    1. [CRV] Bodman Ltr from Lewis Bodman to his Luther Bodman
    2. I received a jpg file this afternoon from Guy Bishop (Bishopline@aol.com) in which he shared the following letter. Guy has the original letter dated Feb. 12, 1849. I thought this might be of interest to the readers of the list. I believe Lewis & Luther were sons of Luther Bodman of Williamsburg, Mass. Luther Bodman md. Philena Hawks, dau. of Israel Hawks & Mary (Polly) Mitchell. Lewis Bodman md. Emily Caroline Nash dau of Elisha Nash & Experience Claghorn. Oliver - I believe this to be Oliver Nash - brother to Emily Caroline Nash. Dear Brother, Oliver starts for Ohio in the morning - I went to Northampton to day, & raised $1500 for him to take out for the purpose of driving hogs.  I wrote to Jos.  a short time since that if he could buy small hogs for 1-½ to 1-¾ that he might commence buying at once, and Oliver would bring out funds - I got his answer Sat. eve.  & raised the funds to-day - Mr. Williams say he will do anything but lend money to go to California - says he should rather do almost anything than aid, or assist in aiding the gold fever.  Jos. has about 100 hogs on hand and I think will get 6 or 800 head by early in March. If his Pail ash is not sold I think it better be.  I should like to get hold of the bal [balance] if its avails, as I paid for his good at C. H. & Co. last Spring - 400 $ I  conclude he has made a/c [account] of 3 or 400 $ worth of cloth left and sent to him this past season.  Hawkins  expects to take change of the hogs after they are bot [bought]. Yours &c Lewis Bodman Feb 12 1849.

    1. [CRV] Researcher with connections to Rowe, Mass.
    2. My focus for now will be to computerize the genealogy information from the book: "The History of Rowe, Massachusetts, by Percy Whiting Brown, 2d edition, Privately Published, 1935, Cleveland, Ohio, Printed by A. D. Williams Company, 114 pages." I copied this book at the Denver Public Library, while in Denver in June. My database has grown to a little over 191,000 individual names, mostly for the descendants of early settlers to Hartford, Conn (that married into the Webster, Treat, Marsh, Martin families and others) and early settlers of Franklin County, Mass. The Webster & Marsh families were early settlers of Hadley, Mass. and ended up marrying into many of the early families that settled in Hampshire, Berkshire and Franklin counties. I have limited information on the settlers of Rowe, Mass. If any of the readers on the list would be interested in sharing their family genealogy for their families that resided in Rowe, I will merge it into the database and share the information developed and linked. My area of interest remains the settlers prior to 1850, however, I will frequently carry family lines up to and into the early 1900's in order to link extended family genealogies. I have updated my list of old published genealogies, town history & vital records, and cemetery record computerized and if you'd like a copy, send me a e-mail. Again, the focus here is Franklin County, Mass. Please contact me directly @ Paul W. Allred - pwallred@aol.com

    1. [CRV] From "The History of Rowe, Mass."
    2. The History of Rowe, Massachusetts, by Percy Whiting Brown, 2d edition, Privately Published, 1935, Cleveland, Ohio, Printed by A. D. Williams Company. p. 11. Apparently John Stoddard had bargained with Moses Rice for the erection of some sort of a fort on the hill tops of Rowe. Moses Rice had come from Rutland to be the first settler in Charlemont.* He built his first cabin in the spring of 1743 near a buttonwood tree that is still standing a few rods from the Charlemont bridge. In June 1755, twelve years later, Captain Rice was killed and scalped by Indians and his remains buried nearby. The grave is marked by a small monument which was dedicated in 1871. * The first mention of Charlemont is in a deed from Phineas Stevens to Othniel Taylor dated Nov. 3, 1742, in which it is called "Checkley's Town, otherwise called Charlemont.

