    3. Hi Tamara, My cousin's line (that I have been working on) includes several generations of Barbers in Heath. Most of the info I have comes from "The Barber Genealogy" by Ed. Barbour. Some of the names are Sarah Emeline Barber b. 1827 Heath who married George Stetson. Her parents were John (b. 1799 Heath) and Anna (Fairbanks) Barber. John was the son of John b. 1771 Heath, who was the son of John b. 1742 Worcester, the son of John b. 1714 Boston, the son of Thomas b. abt 1688 Boston. I think we have chatted before. Was it about the Hager family? Barbara

    1. [CRV] Bros: Titus and Graves HOSMER - 1700s
    2. Hello everyone, Just posted the following on GenForum - and thought I'd give it a try on both the CT and CT River Valley ists. (sorry if you get both). CT counties covered: New London Co and Middlesex Co. I've learned that Titus HOSMER (who resided in Middletown, CT) had guardianship granted for his younger brother, Graves HOSMER (my direct ancester). My research for marriage and children's births for Graves Hosmer have thus far been in New London Co without success thus far. Now wondering, given the above, if there is any primary data in Middlesex County. Things to consider: 1) Mother of Titus and Graves (Deliverance GRAVES Hosmer) died in 1758. 2) Father of Titus and Graves (Stephen HOSMER) died in 1761. 3) Titus born in 1736. (Adult when parents died). (He was m to Lydia LORD in 1761) 4) Graves born in 1756. (Only 6 yrs old when father died) 5) Guardianship granted (Titus for Graves) in 1769. 6) Graves served in Rev. War (first in navy on Frigate Trumball as well as reinlistment in infantry). 7) Graves m Amy CONGDON (when?/where?) 8) Secondary sources say first children born to Graves and Amy "in New London", CT from 1790 to 1798. Children: Prentice, Sylvester, Titus W and Clarissa). My questions: 1) Where did Graves physically reside from 1761 when his father died until his brother Titus took legal guardianship for him in 1769? (We might entertain the idea that he went directly from Hartford to Middletown where Titus resided.. and the formalities followed in 1769?) 2) When/where did Graves HOSMER and Amy CONGDON marry? Would this likely have been before or after Graves served in the Rev War? My guess is that he served "first", then married after his service in the War. 3) Were their CT born children (1790--1798) really born in New London, CT as the sec. sources say? Was it perhaps "New London County", not New London, the town? Or, was it even in that county after all? Later, Graves HOSMER and family migrated to NY as did his brother Timothy and his uncle Timothy. Titus HOSMER remained in Middletown, CT and died there. Hoping for some additional clues or insights! (or, just check my thinking process to see if I'm on a reasonable path) debbie CAhobbies@aol.com

    1. [CRV] Hampden County site update
    2. Laurel O'Donnell
    3. Hi Everyone, I just uploaded to the Hampden County site the following resource: "History of the "Old High School" on School Street From 1828 to 1840 & History of the Seminary, On Maple Street, Established in 1832." by Charles Wells Chapin, 1890. I have transcribed the entire book (129 pages) and it is now available online. Very interesting discussion of old school days -- I thought my former students were prone to pranks, but at least they never dug a pit for me! There are biographical sketches for some 400 students (and teachers) from both schools. While some of the biographical data is minimal, this still provides some clues on earlier Springfield scholars, including the spouses for many of the female seminary students and informative notes on where many people relocated. Time span for this resource focuses on high school aged students from 1832-1843, dates of birth likely spanning the years 1815-26. There are also about forty portrait images of men only. As always you can access this page from the Hampden County site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~mahampde/index.htm Happy autumn, Laurel

