    1. [CRV] Barn Raising Menu
    2. Hi Group! Since many of our ancestors were farmers, I thought you might enjoy this tidbit found in the Mennonite Community Cookbook by Mary Emma Showalter published in 1950. Food for a Barn Raising This bit of information was found in a quaint, old handwritten recipe book from Great-grandmother's day. It is included here mainly for the purpose of giving us a peep into the past. As many of us know, a "barn raising" was quite an event during those early years. When a new barn was built, all the friends and neighbors came on the specified day to help put up the framework of the barn. This policy is still carried out in some communities where neighbors are neighborly. Homemakers of our day will no doubt be astounded at all the food consumed in one day. What is more difficult to believe is that it was all made in Great-grandmother's kitchen. Here is the list as I found it: 115 lemon pies 500 fat cakes (doughnuts) 15 large cakes 3 gallons applesauce 3 gallons rice pudding 3 gallons cornstarch pudding 16 chickens 3 hams 50 pounds roast beef 300 light rolls 16 loaves bread Red beet pickle and pickled eggs Cucumber pickles 6 pounds dried prunes 1 large crock stewed raisins 5 gallon stone jar white potatoes and the same amount of sweet potatoes Enough food for 175 men. This book also had recipes for making laundry soap and homemade handlotion. It is one of the many cookbooks I have collected over the years. Hope you enjoyed "peeking" in to the past. 3. That is what I have... if your talking about Samuel born 1680 married 6 Mar 1700/01 Abigail COLLIER b 1682 the d/o Joseph [COLLYER] COLLIER and Elizabeth SANFORD. I don't have a death date for either Samuel or Abigail, well I do have that she died after 1691. 3. > Jane Quirk >> hi Jane , I hate to say this , But , Mary did not > marry a Daniel Andrews !!! , try John ..... Phil ~~~~~~~~~ Good morning everyone... This is what I have re Mary PECK and her husband Daniel 2) ANDREWS.... According to what I have Mary married Daniel ANDREWS.. Torrey on pg 16 says this: ANDREWS, Daniel (1649-1731) & Mary PECK [ca 1652-) ; ca 1671-2 Farmington, CT. There was a John whom married a Mary ( I have found her name to be BARNS... he is on pg 17 ANDREWS, John (?1616-1681/2) & Mary .........( -1694) b 1643 Farmington, CT. I have that John ANDREWS was born 31 Oct 1620 in County Essex, England, he died 1681 at Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut he md abt 1642 in Farmington, TO Mary [BARNS] b 1622 county Essex, England, she died May 1694.. they were parents of 9 ch. Daniel being one of them... Now in Ernest FLAGG'S "Genealogical Notes of the Founding of New England" pg 361 under "ANDREWS-PECK" he says this: "There are good reasons for believing that Daniel 2) ANDREWS married Mary 2) PECK. the only reason for thinking otherwise is the fact that Savage says she married John ANDREWS of Hartford. The PECK Genealogy make the same statement, but in doing so, simply copies Savage without quetion, as so many others have done. It can be shown that Savis is "elaborately wrong" to use one of his own expressions, as regards the family of Deacon Paul PECK." Ernest FLAGG goes on to point out some of the errors in Savage and then showing what we now know..he takes up 3 pages on the subject and pointing out that Mary did marry Daniel ANDREWS the s/o John 1) ANDREWS and Mary [BARNS]. If I am in error, I sure want to correct it... but that is what Ernest FLAGG points out.. Wilma Fleming Haynes gencon@harborside.com

    3. Frank, Where, specifically, did you find this information on Rootsweb? What are the names and URL's of the website(s) where you found the information? Did the people who posted the information give any sources from which they obtained the information? Knowing where and how you found the information will help others go back to that place. Once there, they may find information that will lead them in the direction to verification. The process of verifying and resolving conflicting information can lead to new discoveries. And there are bound to be conflicts in every family. As more and more researchers are able to compare notes over the internet, mistakes in the assumptions of earlier researchers are going to surface. In my posting last night on the family of Deacon Paul Peck, I mentioned the Genealogy Dictionary by James Savage. Some of the names and dates you mention below, were also given by Savage along with many other names that were not mentioned in the Barbour book. The focus of the Barbour book is families who lived in Hartford. Savage's work covers a much wider geographic area. The library was closing, and I had only a few minutes to look at the Savage material and make a few notes on the differences I saw. Someone may also want to check the following book: "Hale, House, and related families : mainly of the Connecticut River Valley" by Donald Lines Jacobus, originally published in 1952. Jacobus is the person who started the genealogy journal, "The American Genealogist", and one of the original members of the Connecticut Society of Genealogists, Inc. I haven't looked, but it is very possible you may find some information on Martha Hale in that book. When reading about the early families, it is not unusual to find the wife of one early settler is also the sister of another early settler. The relationship just is not obvious because they are adults who married in England and have families of their own. 1. [CRV] Website of historical homes Franklin county MA (Sunderland)
    2. Hi All, A few months ago I found a terrific website that had photos and "histories" of several old homes in/around the Sunderland area. I was very impressed with the entire site, and had bookmarked it. Having lost "recent" favorites when AOL messed us up while (cough).....upgrading us. I find now, that this site must have been one that didn't "make it" soon enough to be on our "back-up" file....... I am in the process of preparing a "speech" and some noteworthy "things of interest" for and upcoming (Comins/Kimball) family reunion in North Hadley, MA in a few weeks, and I thought some of the info from this site would be enjoyed by many in attendance. One of the homes mentioned in this site was one previously owned by Benjamin Graves, that my Hubbard/Comins folks bought and restored....and sold antiques there....the oldest living ancestor (my aunt Olive Comins Hubbard b. 1899) will be there at the reunion, as well as her sons-grandchildren-etc, and I had SO wanted to focus on her and these homes she remembers as her neighbors......Aunt Olive is the sister of my Grandmother Grace, who died in her 107th year........ I have looked, searched, hunted, lost sleep, and practically obsessed over finding this website again.....and cannot seem to come up with a clue as to WHERE I found it in the first place :( Does anyone remember this, or know the URL to find it? It is SO important to me right now. I would appreciate any suggestions on how to find this again....I've exhausted my brain cells and I'm sending a giant SOS out for help !!!! My Uncle's name was Clifton F. Hubbard, if that helps any.... Annie Gardner
