> Postings of the "History of Hartford VT" to the list, > would be VERY welcome.....especially the land divisions !! > Cynthia > listowner The doings of ancestor Rowland Powell at "The 2nd Divison of Fifty Acre Lots" just gets weirder the closer I look at it, and cries out the more for hints leading toward explanation. Some (a few) of the individual land descriptions from the Second Division of Fify Acre Lots include the date November 2, 1776 -- so I revise my old date guess to be 1776. For Rowland Powell's part in the Second Division of Fifty Acre Lots: "The following is a Survey of one hundred and fifty acres of Land Laid out in Hartford to Rowland Powell Junr[?][.] Beginning by the rode on White River by the Rocky Mountain and running [...hither and yon...] to the place of beginning[.] then pitched [drew lots for] the Land in the above Survey to original Right of Daniel Newcomb for his Second Hundred and and [sic] Second fifty acre pitches [illegible] Hundred No. 59. [new line] [illegible] Rowland Powell Jr[?]" (Where "Junior" really means "the third," maybe, and the date might be November 2, 1776.) BUT!!! Three years later, in 1779, comes the deed. Well, I suppose the deed had to wait until Rowland paid the money for the land. But, the above says the land was Daniel Newcomb's. But, the seller on the deed is George Smith! And George Smith doesn't even live in Windsor County!!! He lives in Cumberland County, VT, which doesn't exist!!!!!! But the land isn't in Windsor Co., any more, but in Cumberland Co., so that must get back to the fight between NY and NH over VT. Which clarifies nothing. Anyway, I'm left wondering what wall this George Smith came off of, as well as the true date of the Second Division of Fifty Acre Lots, as well as why Daniel Newcomb wasn't paid for his own land, but rather some stranger (Mr. Smith) was. Verification of a flip-flop of Windsor Co. from Windsor Co. into Cumberland Co. then back into Windsor Co. would help too. Also, why the Second Division was such a very, very, very long time after Hartford was founded in 1761. I would think it would have been much earlier.