Josiah Yale's Co., for twenty days in Oct. 1781, and was at Stillwater. He served in Capt. John Bacon's Co., nine days, from Oct. 20 - 28, 1781, and in Captain Well's Co., 3d Berkshire county Reg't eight days, from Oct. 30 to Nov. 7, 1781. Ashbel TREAT died about 1780 in Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts. The Treat Family, by John Harvey Treat, A.M., The Salem Press Publishing & Printing Company, Salem, Massachusetts, 1893. p. 44. Named after his uncle, probably, Rev. Ashbel Woodbridge. In 1757, Mr. Treat served in the French war eight days, in Capt. John Fellow's company; went to Fort Edward for the relief of Fort Wm. Henry. In 1760, he served in the same company from May 7 to Nov. 18. The muster rolls of the French wars are very imperfect, and furnish very little information as to actual amount of service. He must have come to Lenox very early. The town was incorporated in 1767. According to the records he was elected to the following offices: constable, March 14, 1768; hog reeve, March 23, 1769; warden, March 23, 1772; hog reeve and surveyor of highways, March 25, 1773; school committee, March 21, 1774. The names of Ashbel and John Treat, his brother, are appended to "the Covenant signed in Lenox, July 14, 1774," wherein the signers agreed that they would "not import, purchase or consume any goods, wares, or manufactures which shall arrive in America from Great Britain." He died intestate, and administration was granted Feb.29, 1780. He left a widow, Dorcas, and nine children, including Aaron and Amy, whose names do not appear in the town records. Ashbel TREAT and Dorcas WATERMAND were married. 25. Dorcas WATERMAND was born in 1728. She died on 8 AUG 1804 in Auburn, Cayuga, New York. Ashbel TREAT and Dorcas WATERMAND had the following children: i. Dorcas TREAT was born on 5 NOV 1756 in Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts. ii. Anne TREAT was born on 30 OCT 1759 in Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts. She died on 5 JUL 1773. iii. Lucinda TREAT was born on 21 DEC 1761 in Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts. iv. Ashbel TREAT was born on 13 MAY 1764 in Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts. He died on 14 APR 1842 in Mentz, Cayuga, New York. The Treat Family, by John Harvey Treat, A.M., The Salem Press Publishing & Printing Company, Salem, Massachusetts, 1893. p. 58. Mr. Treat was a soldier of the Revolution and received a pension. In April 1781, he volunteered for nine months at Salisbury, Conn., under Captain Sheperd, in Colonel Cortland's New York Reg't, joining it at Fishkill, N.Y. With a part of the regiment, under Lieut. Colonel Weissenfels, he was soon detached and stationed at Saratoga until his enlistment expired. In March, 1782, he enlisted at Lenox for two years, with Captain Posey, or Pearcy, in Colonel Willetts' New York Reg't, which he joined at Albany, thence he marched up the Mohawk river to Fort Hunter. After remaining six weeks, he with a part of the regiment was ordered to Fort Plank and Plain, for the winter, thence in Jan., 1783, he marched west by way of Fort Stanwix, now Rome, N.Y.; then across Lake Oneida, to within about a mile of Oswego, but soon returned to Fort Plain, where he was discharged in June, 1783. Soldiers sent to the above named forts were actively employed in the perilous duty of scouting the surrounding wilderness to protect the frontier settlements from the approach of hostile Indians and tories, with which the central part of New York was every year invaded, in addition to those under Brandt and Johnson. According to the New York archives he was also a fifer in Colonel Whitney's Reg't, under Captain King. About 1794, he removed to Throopville, Cayuga county, near Auburn, N.Y., where he was soon followed by his brothers, John, Isaac, Moses and Aaron, who all settled in the same town. There is still a locality called the "Treat Settlement." All had families but Isaac, and their descendants continue to reside in the vicinity. Was a farmer. I regret that I have been unable to get much information about these families. Children, most of them born in Throopville. 12 v. John TREAT. vi. Isaac TREAT was born on 15 MAY 1769 in Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts. He died. The Treat Family, by John Harvey Treat, A.M., The Salem Press Publishing & Printing Company, Salem, Massachusetts, 1893. p. 44. Died no issue. vii. Moses TREAT was born on 14 MAR 1771 in Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts. The Treat Family, by John Harvey Treat, A.M., The Salem Press Publishing & Printing Company, Salem, Massachusetts, 1893. p. 59. Was a farmer. viii. Mary TREAT was born on 11 MAR 1773 in Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts. ix. Aaron TREAT was born in Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts. He died in Conquest, Cayuga, New York. The Treat Family, by John Harvey Treat, A.M., The Salem Press Publishing & Printing Company, Salem, Massachusetts, 1893. p. 59. He kept a hotel in Conquest, N.Y. x. Amy TREAT died on 17 DEC 1828 in Shoreham, Addison, Vermont. She was born in Lenox, Berkshire, Massachusetts.

    3. Wilma: Sorry for the delay, but I did find something that may or may not help. According to Jones, Elizabeth E. Boice, Captain John Grout of Watertown and Sudbury, Massachusetts and some of his descendants : a contribution toward a genealogy of the Grout and allied families with special reference to the line of Henry Whittemore Grout of Waterloo, Iowa Waterloo, Iowa: H.W. Grout, 1922, 141 pgs. Page 67 shows a Daniel GEER, born 15-June-1700, son of Daniel and ? Geer. Daniel Geer married Abigail Spicer 31-May-1750. The book does not carry this line any further. Daniel(1) settled at Preston, Connecticut, where his children (including Daniel(2) were born. (If you think this may be your Daniel, let me know, there is more info.) This information seems to have been copied from the Geer genealogy which shows your Abel as the son of this Daniel. Source: Geer, Walter,Genealogy of the Geer family in America from 1635 to 1914 New York: T.A. Wright, 1914, 286 pgs. Page 30-31: Daniel, Jr. (Daniel2, George1), was born 15 June 1700; died _____; marfried Abigail Spicer 31 May 1750. Children: 32 (1) Roger, born 18 May, 1753; married 24 November 1774, Keziah Tucker. (2) Robert, born 25 November, 1754; married Salvina Gates 33 (3) Nathan, born 12 December 1756; married 1st Mary Gates; marrie 2nd Olive Gates, sister of Salvina Gates. (4) Abel, born 27 May, 1759. (5) Jacob, mnarried Tammy Partridge (6) Abigail, married Stephen Herrick. (7) Mary, married Zoath Tucker (8) Alathea, married Eleazer Herrick As can be seen, there is no more about Abel in this book. Interestingly, there was a John Spicer who married a Mary Geer in Groton, CT and had sedveral children. While my source only provides info on one child (a son), it might be worth checking out. Hope this helps a little.
