber to the Impropriations Fund[ IF] *Adams, Thomas: of London, wollen-draper. Son of John of Wem,Salop, by Margaret, dau of John Erpe of Shrewsbury. in 1647, when an alderman of London, he was sent to the Tower for treason to the Parliment. He married Anne, dau of Humfrey Mapled of Printon,Essex. [ E.F., FF, MR] *Aldersey, Samuel of Allhallows, haberdasher. Son of John of Aldersey,Cheshire, by Anne, sister of Sir Thomas Lowe, London; Samuel mar. first Mary, dau of Philip Van oyrle of Nornberg and Antwerp; 2d/w Margaret, dau of Thomas Offspring and sister of Rev.Charles, of London, widow of William Kedward. Aldersey was a prominent Puritan who contributed heavily to the Improprations fund in 1626. Samuel's sister, Elizabeth married 1st William Pitchford and 2d, Thomas Conventry. Alice mar. Thomas Moulson and her son, Thomas was husband of Anne Ratcliffe. [if anyone has this line....there is more info...page 132] E.,F.,FF,H,MR,IF * Andrews, Richard of London; haberdasher and alderman; perhaps resided at Cheapside as Winthrop addressed a letter "to the Mermaid" there. Andrews was particulary close to the Plymouth Plantation. IF * Andrewes, Thomas of London, leather-seller. Son of Robert of Feltham,Middlesex; he was sheriff of London 1642 and Lord Mayor in 1649 and he proclaimed the abolition of kingly government. He was a Plymouth Adventurer and one of those that sold out their interest to the Planters in 1626 and his wife may have been Darmaris Cradock. He was present at the MBC. * Archer, John or Henry: Most likely was Henry as he is mentioned in "John White" pages. He was the MBC chaplain and admitted to the freedom of the MBC,1629 * Arnold, Andrew: possibly a member of a Somerset family, 2 of that family emigrated to New England F, FF * Backhouse, William of Swallowfield, Berks; son of Samuel of that place, Wm born about 1593; "became a reknown chymist, Rosicrucian, and encourager of those that studied chymistry and astrology, especially Elias Ashmole,whom he adopted. Wrote several books; died 30 May 1662. H * Ballard, Daniel: at company meeting 17 April 1629; in 1645 he was an associate of John White, probably as counselor, as receiving money from Sir Richard Saltonstall. F, FF, MR * Barnardiston, Sir Nathaniel of Ketton, Suffolk . A knight; Winthrop mentions his intentions to become an adventurer in 1630 ; his will proved Sept 1653 , he left a legacy for bringing up of Indian children in the college of New England. * Bateman, ____: was at the meeting of 29 Sept 1629; he may have been Robert B. who was interested in the Virginia Company and he was Chamberlain of London. His wife was Joan Munser from Weymouth so he may have known the John White of Dorchester [in Mass.] * Bellingham, Richard: original assoicate of the Patentees but took no active part while the company held courts in England, he emigrated to New England in 1634. -------------- Cynthia administrator for: [email protected] Need lookup?
