    2. NewEnglander1621
    3. 1. ___ Ball; on the list of Winthrop, supposed to be the names of those intending to come over in 1630; is the name of "Mr.Ball" If this was the John Ball of Concord, he may have arrived before Concord was granted; settled first in Watertown and moved to Concord in 1635, prior to the date of the earliest proprietor of Watertown. ---------- 2. Barron,Ellis: freeman 1641; not a grantee; bought the homestall, 10 acres of A.Kemball on the east side of the Common. adjoing on the east the lot granted to Thurston Raynor; Ellis died 1676. ------------------------------------ 3. **Barsham,William: 1630, freeman 1637; grantee of 5 lots and purchaser of 1 lot. died 1684 His homestall was west of MT Auburn between Cambridge Rd and Bank Lane. ----------------------------------- 4. Bairstow,Michael: of Charlestown 1635; probably moved to Watertown 1637/8; freeman 1636; not a grantee but a proprietor of 8 lots; died 1674. His homestall of 14 acres was on the southwest corner of Belmont and School St. ---------- 5. Bartlett, Thomas; 1630; freeman 1636; died 1654. Grantee of 7 lots. ---------- 6. Beach,Richard: of Cambridge 1635; of Watertown 1639; not a grantee. died 1674 ---------- 7. **Beeres,Richard: freeman 1637; died 1675 ; grantee of 7 lots and purchaser of 3 lots. His homestall was granted 10 acres, was bounded N.E. by Fresh Pond and west by Grove St. ----------------------- 8. Bemis, Joseph: of Watertown by 1640; died 1684; grantee of a farm and of a meadow at Nonesuch [ section of Weston]; purchased 7 other lots. His homestall was located on Warren St. ------------ 9. Benjamin,John: 1632; freeman 1632; first of Cambridge afterwards Watertown where he died 1645. Since he isnt a grantee, renders it probable that he did not move to Watertown before 1637/8; His homestall of 60 acres was situated at east of Dorchester field and bounded on the south by Charles River. --------------------------------- 10. I have ancestors that appear to have landed in MBC from a flying saucer: WHITMORE/WETMORE, DWIGHT, CROW, HALL, HICKS, FLETCHER, PARTRIDGE, Mary and the SMITH Bros., and if I thought real hard I could name more. There is not a trace of them on the other side of the pond. It's a brick wall made of salt water. Who were their parents and where did they come from? Genealogy doesn't stop at the beach, IMO. 3. I think Marilyn asked a hypothetical regarding a research method. > My question is - if you don't know that your ancestor > lived there and you only have a name and no additional > info to connect to - how can you assure that this is > your John Dwight and not another one? Marilyn and others (me too!) will no doubt be in the same fix again with another line, even if the Dwight branch is solved, asking, "Where did this ancestor come from???" In other words, How do I trace the geographical meanderings of an ancestor from point A on the map to point B, where I know point B but can't get back from there and learn wherever point A was? I am at this brick wall myself at the moment. One standard way is to read the book, "History Of Point B," which will sometimes have this information. In my case, for my Benjamin B. Powers, the relevant book does not. Another way is to check birth/marriage records, which might give a place of origin for a parent or newlywed. In my case, for my Ben, no such records exist. How 'bout a compiled genealogy? For me, nope. OK. Now what? I would like suggestions too. I have been reading through land deeds, out of desperation. That means severe eyestrain, which is why I ordinarily avoid land records. But, I have noticed, specifically in Pomfret, Vermont, about more or less 1800 up to 1820, that a deed always, inevitably, gives the residence of both buyer and seller. Thus, say at Pomfret, VT, a deed might show "I John Fratzerwattle of Pomfret do sell the farm to Timothy Nubgludgeon of East Overshoe." It would appear this way ONLY for Timothy's FIRST land purchase. After the first deed, Timothy will turn into Timothy of Pomfret. Here is a place where Nubgludgeon researchers could find Timothy's Point A, East Overshoe. And, with Point A now known, might have a chance at finding birth and/or marriage and/or other records there. Unless, of course, they have luck like mine. (According to the nonrecords, my Ben had no birth, didn't marry his wife, wasn't a head of household, but alas wasn't a criminal either, and bought no land.) Are there other ways of finding out where the heck an ancestor came from, geographically? We, the legions of the frustrated want to know! 3. To avoid doing a lot of research on those not related to you it is necessary to start with the oldest relative you are SURE of: parent, grandparent, ggrandparent - whatever. Next search until you find the parents of the known relation. You keep going back one more generation each time you verify the parents of the last one. While you do your research it is important to save the information you find on everyone with the same surname in the same area with your family. This will save lots of time later and if you run into a brick wall will give you some clues on where to search. If your research starts after 1850 you will find the federal census reports (and state census where available) a BIG help and a very good place to start. Happy Hunting. 