Temple and George Sheldon, published by Joel Munsell, 82 State St., Albany, N.Y., 1875. p. 496 In an attack made upon Charlestown, August 27, 1757, Asahel Stebbins was killed, and his wife taken prisoner, by the Indians, leaving four children, the oldest but 7 years of age. While on the march to Canada, Mrs. Stebbins became worn out by the hardships of the journey, and was unable to travel. As she had thus become an incumbrance to them, the savages determined to burn her. She was fastened to the stake, and witnessed the preparations for the horried ceremony. Heart broken by her sorrows, exhausted by her sufferings, the captive had found her trials almost too great for endurance. She had no hope of ultimate release. In full faith that the portals of eternal rest were about to open for her, she smiled upon her tormentors. The Indians, considering this but an act of bravery, and defiance, were filled with admiration that knew no bounds. She was at once released from her bonds, and assisted and tenderly cared for the remainder of the journey. She was redeemed between September and December, 1758, and lived to good old age, dying Feb 2, 1808, age 76. 3. Source: The Winthrop Fleet of 1630 by Charles E.Banks, 1930 ------- page 63: * Borroughs,Robert: came on Arabella 1630 [Stiles His of Wethersfield,168] Supposedly, Robert married Mrs. Mary Ireland. 1: Was she the mother of John Burrows that was born in 1642? 2. Has anyone found her maiden name - Mary ?? who married Samuel Ireland in England? John married Hannah Culver in New London, CT on Dec 14, 1670. They had a daughter Mary Burrows on Nov 14, 1672 in New London Co., Groton, CT (Robert Burrows and Descendants - R. Earl Burrows) Now this is where I need help. Supposedly she married John Ashcraft III on Sept 12, 1690 in Groton, CT. This is from Martha Ashcraft Neal's book "The Ashcraft Family". 3. Has anyone found a marriage record for John Ashcraft to Mary Burrows on this date? 4.-6. John Burrows died intestate in Groton, CT on Feb 12, 1716 - Does anyone know if a Mary Ashcraft is listed in this estate record or inventory??? When Hannah Culver Burrows dies in 1734 a daughter Mary Tuttle is listed in the will. Now John Ashcraft supposedly died in Groton, CT on 5 Jun 1732. So did a Mary Burrows Ashcraft marry a Mr. Tuttle between 1732-1734?? Is there a death record of John Ashcraft for 1732???

    3. Ginny As you get off Rte 91, travel West on Route 2 about 5 or 6 miles to the turn off for Hill Cemetery. After a few miles from Rte 91, there will be a few landmarks along the way: "The Outpost" (gift shop) will be on your left; "Shelburne Falls Coffee Roasters" also on your left ( a golf course behind it); soon after that Rte 2 takes a sharp corner to the right, then a straight piece followed by a slight down slope. The Anchorage Nursing Home will be on a hillside to your right, followed by The Trading Post (another gift shop featuring Native American goods). "Little Mohawk Road" will be on your right, in view of the white Congregational Church also on your right. Turn onto Little Mohawk Rd. After less than a mile, there will be a road to your right "Village Road". It is narrow and steep. Hill Cemetery is up there on your left, maybe 1/4 mile. Enjoy!! Temple and George Sheldon, published by Joel Munsell, 82 State St., Albany, N.Y., 1875. p. 496 of No. 4, now Charlestown, N.H. In an attack made upon Charlestown, August 27, 1757, Asahel Stebbins was killed, and his wife taken prisoner, by the Indians, leaving four children, the oldest but 7 years of age. A monument to her memory has recently been erected in the cemetery by some of her great grand children. 2 ii. Thomas STEBBINS. 6.