Thanks! http://www.alladvantage.com/go.asp?refid=LAH471 krys that puts you in the same situation I am in we both need to find the correct parentage for Hannah GILBERT several people state that her father is John GILBERT and she was born 21 Jan 1664 in Stratford, but I believe this is the Hannah who married Joseph PARKER in Connecticut I think our Hannah would have been from Eastern Massachusetts not Connecticut. The E-Mail I have been getting on this query has produced several more possibilities. You may also want to follow up on the answers to my query and check out sources not avaliable to me. Pope may be correct and the about 1644 may be way off but Humphrey did die in 1658 so she would have to have been born before 1659 if Elizabeth was pregnet with Hannah when he died. Savage states that they had several minor children and if she was born about 1657 or so she would have been about 25 and Joseph 17 at their marriage not impossible. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Krys Douglas" <krys@twrol.com> To: <CT-RIVER-VALLEY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 08, 2000 8:31 PM Subject: Re: [CRV] Hannah GILBERT md Joseph CHAMBERLAIN > Robin, > > So much for assumptions. 3. Hello! I am new to the list, so I thought I would jump in and see if I have any research in common with anyone. My main line of study right now is my Stanton line, which was in Franklin County, MA (mostly Leyden, also Colerain) and originally came from Vermont. Don't know where in Vermont, but I am currently looking at Pownal, Bennington County. I have found a John Stanton, living in Pownal who had a daughter the right age to be my Esther in 1790 and 1800 US Censuses. Anyone have any VR info for an Esther Stanton, born about 1786 in VT? <grin> Unfortunately, that is all I know about her--that and she gave birth illegitimately to a son, George W. Stanton, in 1803 in Leyden, MA. I find her in Leyden as head of household in the 1830 Census, possibly living with her son George in the 1840 Census (he is listed as head of household and has a woman living with him that is Esther's age) and 1850 Census as head of household with Benjamin Stanton, Sarah Stanton (pauper), and Lucy Green (pauper). I am hoping there are some sibling clues there. Other lines in Franklin Co., MA are Coates and Barber, with associated names. I am also following a Carr/Goodale line in Hillsboro, NH, if this list covers that area. If anything rings a bell, please let me know! -Tamara

    2. M J Moser
    3. Source: The Gilbert Family: Descendants of Thomas Gilbert, 1582(?)-1659 of Mt. Wollaston (Braintree). Windsor, and Wethersfield By: H. W. Brainard, H.S. Gilbert, and C. A. Torrey Published: 1953 New Haven, CT The writers of the book have identified several early Gilbert settlers in New England: THOMAS GILBERT, of Braintree, MA, and later Windsor, CT, and after the death of his wife in 1654, of Wethersfield, CT in the section that is now Glastonbury. He is the ancestor of the largest family of Gilberts, THE FAMILY WHOSE GENEALOGY IS PRESENTED IN THIS BOOK. JOHN GILBERT came from Bridgewater, co. Somerset, and settled early of Dorchester, MA. In 1637, he moved to Taunton. where he died in 1657. HUMPHREY GILBERT, born about 1616, came to Ipswich, MA, where he was a planter or commoner in 1648, and died in 1658, leaving a wife Elizabeth. His daughters were the children of a previous wife. WILLIAM GILBERT, probably from some part of Dorsetshire, came to Boston, MA, about 1669, or perhaps earlier. He was a cordswainer and merchant. MATTHEW GILBERT in 1638 was one of the early settlers of New Haven where he died in 1680. He arrived in Boston in 1637 on the ship Hector. He served as Assistant and Deputy Governor of New Haven Colony. ROGER GILBERT and his wife Sarah were in Boston in 1682. They had at least 2 children. Their descendants, if any, have not been traced. REV. THOMAS GILBERT and his wife Sarah arrived in Boston in 1663 on the ship Prudent Mary. He served as the first minister in Topfield, MA. Died in Cambridge in 1673. The couple had no children. Hope this helps. Marilyn CT

