    1. [CRV] New Addition to Vermont-L Web Site - "Regimental History - Vermont Seventeenth Regiment," 1863-1865
    2. Karima
    3. Happy Memorial Day Weekend, In tribute to those who served in the Civil War, or the Great Rebellion, (depending upon from which side one views this momentous period in our history - and most of us have ancestors who fought on both sides), I have just uploaded to the Vermont-L Web Site, the "Regimental History - Vermont Seventeenth Regiment," by Lt. Joel H. Lucia . This history describes the regiment's exploits from its conception in 1863 throughout the battles fought in Virginia during the last three years of the Civil War. It was transcribed and submitted to the Vermont-L Web Site by Al Rose. William H. H. CHAPMAN, who served in G Company, (12 April 1864 -- 14 July 1865) and was later promoted to full Corporal on 21 February 1865, is an ancestor of Al's daughter-in-law's Vermont family. Thank you Al, for this most interesting account. Because of it's length, this historical account has been divided into 3 parts. You can access this new addition from the main gateway page, by clicking on the "Latest Additions" button (located in the middle of the page). http://www.rootsweb.com/~vermont/VERMONTGATEWAY.html If you have photos, articles, etc. [pertaining to the history and/or genealogy of Vermont], and you would like to share this information with the list, I would be delighted to include them on the Web Site. Please contact me to let me know if you want to participate. Also, if you have personal web sites which relate to your research in Vermont, please let me know and we can add links to them from the Vermont Web Site. Clesson Merriam and Ella Merriman Barber A.D. 1874 History of the Town of Northfield, Massachusetts, by J. H. Temple and George Sheldon, published by Joel Munsell, 82 State St., Albany, N.Y., 1875. p. 496 In an attack made upon Charlestown, August 27, 1757, Asahel Stebbins was killed, and his wife taken prisoner, by the Indians, leaving four children, the oldest but 7 years of age. While on the march to Canada, Mrs. Stebbins became worn out by the hardships of the journey, and was unable to travel. As she had thus become an incumbrance to them, the savages determined to burn her. She was fastened to the stake, and witnessed the preparations for the horried ceremony. Heart broken by her sorrows, exhausted by her sufferings, the captive had found her trials almost too great for endurance. She had no hope of ultimate release. In full faith that the portals of eternal rest were about to open for her, she smiled upon her tormentors. The Indians, considering this but an act of bravery, and defiance, were filled with admiration that knew no bounds. She was at once released from her bonds, and assisted and tenderly cared for the remainder of the journey. She was redeemed between September and December, 1758, and lived to good old age, dying Feb 2, 1808, age 76. A monument to her memory has recently been erected in the cemetery by some of her great grand children. History of the Town of Northfield, Massachusetts, by J. H. 1. [CRV] New Addition to the VT Web Site "The Vicissitudes of Mr. Seth Hubbell and His Family 1789"
    2. Karima
    3. The first settlement in the town of Wolcott, Lamoille Co., VT was made in 1789, by Thomas TAYLOR and Seth HUBBELL. Both families were subjected to great hardships, but Mr. Taylor having more means escaped many of the privations that fell to the lot of Mr. Hubbell and his family. Mr. Hubbell set out from the town of Norwalk, in Connecticut, on his journey to his new home in Vermont. I have just uploaded to the Vermont-L Web Site, a fascinating narrative written by Mr. Hubbell relating his trials and triumphs in those early days. The narrative was originally published in 1829. Mr. Hubbell begins his story with the following: "This narrative was written for the private use and gratification of the sufferer, with no intention of its ever appearing before the public but certain reasons connected with his present circumstances have induced him (by the advice of his friends) to commit it to the press. It is a simple narration of real facts, the most of which many, living witnesses can now attest to. The learned reader will excuse the many imperfections in this little work: the writer not being bred to literary knowledge, is sensible of his inability to entertain the curious; but if his plain and simple dress can reach the sympathy of the feeling heart, it may be gratifying to some. It may also serve to still the murmurings of those who are commencing settlements in the neighborhood of plenty, and teach them to be reconciled to their better fate, and duly appreciate the privileges they enjoy, resulting from the toils of the suffering few who broke the way into the wilderness.” We are indebted to Tom Dunn for providing us with this glimpse into what our forefathers had to endure in those early days of settlement in the wilds of Vermont. Thank you Tom! I am sorry it took me so long to get it on line. :-) Because of its length, this narrative has been broken up into two sections. The first section can be accessed from the main gateway page, by clicking on the "Latest Additions" button (located in the middle of the page).
