In the Ecclesiastical Affairs Series 1 of the CT Archives I find a document that is of interest to my research of Thomas Brooks in Bolton, CT. It begins: "To the Honorable the General Assembly of his Majesty Colony of Connecticut ??? May 1749. ??? inhabitants of the North ? of Bolton in Hartford County ..." Can't read all the writing but it appears to be a request for a minister. The signers of the document (17 different names) are all in different handwritings. My question is: Are there any implications of signing such a document in 1749. Does it tell us this person is a land owner, etc. etc. etc.? Ron, thank you for your input. I've marked this page for future reference. I didn't see anything like this abbr. there, however. This abbr. appears throughout the body of the deed and just prior to a proper name. Cathy, What is the date of the land record? Where is the abbreviation used in the land record? What is the exact text of the section in which the abbreviation is used? Cathy: I'm not sure but I suspect it could be someone's mark, especially the woman's as several could not write and somewhere in all my genealogy paraphernalia I have something that tells about some of the different marks known to be used. My apologies to the List!!!! I forgot to change the address on my message a little while ago!! It was my intent to reply to Brenda privately .... I'm sorry!! Sally
Hi Brenda I don't know if you remember me ... we corresponded this spring and discovered we are cousins through HICKS ..... your James, son of Oliver is brother to my Jacob, son of Oliver.... Anyway, I'm most curious about your connection to the Nims! I believe (but haven't positively proven) that I am a descendant as well. I just need proof that Maria GROUSBECK's mother was Lucy DAY. (Maria was the dau of Nicholas Grousbeck; her obit says she was born in Marlboro VT in 1829. I had planned to go to Marlboro today, but found out yesterday the Town Office is open on M W Th only ...... guess where I'll be next Thurs!!!) Maria Grousbeck was the mother of Lewis Hicks, son of Lorenzo, who was the son of Jacob. Maria's (most likely) mother was Lucy DAY whose parents were Giles DAY and Sarah DAY (They were some sort of cousins which I haven't taken the time to calculate.) Sarah DAY's mother was Sarah MUNN, whose mother was Thankful NIMS whose father was Godfrey NIMS I'm firing this off and going to visit the Nims Family Web Site. The reunion sounds like an absolutely delightful event!! I'll keep it in mind for the future if the proof I need is slow in coming!! Can anyone tell me where I might find reference to the different abbreviations used in land records? I have one abbr.. that I really have absolutely no idea what it could be. It's an 'S' slanted to the right and around the top curve of the 'S' is an apostrophe. Just below the one curving around the top of the 'S' and curving out to the right are two little apostrophe's. Does it mean 'aforesaid'? Could it have some sort of family meaning like 'son in law'? Really appreciate assistance on this. Cathy
I am and I am sorry that I did not recognize it out of context. I didn't recognize the difference. I have most of this book and love it. Sorry again. Jacqueline
Cynthia-- There is a book called, Soldiers in King Phillip's War, by George Madison Bodge, A. B. This book, written, when I don't know, but was printed for the author, 1896. This is the most comprehensive book written on this subject. It covers the years from 1620 until after 1690. It shows regiments, and the soldiers in each one, how much they were paid, gives genealogies of most of the officers, and tells the story of the Indians, etc. Anyone who wishes to know anything about this war, should read this book. Sincerely, Jacqueline rae-sack@worldnet.att.net

Cynthia: Back on July 24th you were posting parts 52.0 and 53. Following 52.0, you indicated this message: "Watch for 52.2." I decided to wait awhile to see if you would post it, but the next message was 53. I took your advice and checked the Archives for this list and lo and behold, 52.2 is not there that I can see. Did you post it after 53? Or just not send it to this list or the MA-BAY list? Would appreciate finding out whether 52.2 was every posted. Christie Trapp