    3. Robin, Use the IGI and Ancestral files to look at Joseph Chamberlain and Hannah Gilbert up in Sudbury, MA area. The names fit together when you go from generation to generation in the ancestral files. Hannah was probably a member of one of the Gilbert families that lived in Eastern Massachusetts. See my message "from the Gilbert Family Book", that I will send after this message. 3. Krys I just checked out Humphrey GILBERT he died in 1658 and had a Hannah in 1644 hardly the Hannah who married Joseph CHAMBERLAIN when she would have been 38 at her marriage and having children past 1700 when she would have been in her late 50's or early 60's when their last child was born. This cannot be the correct Hannah GILBERT. Even if she had been born in 1658 it would be 52 when as I have it Simon CHAMBERLAIN was born in 1710 so when was she born certinly not in 1744 which is unlikely also it is not likely but not imposible for a 17 year old boy to mary a girl of 24 + years old. 3. Thanks Krys That would make sence to me I got the other information mainly from the Ancestrial File and we know that it has lots of errors but it is a very good starting point as we all should know that we need to verify every thing and I am now updating that portion of my genealogy and adding it to my web site. Do you have any idea the ancestry of Nathaniel CHAMBERLAIN's wife Elizabeth HUNKINS. I have some prospects for her parentage but cannot prove anything concrete on that line as I descend from this son of Joseph and Hannah GILBERT FYI it goes Joseph and Hannah GILBERT CHAMBERLAIN Nathaniel and Elizabeth HUNKINS CHAMBERLAIN Richard and Abigail WRIGHT CHAMBERLAIN Er and miss FOWLER CHAMBERLAIN Nicholas and Sarah JOHNSON CHAMBERLAIN George and Polly CHAMBERLAIN SHEFFER Gorg SCHAEFFER / SHEFFER is my 3 g grandfather. 1. Re: [CRV] REV WETMORE
    2. Harriet Chase
    3. Per: "Life of Philander Chase" by Laura Chase Smith, 1903 copied as written, ..... indicating parts which don't appear to pertain to Rev Wetmore: ( ) my note to clarify It can be "assumed" that Laura Chase Smith retrieved this information from her grandfather, Philander's autobiography: "Reminiscences" "The couple (Philander & his wife) remained about a year after their marriage in the old Dutch house in Albany (NY). .... In the year of 1798, he was ordained to the diaconate in St. George's Church , New York, by the Rt. Rev. Samuel Provost, Bishop of New York, in company with the Rev. Robert E.Wetmore, who was ordained to the priesthood. ....... The Rev. Mr. Wetmore had, before his ordination, been employed by the Missionary Society in the Diocese of New York, which was the first organization of the kind in the Episcopal Church of America. With great fidelity had he worked on the head-waters of Delaware and Unadilla rivers in Paris and Duanesburg. ......... His health had failed and he was now a resident of Schenectady. The young deacon, Rev. Philander Chase was named in his place as an itinerant missionary. ......... The small missionary fund had been exhausted, even by the moderate stipend afforded him and the Rev. Mr. Wetmore, his predecessor. ....... .......Returning to Albany and taking sweet counsel with good Mr. Wetmore at Schenectady, he went to Utica. ........ Mr. Chase went on to Paris (NY) Here he found the families of the Blakesleys, the Seymours, and the Doolittles, all of whom were already interested in the growth and progress of the Church, through the efforts of a Mr. Aiken, a layman; and so earnest had he been, that a parish had been formed and the Rev. Mr. Wetmore had officiated there for some time in the same country. ......... A canon was passed by the convention of 1796, that the ministers of churches should preach sermons and make collections for the above purpose throughout the diocese, some time during the months of September each year. With the fruits of the collections he Rev. Robert G. Wetmore traveled in one year 2386 miles, held divine service and preached 107 times, baptized 47 adults and 365 infants, and distributed among the poor and deserving the Book of Common Prayer. ....... Hope this brings you a bit "closer" to one of your Reverends, Warren. +Harriet Chase

    3. Robin, So much for assumptions. Since I didn't have a birthdate for Hannah, it seemed logical to assume Gilbert's Hannah was the same one. Obviously not since the ages are all wrong. 3. CRV members. I have just gotten around to varifying this line. and I have found problems with Hannah GILBERT's information. I have she married Joseph CHAMBERLAIN 28 August 1682 which I have been able to verify but who is she some records say she is the daughter of John GILBERT and Hannah BLACKMAN but since this couple married in 1684 it would appear that they are in the same generation. some say she is the Hannah born and christened in 1677 but this would make her age 7 at her marriage other records put her born 21 Jan 1664 in Stratford, Fairfield, Connecticut but I cannot find this birth in the records. I believe there are those on this list that may have this couple in their ancestry. So do any of you know Hannah's ancestry.
