    1. [CRV] FIRST SIMSBURY (CT) FAMILIES: part 2 of 6 - GRISWOLD - DIBBLE - CHAPMAN - CURTISS - FORWARD - GILLETT - GRIFFIN
    2. M J Moser
    3. Transcribed From Appendix (pgs 168-175) of the Book: HISTORY OF SIMSBURY, GRANBY, AND CANTON FROM 1642 TO 1645 By: Noah A. Phelps Hartford PRESS OF CASE, TIFFINY AND BURNHAM, 1845 Pearl Street, corner of Trumbull ___________ REGISTER of Marriages, Births, and Deaths, in the families of the first settlers of Simsbury. This Register is compiled chiefly from an old manuscript book, in the possession of JAMES LOOMIS, sq. of Windsor, "made out May 18, 1674," from an older book stated to be full; to which additions were made during a few years, after 1674. These books unquestionably contain the records kept of these events, by several clergymen who officiated at Windsor, during their occurrence. The one, from which these extracts are made, is in a mutilated condition, and in many places illegible. It does not of course contain the births of children born before their parents removed to Windsor, nor generally, after they settled in Simsbury. In compiling this Register, a considerable amount of matter, in addition to the above, has been derived from the state records, and from the town records of Windsor and Simsbury. It is not claimed that this account is perfect, or that it can be made so. But the design has been to include in it all that has been discovered relating to the subject as connected with the early inhabitants of Simsbury. Where names or dates are missing, they were so in the originals from which copies were made. ________________________________________________________ PART 2 BEGINS. The book itself is not divided into parts. I'm separating the material into six parts for posting purposes. EDWARD GRISWOLD, born in 1607, -- married young. 3. The state records are closed indefinitely because they are being worked on. I'm not sure if they are being microfilmed or computerized or both. But something is being done. Right now the only place to get copies of vital records is through the individual towns. Birth records less than 100 years old have stringent restrictions. The law defines who can get copies of birth records. The list is very short and restricted to close blood relatives with allowances for exceptional circumstances which are also defined by the law. There are some records that are very hard to find because the families did not have the births recorded in the town records. Also that was the time period when many families moved north to New York and Vermont. Older children may have been born in CT and the younger children born somewhere else. The information that has gotten passed down is that the family was from Connecticut and the move to another state is forgotten or ignored. In the 1880 census records two of my greatgrandfather's sons say he was born in Ohio. Actually he was born in Pennsylvania, and only lived in Ohio for a few years before he was married and a couple years more after he was married. Anyone looking for a record of his birth in Ohio would not find it. Marilyn CT Budd Rice wrote: > > I have found it is best to contact the town clerks for birth and death > records. 3. I have found it is best to contact the town clerks for birth and death records. Birth records are very difficult to obtain and especially girls birth records. I have contacted the state for death records and received negative responses and then contacted the town clerks and received very complete death records and this is for searches in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Don't know what the problem is, lack of records at the state level or poor searches. Budd Rice. Seattle, WA. 3. Connecticut did not issue birth certificates in 1790. If you are lucky, the town in which the person was born will have a record of the birth. You might also try checking the Barbour Collection which is available on microfilm through the LDS Family History Centers. It is also available in the CT State Library and the Simsbury (CT) Genealogy Library. The Barbour Collection is also being published in book form. The towns are arranged alphabetically. Volume 33, containing Orange, Oxford, and Plainfield has just been released. Look for them in the genealogy libraries in your area. For more information on the Barbour Collection and other materials useful in researching your Connecticut ancestors go to the following site and click on the "vital record" link: < http://www.cslnet.ctstateu.edu/handg.htm > Happy Hunting, Marilyn CT Sharing creates connections. 3. Early vital records were kept in the towns. Lucius Barbour of the CT State Library asked all town clerks to send in their records and in a large numbr of cases this was done. The Library has an alphabetical list for the entire state on small file cards--called the Barbour Records. These cards have been microfilmed and can be accessed through the Family History Centers of the Mormon Church. There are also, at the Library, typescripts for many towns. Recently, vital records for some towns are being published, and some web sites for the towns are posting early records. Check out the website for the CT State Library for more information. It may be that they will do a look-up for one name. www.usgenweb.com will take you to CT and to many helpful sites there. 1. [CRV] Brick walls in VT
    2. P A R K E R
    3. While we're on the subject of brick walls in Vermont, I thought I would present mine to the list. According to THOMAS GRAVES OF HARTFORD, CT AND HATFIELD, MA, by Ken Graves, based on the work of John Card Graves, Pamelia STILES married Gamaliel GRAVES in Feb. 1820. They lived in Williamstown, Orange Co., VT, where most of their children were born. They moved to Illinois in the early 1840s. Gamaliel GRAVES' life is well documented (born 1796 in Whately, Mass and died 1854 in Waucanda, Ill, the son of Joel Graves and Lucy Martin), but I cannot place Pamelia in a STILES family. I have no birth, marriage, or death record. The Graves book says that she was "of St. Albans." She reported in the 1850 census that she was born in NY; her son reported in the 1880 census that his mother was born in Canada. She was born about 1798 and supposedly died in 1871 in Orleans, Orange Co., IN. I have traced her children (with only partial success), researched on site in Indiana and Vermont, researched at the DAR Library, and communicated with the Graves and Stiles family associations. I have even visited Leon Stiles, family historian, in Penn Yan, NY to do research. Any help from the list would be most appreciated! Kearby Parker Easton, MD

Hi - see if you can get ahold of the book "Families of Early Guilford, Connecticut" compiled by Alvin Talcott, edited by Jacquelyn Ricker and published by Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1984. Best book on Guilford famly histories. On-line genealogical booksellers can get it for you for about $65, or try interlibrary loan. Fred Murphy (frpamu@cshore.com)

    3. Phil, the intial battle took place during the F&I War and was called The Battle of Lake George, taking place on Sept. 8th, 1755. Three conflicts took place on that day. The latter is obviously a reference to the Battle of Lexington & Concord. Many companies marched from CT and Mass. after hearing of the events of that day. Time of service was usually 10 days. 3. Arlyn: I too am looking for information on a John Morrison from VT, likely the Danville, Caledonia area. He married Mary J. (surname?), and they had the following children: Harriet M. (b. 21 Jul 1833) Alonzo B. (b. 5 Jul 1835) Calvin (b. 1 Apr 1837) Angeline (b. 3 Jun 1838) Evaline (b. 18 Sep 1840) Harriet, my ancestor, married Charles Freeman Emerson on 2 Mar 1850 in Manchester (some confusion as to which one). They moved to Wisconsin sometime before 1880 as John's and Mary's names appear after those of Charles and his family in the 1% sampling of the 1880 WI census sampling found on the Internet. While you are likely looking at an earlier John Morrison, we may still have a connection somewhere here. Judy
