    2. FIRST GENERATION 1. Col. Samuel COIT was born in 1708 in Plainfield, , Connecticut. He died on 4 Oct 1792 in Griswold, , Connecticut. The Coit Family; or the Descendants of John Coit, by Rev. F.W. Chapman, A.M., Press of the Case, Lockwood & Brainard Co., Hartford, Conn., 1874. p. 118 He settled in the North Society of Preston (now the town of Griswold), and there spent a long and honored life, dying Oct. 4, 1792, aged 84. In military life he rose to the rank of Colonel, and, in 1758, had command of a regiment raised in the neighborhood of Norwich, which wintered at Fort Edward. He was also much employed in civil matters, representing Preston in the General Assembly in 1761, 1765, 1769, 1771, 1772, and 1773, and sitting as judge on the bench of the county court and of a mari-time court, in the time of the Revolution. In 1761 he was one of a committee appointed by the proprietors of Amherst Township, in Nova Scotia, and in 1774 was moderator of the town meeting of the Boston Port Bill, and one of the Preston "Committee of Correspondence," He was received into the church in Preston in 1742, and his wife Sarah in 1733. The posterity of Col. Coit have been quite numerous, and, as they filled a large place in the town for one or two generations they have been distinguished from their New London cousins as "the Preston Coits." They have now entirely withdrawn from Preston and Griswold, but the graves of the past generations are numerous in the cemetery east of Griswold church. He was married to Sarah SPALDING on 30 Mar 1730. Sarah SPALDING was born in 1711. She died on 11 Jul 1776 in Griswold, , Connecticut. Col. Samuel COIT and Sarah SPALDING had the following children: +2 i. Benjamin COIT (born on 28 Mar 1731). +3 ii. John COIT (born on 4 Jun 1741). He was married to Jemina on 22 Mar 1779. SECOND GENERATION 2. Benjamin COIT (Samuel-1) was born on 28 Mar 1731 in Preston, New London, Connecticut. He died on 21 Apr 1812 in North Stonington, New London, Connecticut. He was also a sincere and consisten Christian, owned the covenant in the 2d church of Preston, now Griswold, Oct. 20, 1754, and was received to communion July 6, 1806. He was taken suddenly ill, while on a visit in North Stonington, died there, April 21, 1812, aged 81, and was buried in the Oit Tomb in Griswold cemetery. Vernon is no Gretna Green in that sense.....Vernon is located on the border of Vermont and Mass.on route 142.....SOUTH Vernon was part of Northfield,Mass until around 1749. As far as why so many from Mass married in Vernon.......could be number of reasons..... 1. Vermont marriage laws were not as strict as the old Bay State 2. settlers migrating..... 3. elopements....some probably did -- 1806.... you'd write to the Vernon town clerk......for marriage record...
