    1. [CRV] John Carter/Jean Chartier descendants/Deerfield Captive
    2. Robert Lurie
    3. I am descended from John Carter/Jean Chartier and his son Jean Baptiste who is the only one of his sons who remained in Canada. I have been delighted to find two third cousins on line in addition to many more distant relatives. We connected through the Chartier Families of North America Association whose US representative has much information. The Chartier's in this line are also known as Sharkey and Chortie in the US. Other captive names I have seen are Nims, Rising, Littlefield (from Maine and married into our extended Canadian family), Stevens (Permaquid, Me.),,Catlin,Corse,French, Kellogg,Hinsdale, Williams and ,as mentioned recently on this list, Stebbins. This information is from a website with notes from James Nohl Churchyard in 1995. I have misplaced the address.

    3. Marilyn, (hope Ihave the right name) Would you or someone please send out a memo to all to please use the reply all. I am duplicating efforts and am exspending a great deal of time. I just sent out a msg. re Gillett if it is not listed let me know and I'll repeat it. There are articles of info on Kelloggs, 31 in NECCC, 3 in New England Outpost, 20 in the Uredeemed Captive, 8 in true Stories. Here is an example: Subject is about redemption of some captives: 1713-- At the head of the commission, was Captain John Stoddard of Northampton, son of the minister of that place. Mr. Williams accompanied. Martin Kellogg, one of the Deerfeld captives, who had finally escaped with Baker from Montreal, went as interpreter. His son martin Jr. was an interpreter later on. This is from True Stories....... This is too much to copy, but if you send me your address I'll find the time to photocopy it for you. Also: it would be nice to know where our cousins and friends are from. Some do give a state. Richard

    1. [CRV] New England Captive-BALL
    2. Cherryl Ball
    3. On the morning of February 10th, 1500 Indians are said to have attacked the town in five different places at once. The Rowlandson garrison came under strong attack and was the only garrison overrun. Mary Rowlandson, wife of the minister, was taken prisoner and some weeks later ransomed back to her family. She wrote a fascinating account of this period in The Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson. In it she writes, "Quickly it was the dolefullest day that ever mine eyes saw." After some hours and several attempts, the garrison was finally set on fire. Forty-two people were in the building. Many were shot or tomahawked as they tried to escape the flames. Those women and children who got out alive were herded off into the woods to be later sold for ransom if they did not die from their wounds or were killed for traveling too slowly (see below). Very early in the attack a house was overrun by the Indians before the inhabitants could escape to the garrison. "There were five persons taken in one house. The father and the mother and a sucking child they knocked on the head; the other two they took and carried away alive." This was the family of a tailor named John Ball.[2/3,65] John Ball's estate was administered by his son John of Watertown 1 Feb. 1677-8.[4] The Ball homestead and the Rowlandson garrison were in the south part of Lancaster.[6/105] John's lands were never described in the town's Book of Lands although he was one of the first inhabitants. His lands were sold in 1682 to Thomas Harris.[6/288](per Michael Roman's website) Does the book contain any BALL information? Thanks, Cherryl

    3. I am descended from the Waite family who was carried off to Canada by Indians from Deerfield in 1704. The story of their daring rescue is told in Waite family histories. Two books written about the Williams family, also abducted, are THE BOY CAPTIVE OF OLD DEERFIELD (part of a series) by Mary P. Wells Smith, originally published in 1904 but still in print, and THE UNREDEEMED CAPTIVE by John Demos, 1994. Both are available in the Deerfield book/gift shop. Kearby

Joseph Gillett, 1641-1675, was killed at the Battle of Bloody Brook. The immigrant was Jonathan Gillett who immigrated on the Mary and John, and was declared freeman in May, 1635, at Dorchester. He removed to Windsor, CT, in 1636 with his wife and three oldest children. He died in Windsor, on Aug 27, 1677. Abby

    3. Richard, Are there any members of the Gillet, Gylet (or any similar spelling) family mentioned in the books. I am particularly interested in family lines not associated with Deerfield. However, I sure there are members of this family that would be interested in the Deerfield line. I've been looking for a Gillet for someone in California who was supposed to be here in the 1600's, but no one can find any mention of him any where. The only thing I know is he probably came into this country through Boston. Also are there any stories about the Kellogg family. I think I read somewhere that a Kellogg living in the general area of Deerfield, not sure of the town, was taken captive. I think the person eventually ended up living in central CT after his release. Marilyn, There are about 125 from Deerfield alone and that doesn't include, Hatfield, Hadley and other surrounding towns like Northfield etc. then there are the New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine captives plus. Many of the names were "francofied" and there is alist of those alone. There are 57 entries alone for Stebbens If Someone has a French line and the names don't seem French, there is a strong possibility the name has been changed through transliteration or who knows what. 3. Dear Geri, John Pettibone, whose family may have come from Wales to Windsor but were not founders of Windsor, married Sarah Eggleston in Windsor 16 Feb 1664, as the posting from HISTORY OF SIMSBURY,... by Phelps states. They became founders of Simsbury. GENEALOGY OF THE PETTIBONE FAMILY by I. Fayette Pettibone, published in 1885, lists 9 children for John and Sarah: John, b. 15 June 1665, m. Mary Bissell Sarah, b. 24 Sept 1667, m. John Mills and John Humphrey Stephen, b. 3 Oct. 1669, m. Deborah Bissell Samuel, b. 2 Sept. 1672, m. Judith Shepard (my ancestors - I did not xerox beyond here) Rebecca, b. 9 Mar 1675, Henry, b. 20 June 1677 Ann, b. 11 Mar 1679 Benjamin, b. 28 May 1682 Joseph, b. 11 Mar 1688 The Barbor Collection of Simsbury vital records has dates for many, including your Rebecca. The GENEALOGICAL AND FAMILY HISTORY OF THE STATE OF CONNECTICUT, edited by Cutter, et al, Vol. 1, p. 30 gives the "Pettibone Line." The "line" is John and Sarah, including their origins in Windsor, and then down through their son Samuel. A DIGEST OF THE EARLY CONNECTICUT PROBATE RECORDS by Manwaring, Vol. III, Hartford District contains the wills for Rebeckah (Pettibone) Holcomb and Capt. Thomas Holcomb on p. 64. Vibert's THREE CENTURIES OF SIMSBURY CT, 1970 mentions Capt. Thomas Holcomb serving in various capacities, including the legislature, with members of the Pettibone family. Contact me if you would like copies of any of this. I don't have any of these books - just parts I have xeroxed. Kearby

    3. I searched the referenced website: > http://genweb.net/~captivity/> and found an interesting tale. One of the stories is titled "Rogers Rangers Revenge". The American author, Kenneth Roberts, based one of his novels on this incident. His novel follows closely the story told in the website. Robert's books are to be recommended for showing the early history of the CT Valley and pre-revolutionary and revolutionary New England. Another of Roberts' books is about the invasion of Canada by Arnold shortly after the start of the Revolutionary War. Arnold was indeed an American hero in spite of his later treason at West Point. 3. Two other books (which I read as a child, living in Springfield, MA, just S. of Deerfield and descended on my mother's side from very early New England roots) are: "The Redemmed Captive (Returning to Zion)", by John Williams, Minister of the Gospel in Deerfield, and "The Boy Captive of Old Deerfield", by Mary P. W. Smith. I remember very graphically as a child visiting the old Frary House in Deerfield and seeing the hatchet in the front door. ----- Original Message ----- From: Richard Le Maire <rclwps@webtv.net> To: <CT-RIVER-VALLEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 09, 2000 7:23 PM Subject: Re: [CRV] New Eng.
