List: Have received this message from Rootsweb which has been in process of upgrading.....please read the message below as it will affect all of us on the mailing list. Cynthia list moderator ---------- Original Message ---------------------------------- Date: Thu, 7 Dec 2000 01:28:55 -0800 As was stated in an earlier (a week or so ago) message, RootsWeb will be upgrading its lists3.rootsweb.com mail server. This is desperately needed! You may have a few questions. Q: How do I know if any of *my* mailing lists will be affected during the move? A: An alphabetical listing of all mailing lists that will be impacted by the upgrade can be found at: Q: When will the upgrade take place? A: The upgrade will commence Friday, 8 December 2000 at 7:00 A.M. Pacific Standard Time (GMT -08:00) Q: How will the upgrade impact my ability to maintain mailing list(s)? A: Starting at 7:00 A.M. (PST), lists3.rootsweb.com will be unavailable. We expect the entire upgrade to take 10 hours. Lists3 will not process mail for most of that time. Q: Will people still be able to post to mailing lists during the upgrade? A: Yes and No. - No messages will be lost, though will be delayed. - Messages will not be posted to mailing lists until *after* the upgrade/move is fully completed. Q: Will I be able to use my lists3.rootsweb.com utility page during the upgrade? A: Yes, but: - No subscribe/unsubscribe commands will be lost, though they will be delayed. - When the move is completed, your old utility page will automatically be redirected to the new list server. Be sure to bookmark the new location. - If you use old-fashioned X-Commands (most of you don't), and get a "suspicious format" error, send all X-Commands to lists7.rootsweb.com instead of lists3.rootsweb.com. Q: Will anything be lost during the upgrade? A: If your list settings or files (welcome message, accept list, etc.) are updated while we are in the process of moving your list to the new server, all changes may be lost. Please be sure to review your entire list setup upon the upgrade's completion. Q: What do I do if I find "bugs" after the upgrade? A: If all goes well, there won't be any bugs to report. Right. But if you do happen to spot some anomalies (new anomalies, not the ones that are inherent in SmartList that we've been living with for four-odd years now), post a message to listowners-L@rootsweb.com Sincerely, Vicki Lindsay Thauvin RootsWeb List
