    2. 9/15/2000 Please do not "reply" to this message, instead click here > mailto:PontegwaTrail@juno.com ................................... BOOK REVIEW listed in the April 2000 edition of "Vermont Genealogy", by the Genealogical Society of VT, on the book: “Monuments and Headstones in the “New” Cemetery: East Parish, Westminster, Windham County, VT, as of November 1999”. “This compilation is carefully arranged by sections of the cemetery and burial plots within the sections, and has the useful feature of photographs of each section and maps of the sections showing the angles from which the photographs were taken. Locating any marked burial site in the cemetery with this helpful material should be quite easy. There is also information on ownership of plots...” “There is a full name Index. Grave sites date back as far as 1836, so quite a bit of Westminster history is here. As it is often the case with such publication as this, the compiler has ties to many of the people memorialized. So will many of the researchers.” For more information on this book, please contact PontegwaTrail@juno.com privately and not the list. Charles B. 1. [CRV] Re: Browns of Paxton MA and Eliza Chittenden
    2. Anne E. Wellman
    3. "Paxton MA Births, Marriages and Deaths 1748-1850" book from Heritage Books, Inc. gives Samuel Brown of Sudbury as parent for Abel Brown. At the first town meeting Mar 11 1765 Capt. Samuel Brown was chosen moderator, selectman, Sealer of Weights. He also subscribed to the covenant to organize a congregational Church 1767. He was listed as one of the heaviest tax payers and helped make the choice of church pews which cost from 14 to 22 dollars. Members of this committee were given deeds to the pews. I haven't found anymore on Samuel. If you locate some I'd be interested. His son Abel mar. Amelia Howe sister of John Howe. Abel was in the committee to report on the state of public affairs 1774 in which they voted to purchase a barrel of powder in addition to the stock (some 2 barrels) they had on hand. They set up the Minute Company of all able-bodied men. Abel was chosen as ensign of the Standing Company. Abel lived in the Middle School Plot No.5. He also wrote a long list of how much various goods and a man's labor was worth per type job in 1777 eg horse hire 2 pence/mile. Quoting from the book: "On the Rutland road just above where Simon G. Harrington now lives, settled one Samuel Brown who came from Sudbury. He had a son Abel Brown, who for many years was the Town Clerk, who held that office longer than has any person before or since. Of course the personal history of this town officer is obscure at this late day, but we have the right to assume that he must have been a man of superior fitness for the important post which he held so many years. He had children- Samuel 2nd, Augustus and Paul. The second so removed to NH while the third went to Cincinnnati where, it is supposed, he perished during the yellow fever scourge which soon after prevailed. Samuel 2nd remainedd in town and mar. Lucretia Earle, dgt of Marmaduke Earle and had children: John Barnes, Sally, Betsey, Patty, Aurelia, and Matilda. " Abel Brown was listed as holding the office of Deacon in the Church. who mar. Aunfortunately. He is part of our tree and I'd dearly love more. Here are some tidbits: John Barnes B. mar. Elisa J. Chittendon in Paxton MA on 11 Apr 1838. It was noted that they passed the golden wedding mark "but did not celebrate". Others in town were listed as having celebrated the event. J.B. Brown was listed again "Another institution of our town flourished about 1840, it was the Paxton Brass Band with Thomas Ward as Leader. The other members: J. Buckley Grosvenor, Oliver Goodnow, Buckley Abbott, George W. Dodd, Horace Peirce, Edward Peirce, Daniel Peirce, Nelson Wood, Samuel Grosvenor Joseph Allen, Willard Abbott, D. Estabrook, __Spaulding, __ Phillips, J. B. Brown. This band continued for 10 yers or more and became well known throughout the county. It played in Worcester on invitation of the autnorities one Fourth of July and was highly spo9ken of by all. Again at Fitchburg during the great muster there, they won golden opinions and took the palm over all the other bands in conpetition and there were quite a number from other placed in the county." No other Chittenden's mentioned unfortunately. ----- Original Message ----- From: Arthur Chittenden <chitto@one.net.au> To: <annewellman@mindspring.com> Sent: Wednesday, September 13, 2000 4:45 AM Subject: Looking for Chittendens' > Hi Anne > > Many thanks for your email re; Eliza Chittenden > and John Barnes Brown.
