I have for several years trying to find the parents/birthplace of Mercy Wells. According to her gravestone in Spafford, Onondaga Co., NY, she died on April 29, 1861. Calculating back from her age at death, she was born July 16, 1763. She married Jeremiah Olmsted (b. Jan 6, 1762-d. Dec. 18, 1846), of West Stockbridge, MA. (Jeremiah is a descendant of Capt. Jabez Olmsted of Brookfield and Ware, MA.) I have not found a record of the marriage. They removed first, before 1790, to Hope, Hamilton Co, NY (then Town of Wells, Montgomery Co.), where they were among the first settlers. They later removed to Spafford before 1840, where they both died. I have not found a Mercy in the Wells family for whom the Town of Wells was named. They evidently came from Long Island, NY. I have found a Mercy Wells, born in Deerfield, MA, June 1, 1768, daughter of Ebenezer and Mercy Wells. She is noted in her father's will and in three or four probate records after her father's death. But there is too big a discrepancy in birthdates for this to be the same Mercy. I have not found a record of the marriage or death of this Mercy. Is the name Mercy a variation of Mary? Should I be also looking for Mary Wells? The youngest daufgter of Jeremiah and Mercy was also named Mercy. Carl Hommel hommel@sundial.net

Many thanks to Mrs. Carol Reynolds for the answer on Fustian.. I know that an original ancestor: James Pilkington came from England and worked for the Cheney Mills in Manchester, CT. Wish I could find old employment records or such for that. Thanks Marge Riley

Thankyou for all the history Vt. It`s giving me some insite of what our forefathers went through to settle this great land. Arlyn
From an article titled Cotton in the Middle Ages at http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/articles/cotton.html "So, when did cotton such as we use come in? I don't know, yet. Florence's book is laid out not as a history, but as a dictionary of early textile terms. I can, however, report that under "Fustian" she tells us that it was a cotton/linen fabric, originally a linen/wool (by the way, from here on in this letter, when I write cotton, I intend the modern meaning of the word). Fustians were made in Norwich, England as early as 1336, but these were a wool/linen mixture. In 1554, Dutch and Walloon immigrants to England brought with them the making of "fustians of Naples" which probably were cotton/linen, because a 1601 description of fustians says that they were made "of Bombast or Downe, being a fruit of the earth growing upon little shrubs or bushes...commonly called Cotton Wooll; and also of Lynnen yarn most part brought out of Scotland..." Am writing historical novel based on our Howe family diaries from 1700s MA and 1800s VT to CA goldrush but would like to incorporate other real people, not just Howe folks, from that era to round out the novel. If anybody has interesting tidbits on their relatives/ actual mini-stories / funny quirks / sayings /adventurers/horrors! etc. which they would be interested in sharing, please do to annewellman@mindspring.com. (The years they lived and their town will probably have to be tweaked to get them to fit into the plot. Will try to use as many as receive.) I have found some information that MAY assist someone searching VT military records: "The printed list of Vermonters who served in wars from the Revolution to the Korean War were published by the Vermont Adjutant General's Office and are available at most major libraries" I would suggest contacting your library.....perhaps an inter-library loan. Most original records whilch were kept in Vt before 1920 were destroyed in a fire of 1945. However, the Vt Adjutant General;s Veterans Affairs Office located at 118 State St., Monteplier, Vt 05602 will answer queries on military service records. The pension material is located at the National Archives in Washington,DC The "General Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension files" has now been published by Virgil E.White and the National Historical Publishing Co. in 3 volumes with a 4th volume as a cross index. War of 1812 pension applications have been abstracted and published. The Vermont Historical Society has a COMPLETE SET of BOTH published abstracts which can be found at large libraries. The original applications for the 1812 pensions are maintained at the National Archives. Civil War records: National Archives [ these have not been abstracted or published] You will need a form NATF80 from the Reference Services Branch of the General Service Adminstration, Washington,DC 20408 to get copies of these files. The Henry Stevens papers at the Vermont State Archives has a limited group of materials on the War of 1812 concerning military recruits. -----------------------------------below are addresses as referred above------------------------ Vermont State Archives Sec.of State's Office 109 State St Monteplier,Vt 05609-11-1 ------------------------------------- Vermont Historical Society Library 109 State St Monteplier,Vt 05609-0901 802-828-2291 -------------------------- Vermont State Archives 109 State St Mont.
