> From: C Anderson <vermont1791@yahoo.com> > > Cousin Lester - > What are the names of the heirs to Rowland and Mary > (Richardson) Powell. This is on a quitclaim deed dated May 7, 1801, wherein the heirs of Rowland Powell 4th give whatever property Rowland 4th had left to son Luther Powell in exchange for the Goshen, VT land that son John Powell had been the original grantee of and that Rowland 4th had bought from John. The heirs other than Luther plan to divvy up the Goshen, VT land among themselves. The heirs listed on the quitclaim deed are (with my marginal marks added): Clarissa Powell Zebulon Delano Lusina Delano Thomas Savage <-- A hubby-in-law Molly Savage <-- Undoubtedly a daughter Isaac Chamberlin <-- A hubby-in-law Lucy Chamberlin <-- Undoubtedly a daughter Calvin Powell <-- A known son Elisha Powell <-- A known son John Powell <-- A known son Elisha Whitcome <-- A hubby-in-law Cloe Whitcome <-- Undoubtedly a daughter Rowland Powell <-- A known son Stephen Tilden Jr Stephen & Lowena Powell Luram Powell (Among the "attests" is a Garatia or Haratia Powell) (This is Vermont-style handwriting, so the actual spelling -- the actual names -- could be doggone near anything.) (The Delano's might perhaps be "heirs" via a business arrangement.) I imagine that some or all of the unknown Powells above are undocumented kids of Rowland 4th, maybe who got themselves born at Brimfield, Hampshire Co., MA. > Some relatives have told me that > both Rowland and Mary are buried in Delano Cemetery > aka the old Savage Farm, some say It's actually the Powell cemetery. The Delanos bought Rowland Powell 4ths farm, and on the deed, Rowland specifically excepted the burial ground from the sale. The "History of Hartford" (by William Howard Tucker, 1889) lists these graves in the "Delano" Cemetery: Mrs. Mary Anne Powell (Luther Powell's wife), Rowland Powell (the 4th), Mrs. Molly Savage (a daughter as shown above), Mrs. Mary Anne Powell (Ms. Richardson), Mrs. Chloe Whitcomb (a daughter as shown above), and a whole bunch of others of no interest. The cemetery is described as "in a deplorable condition," with various headstones knocked over, missing, or unreadable. (I have only a few photocopy pages from the book, all of which are out of focus.)
