** PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THIS MESSAGE IN SUCH A WAY THAT YOUR REPLY GOES TO THE MAILING LIST. ** Greetings: I apologize for what I see as the need to send this message, and for duplicates that you may receive. I am *NOT* inviting discussion on this topic. Far from it. But, with recent events and news reports, some announcement seems to me to be in order. Fortunately, I am talking about something which is NOT a problem on our list right now. Let's help it stay that way. There are some nasty new strains of malicious programs, such as the MSBLASTER worm, which have been turned loose on an unsuspecting and undeserving public. (There is no use wondering about the immature and corrupted nature of a person who would do such a thing.) We are well past the point where not opening attachments can protect us from infection through e-mail. If you are running any form of Microsoft Windows, it is an ABSOLUTE NECESSITY that you have an up-to-date antivirus program installed on your computer and properly set up. There are any number of good ones. Use one, and keep it current. Second, malicious programs LIE. They lie about what they are doing. If they come in e-mail, they lie (in their teeth) about who sent them. This is very important to understand. If an infection *seems* to come from a RootsWeb mailing list, it is a lie. If it seems to come from a person with whom you have corresponded, it *may* be a lie. Third, virus alerts, scam alerts, and SPAM alerts are ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN on this mailing list, unless sent by the list admin -- who is myself. There are **NO EXCEPTIONS**. Such alerts are often incorrect, and frequently continue hoaxes that can be as damaging as a virus. ("I found this virus on my computer. I may have infected you, so if you find this virus on your computer please delete it." So you do -- and there goes a Windows Operating System file you need.) The most important thing is that even if this information is correct, this mailing list is NOT the place to post it. For more information, see any of the antivirus programs' web sites. Another good basic resource may be found at: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ Look in the left column, and scroll down a bit until you see the link: http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/announce.html#virus Again, I apologize for what I see as the need for this message, and for possible duplicates. I also remind you NOT TO REPLY TO THE LIST. My private address is below. You can discuss almost anything with me through that address, without recriminations. We use Norton and we update it each and every day without fail. Be especially careful if you have been away for several days and your computer has been turned off-- it can not download updates when the computer is off. We do not wait for the diley up date to come we go to Nortons site each and every day first thing in the morning and download. Then we scan. Here is the website for the Connecticut Gravestone Network... the same one I discussed in my last email. http://www.ctgravestones.com/ Cynthia
Lists: I was at the East Hartford Center Cemetery and while I was there, there was a fellow who was apparently checking some old gravestones, eventually his curosity got the best of him and he came over and intro himself, He is Raymond Tubbs, president of Friends of Center Cemetery ! What luck !! of course I took the opportunity to explain about the Mass Bay Colony and the Conn.River Valley mailing list for genealogist.. In the course of conversation, I asked him about the earliest cemeteries for Hartford and East Hartford and he told me that there are NO gravestone prior to 1709, they all have been destroyed in name of progress, weather, vandalism, and so on. Mr.Tubbs also gave me the email of a lady who does research with the old cemeteries, she is Ruth Shapleigh-Brown and she is at the Connecticut Gravestone Network.......this may be a worth while contact especially if you are seeking stones prior to 1709.... The Connecticut Gravestone Network is a volunteer organization that works to protect what members call Connecticut's outdoor museums-the resting place for residents' ancestors, which also display the last remains of artwork and communications from the centuries past. The group shares information with others through cemetery tours, programs and symposiums that teach safe conservation techniques of gravestones and tombs. The organization welcomes historical societies, genealogists and all others who are interested in preserving history, gravestone artwork or old epitaphs, and publishes a quarterly newsletter that informs members about ongoing projects, research, vandalism alerts and other related news, as well as preservation and law information concerning old cemeteries. Members also advocate documenting old graveyards and filing copies with a cemetery's respective community historical society and library, as well as the Connecticut State Library. To reach the network, call 860-643-5652 or write to Executive Director Ruth Shapleigh-Brown, 135 Wells St., Manchester, CT, 06040-6127. The East Hartford pictures will be up around the weekend....many different names..... but the names that were requested....NONE EXIST...many of the later generations had stones so I took what I found and hopefully you can work with those names. Now I will go and put calmine lotion on my black fly bites Cynthia list admin for Mass Bay Colony http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/MA-BAY-COLONY subscribe Ma-Bay-Colony-L-request@rootsweb.com

Phil: Montague is just up the road from Deerfield, not even 5 miles..... little bit of background on Montague.... 1754: established as "District of Montague".......this tract of land was taken from Sunderland. 1775: made a town Section or villages of Montague: Lake Pleasant....Millers Falls...Turners Falls....Montague City... Montague Center. Your Josiah could have lived at Deerfield prior to Montague... as the settlers were still "clustered" for defense in 1740's and 50's. The French Indian war started up around 1754. In your case, you should check both towns..... forwarding this for Barbara....offering look ups ----- Original Message ----- From: The Pahlows To: Cyndy and John Sent: Sunday, August 17, 2003 9:51 AM Subject: Re: Deerfield (off-list) I am having a problem posting to the list with my registered email address--I'll fix that later (going up to NEHGS today!) What I wanted to tell them: any massacre victims (including Benoni Stebbins) are buried in a mass grave in the Old Burying Ground. Also, I toured that cemetery earlier this year and most of the stones are readable. There is a marker at the site of the Benoni Stebbins homestead that I did take a picture of; I can send that to whoever wants to see it. It tells how he held the French and Indian attackers off for 3 hours--he was killed, but before it was all over "the French had lost their Lieutenant and the Indians had lost their Chief." Finally, the Smead researchers should try and find "The Nims Family: Seven Generations of Descendants From Godfrey Nims". There are hundreds of Smeads listed in the index--I do have it--can do lookups. If you saw my post go through on the list, please disregard. Otherwise, could you forward this to the list and later I'll probably unsubscribe/resubscribe with a different email account. Barbara Pahlow Providence, RI

Thanks to Janece Streig, the section from the 1884 History of Middlesex Co., CT, concerning the early settlers of Chatham and their descendants is now on line. This section was so long, and so full of names, that I've divided it into Parts 1 & 2. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/ You'll find it in the Biography section of the site or, as usual, look in the What's New section for the links along with all the other new data that's gone on line recently. There are a number of wonderful volunteers who are transcribing records from Salem, MA, Coralynn Brown is working on the Barbour records for New London, CT, and I just added a 1904 directory of the 1st Church of Christ in Hartford, CT. There are well over 800 files now on line! Jane Devlin List Mom
