    1. [CRV] Your 1600s American Ancestors Update
    2. First Families
    3. Hello Everyone: Those of you who are working on your lines back to your 1600s American Ancestors will find the1600s Ancestors Data Base to be of great help. My recent posting updates to the Data Base has taken it to over 26,500 Ancestors who have descendants living today. I have also added several National Societies who have proven many of these Ancestors. Also at this time a few new respected Reference works that contain thousands of sources including some of the early colonists who have Royal Blood lines. All the entries are coded to indicate to which reference work or which National Society has at least one of their proven lines. Several of the National Societies have over 20 different lines from a single Ancestor. When you enter the 1600s Ancestor Data Base be sure to look at the top of each data page for the link that takes you to the "Data Base Information Page" Here you will find the codes and references listed and how to use them. This is must reading to understand the Data Base. We are constantly updating the Data Base with additional Ancestors added as time permits. You will find the 1600s Ancestor Data Base at: http://www.firstfamilies.org/db/ Everyone has FREE access to all our web site and the reports contained there. Lucy is considered the first African Americam to write a poem. The poem is called "Bars Fight." It is about the 1704 Indian Attack on Deerfield. Individuals mentioned are Samuel Allen, Eunice Allen, Eleazer Hawks, Oliver Amsden, Samuel Amsden, Adonijah Gillet, and John Saddler. Others, like one of my relatives, are not mentioned. It appears there were several attacks on Deerfield over the years. There is info. on all this on Google. 3. SunflowerLists: CAPTORS AND CAPTIVES, The 1704 French and Indian Raid of Deerfield; Kevin Sweeney, University of Massachusetts Press, Amherst,Mass., 2003 @ 29.95 ------- In THE REPUBLICAN, a Springfield newspaper, there is an article about a NEW book on Deerfield, (Franklin Co.,Mass.) and it's being released this month. For those who are interested in history or have ancestors in the area, would be interested in this book. ------ quote>> his book covers more captives to give a fuller picture of the impact of the raid, and what happened to the 112 men, women, and children..........most of the captives stayed with the French rather than the Indians and most captives eventually returned home. What we did is cast the net a little wider. The raid occurred when Deerfield (Pocomtuck) was an outpost of 275 men, women, and children, with 20 soldiers guarding them. It was the farthest northeastern settlement in New England. The attack made Deerfield a symbolic target for the French and Indians who wanted to halt the English expansion. On the morning of the of Feb.29,1704, according to the new book, some 250-300 Abenakis, French, Hurons, Mohawks, Pennacooks, and Iroquois broke through the stockade defenses, killing 50 and taking 112 captive. The colonist killed 11 attackers and wounded 22. It was a most devastating assult on the colonial village anywhere in New England, New France, and New York.! Deerfield has always had a special place in American history. This attack altered the future course of the north American continent. Not every Deerfield captive was welcomed into the new community as Eunice Williams may have been. Recently discovered manuscript telling the account of captive Joseph Kellogg, the manuscript was found stored in the historical archives in Philadelphia, and the book also gives the accounts from several Indians The end of the book , all of the names of the captives and their fate, of Deerfield colonist, also the names of Indians and French that were involved. <<quote -- You can order from the Old Deerfield Museum (I already did) http://www.historic-deerfield.org/store/bookpages/captors_captives. html -- FYI: The UNREDEEMED CAPTIVE was written in 1994 which was a play on the Rev.John William's dau , Eunice ........was the first modern book written to tell the story of Eunice who was captured in Feb 29,1704 and never returned to Deerfield (she married an Indian and stayed with them in Canada) http://www.historic-deerfield.org/store/bookpages/3867.html (reprint of original published in 1707) --- BOY CAPTIVE OF OLD DEERFIELD http://www.historic-deerfield.org/store/bookpages/3875.html -- Boy Captive of Canada (Stephen Williams) http://www.historic-deerfield.org/store/bookpages/3876.html -- Ransom for Mercy Carter http://www.historic-deerfield.org/store/bookpages/8597_mercy_carter .html -- Not about captives but photos of "Old Deerfield" before and after and history. Genealogy of the Bliss Family in America, Volume I, Compiled by Aaron Tyler Bliss, Published by the Author, 1982, Midland, Michigan. p. 67. He was one of the early settlers of the town, it being then known as 'Springfield Mountain." The first family settled there in 1731, a second came the following year, five more came in 1733 and by 1741, the number of families had increased to twenty-four, when they were set off January 6, 1741 as the fourth parish of Springfield. Among the names of families then incorporated were those of Abel and Nathaniel Bliss (the latter being a son of Samuel Bliss and Sarah Stebbins of Longmeadow.) Abel's first Child, the ninth birth in the place, born November 20, 1736 9 (O.S.) indicates that Abel was an early settler. He is reputed to have had an iron constitution and great physical strength, and tradition says that he "did carry six bushels of salt on his back, all at one time, and stand under eight. "It is said that he cut the path from Springfield to Wilbrahm - about ten miles. He received an Ensign's commission unde Col. Worthington of Springfield, which bore the date August 27, 1754. He also received a Justice's commission under the crown from Governor Shirley before 1759. After his death, according to the old English custom, the homestead belonging to Ensign Abel Bliss fell to his son Oliver, and the barn built 1740 and the house built about four years afterwards were still standing in 1880. These fell to Mr. John Bliss, son of Oliver, and thence to the owner in 1880, Mrs. Speer, only child of John Bliss. The nails and glass used in the house were paid for with tar made from pink knots gathered on the farm. Abel BLISS and Jemima CHAPIN were married on 16 JAN 1736. 15. Jemima CHAPIN was born on 5 JAN 1705 in Chicopee, Hampden, Massachusetts. She died on 9 JAN 1772 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts.
