Think maybe the spelling mutated to today's "Housatonic" ? That will be on a CT map for sure. Cheers, Gay Ludington

In the History of Norfolk it refers to the early settlers referring to the Housatonic as the "Ousitonic". Cheryl, I'd be surprised if this refers to anything other than what is now called the Housatonic River. You'll find a great deal of information at: http://www.hvathewatershedgroup.org/housatonicFactSheet.htm Excerpt: The Indians named the river "usi-a-di-en-uk" which meant "beyond the mountain place". The river was sometimes known as "Potatuck", or the "Great River", until the 18th century. and: The Housatonic River flows 149 miles from its four sources in western Massachusetts. Following a south to southeasterly direction, the river passes through western portions of Massachusetts and Connecticut before reaching its destination at Long Island Sound at Milford Point. Best of luck, Brian
I am looking at some old CT documents and there is a reference to the Ousatonuck River Lottery c. 1761 in the Public Records of Connecticut, but I cannot locate where it is in CT. There was some sort of legal problem with it and by 1770, the court system was involved. There is a person of interest mentioned and I'd like to have a sense of geography. Thanks, Cheryl

JUDIE Judie, I have WELLS and possibly ROSS ancestors from Hartford County in CT that may have some link with you. I have an Orson WELLS (sometimes seen as WILLS) b. abt 1802 I believe in what is now West Hartford, CT. Orson m. 1822 in Bloomfield, CT to Melissa HUMPHREY. Orson d. 1863 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Bloomfield, CT. Melissa was d/o Lot and Chloe (MOSES) HUMPHREY. I do not know the parents of Orson WELLS. There is a Levi WELLS b. 1765 (m. Hannah WELLS) or possibly his brother Elisha WELLS b. 1758 (m. Clara DEMING) both of West Hartford, CT and sons of Elisha WELLS & Lydia DEMING that I suspect may be linked to my Orson WELLS. I do not have any proof though. Do you have anything on these WELLS families? Regarding ROSS -- there is a John ROSS b. abt 1737 who m. Patience DENSLOW b. 1740 in Windsor, CT. They had a son James ROSS b. 1767 who m. Agnes COOK daughter of Ens. Joel COOK & Sarah PINNEY. John ROSS & Patience also had a daughter Roxann ROSS b. 1764 in Windsor, CT. that I suspect may have married Joel COOK, Jr. who was b. 1763 in Bloomfield, CT (s/o Ens. Joel Cook & Sarah). I have some more information on the COOK line, but nothing more to link Roxanna ROSS & Joel COOK, Jr. This all comes together when Orson & Melissa (HUMPHREY) WELLS daughter Emma WELLS b. 1831 m. Watson COOK b. 1825 and s/o of Orrin & Wealthy (WILSON) COOK. Orrin COOK being the s/o Joel COOK, Jr & perhaps Roxanna ROSS!! Well, I hope you can follow that. I don't know if it will be of help to you, but I have more information if helpful. If you have anything on these families it would be helpful to me. Thanks Roger Roger
FYI: Godfrey Library receives important early Army Death Register The Library has acquired an original Register of Deceased Soldiers of the Army of the United States . for the period 1810-1836. This register was prepared by the Army Asylum Fund between 1851-1880. This important find is one of the earliest known registers of Army deaths and includes information on soldiers that died in the first half of the 19th Century. The register has alphabetical tabs and the names were entered in a loose alphabetical and chronological order by the first letter of the surname. The citations include the soldiers name, date of death, rank, name of commanding officer, other notes and an accounting of the soldiers receipts turned over to the Army Asylum Fund. A search of the soldiers on this list shows that they do not appear in the other usual genealogical indexes and directories. I am extracting the information and it is being serialized in the librarys Godfrey Quarterly. The current issue contains the citations for the A surnames. If you would like a copy of this issue (free) just send me your contact information and I will mail it to you.