3. Hi All, Have recently found the probate records for my 5th gr grandfather Jonathan King who died intestate in 1787 and was living in Vermont. I am trying to transcribe it. Are there any sites on the web that might help me? I especially need help with transcribing the inventory of his estate. My copy is pretty poor but have made out most of the words in the initial probate record. Thanks, Marla blarson@ubtanet.com

Why could this not be another John Dwight? > > Sorry if this sounds amateurish, but this has puzzled me and I'm still > relatively new at this researching. > > Marilyn in MI Hi, Marilyn: Put it this way -- DWIGHT is an exceedingly rare surname even today. Which is a strong indicator, though not dispositive, that the family is monoancestral -- as my WETMOREs are, and possibly my STOWs and, in a more roundabout fashion, my HAVILANDs (the Irish branch probably descends from the originals on the Island of Guernsey, FWIW). Or BIancestral, since John's bro Timothy also came to MBC and had sons. And Savage has John DWIGHT first in Watertown, I now see: vol. 2, p. 85. All of the DWIGHTs in Savage are related. My suspicion is that they came from Co. Essex, ENG, though that has never been proven. Your husband is my double cuz -- Nathaniel's bro Rev. Josiah m. Mehitable's sis Mary. Josiah and Mary were my 6th G-GPs; their dau Anna m. the Rev. James WETMORE and was a double first cousin to your husband's ancestor (I don't know which if the chn of Nathaniel and Mehitable he desc from). I know of three or four other descendants of N&M on line. N&M were G-GPs of the Rev. Dr. Timothy D, prez of Yale. Famous guy in his time, and a maternal GS of the Rev. Jonathan EDWARDS and first cuz to Aaron BURR. I'm also kin to Dr. Tim via the STOWs. Your husband also descends from Mehitable's brother Cotton PARTRIDGE, I believe. At least I have him thus in my PARTRIDGE cuz file. I have the entire PARTRIDGE line (actually WHITE-GOODWIN-CROW-PARTRIDGE) as well as the lines of Nathaniel's mother Anna FLYNT (FLYNT-HOAR-HINCKSMAN). Yrs aye, Warren Wetmore

    3. This will be several parts and I think it's worth the time to post this "residence and migrations" There will be several parts.......and will be listed as part 7.....7.2.....7.3.....etc Note: word "home stall" is used in place of homestead [by author] ------------------------------------------------ History of Watertown by Dr.Bond; N.E.H.G.S., 1860.....2d edition 1. Abbot, Daniel: admitted freeman Oct 1630; before the New Town [Cambridge] was settled. In 1631 the Court ordered a military watch of 4 to be kept every night at Dorchester and Watertown, About 5 weeks afterwards, May 18th, Daniel Abbott, was fined 5 shillings for refusing to watch, and other ill behavior towards Capt.Patrick. As Capt Patrick belonged to Watertown and no watch was ordered to be kept at New Town, there can be little doubt, but this Daniel Abbot is one of the first settlers of Watertown. He may have settled within the limits afterwards assigned to New Town. His fine was remitted Sept 8,1638; and the Colonial records, June 4,1639. say "Daniel Abbot is departed to New Providence". ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------- 2. Abbot, Robert: freeman 1634; was grantee of a homestall and meadow on the east side of Mt Auburn, and of a lot in the Great Dividends July 1636; of all which were bought by Roger Wellington. Robert went early to Connecticut. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- 3. Ambler, Richard: of Watertown,1639, not a grantee, went to Stamford,Conn. 3. As I went through the Watertown records........many of my hubby's ancestors who lived in Hampton NH also came from Watertown which we didnt know about.......even us experience researchers still learn a thing or two..[right Warren?].<<G>> It appears that the oldest towns of Watertown, Boston, Cambridge, Braintree, Malden bear checking out especially if one is missing very early ancestors.! Watch for more to come......... Cynthia ----- Original Message ----- From: "Warren Wetmore" <WebMerlin@Megsinet.net>> ----- Original Message ----- > > purchaser grantee > > 21.
