John Webster Family of Connecticut. By William Holcomb Webster & Rev. Melville Reuben Webster, D.D. 1st Edition, Published by Endless Genealogies, St. Paul, printed by: E. R. Andrews Printing Co., Rochester, N. Y. 1915. p. 90 Capt. Ezekiel Webster was killed by an Indian. Tradition in various branches of the family says in the French and Indian War. Capt. Ezekiel Webster was an officer in the Revolutionary war; that he was killed by an Indian who removed his heart before life was extenct, and ate it. The date of his death fixes the war in which he fell; it was too early for the Revolution. Scribner's History of the United States, Vol. III, p. 290, recites: "On the 3d of July, when Col. Bradstreet, who had been charged with the conduct of a convoy of provisions and stores down the Onondaga to Oswego, was returning to Schenectady, he was suddenly attacked about ten miles from Oswego, and had a sharp skirmish with a body of Canadians and Indians," etc. On the 8th of the previous September the battle of Lake George had been fought, war had been declared by the English, May 17, 1756, and by the French, June 9, following. The coincidence of the time and circumstance gives confirmation of the family tradition relating to the death of Capt. Ezekiel Webster. History & Genealogy of the Gov. John Webster Family of Connecticut. By William Holcomb Webster & Rev. Melville Reuben Webster, D.D. 1st Edition, Published by Endless Genealogies, St. Paul, printed by: E. R. Andrews Printing Co., Rochester, N. Y. 1915. p. 90 - 91. Ezekiel was Collector in that part of the town of Eat Hartford which is now the town of Manchester, in 1746. One of the schools establish in 1751 in what is now Manchester, was located near Ezekiel Webster's in the Five Miles, then a part of Hartford. Stephen Webster, a young brother, sixteen years the junior of Ezekiel, named on of his sons in honor of Capt. Ezekiel, his brother, and in his later life told of this older brother "of light hair and immense build and strength." Sep 7, 1756, administration was granted on the estate of Cap. Ezekiel Webster, late of Hartford, deceased, to Honah Olcott and Joseph Cowles. The inventory showed about 14 acrex near Samuel Price, Appriasers. In his Will of Sep. 14, 1758, Jonathan Webster of Glastonbury makes a bequest to "the heirs of my son Ezekiel." Nov. 5, 1761, the estate of Ezekel Webster was declared insolvent. Samuel Weed, David Webster and Jonathan Webster being creditors, and 14 acres near Webster's grist mill were set out to said creditors. Dec. 30, 1771, Rebecca Webster of Hartford sold to Samuel and Timothy Briant of Hartford, land in Orford Parish, Elijah Webster a witness. For many years search was made in vain among all descendants for a birth list of the children of Cap. Ezekiel Webster. At last Mrs. C. A. Stevens of 53 Pine Street, Watherbury, Conn., found one, and in a letter dated Sep. 18, 1904, she says: "The enclosed is a copy of an old paper I found not long since among old deeds, & c., taken from the garret of the "mansion House" built by Ephriam Webster, on the banks of the Farmington River." v. 1. [CRV] George Clinton GRANT
    2. Bill Grant
    3. Does anyone on this list have GRANT forebears? We are looking for George Clinton GRANT born 1812 CT. George married Eliza Haddon and they lived in NYC from about 1840 to 1850, then purchased land in Monmouth Co, NJ. Family says he was a potato farmer. Family also says they relate to Ulysses S. GRANT line. We have found no proof of same, and our George is apparently not listed in the Arthur Hastings book of GRANT family. We could discount the supposed connection except that our eldest son is a double for General Grant in his wartime photos. Any clues appreciated. Pat GRANT <[email protected]>

Hall & Co., Greenfield, Massachusetts, 1935. p. 94. David saved up money from his work, invested it in real estate, and thereby acquired a large property. They toiled and prospered until they were the owners of 300 or 400 acres. They kept a large dairy, sometimes over a hundred sheep, together with large numbers of hogs that they fatted for pork, besides two spans of horses, several yokes of oxen and young stock. They made vast numberos of pounds of butter in the fall and winter and big cheeses in the summer. In the fall he would take his team and transport his butter, cheese, pork and beef to the Boston markets and return laden with provisions for himself and neighbors, medicines for the Doctor and other articles desired by the home people. He sold quantities of wool, but saved enough for family use. Some he exchanged for satienet to be made into clothing, some was taken to the carding mill and then carded into rolls to spun into yarn; some for knitting stockings and some woven for the women folks. David was a large, well-proportioned man, and was over six feet tall and weighed nearly 200 pounds. He was possessed of a resolute will, had excellent health which gave him a strong constitution. His keen judgment was often called upon to settle difficulties. Both Mr. and Mrs. Gould were always kind and obliging to all their neighbors and in time of trouble none were more willing than they to do all in their power to give the needed comfort. None ever were turned from their doors empty, who came to them for relief. They were both members of the Congregational church. Mrs. Gould was converted and joined the church when Rev. Moses Miller was pastor. Mr. Gould was selectman for several terms, and also represented Heath in the legislature in 1852. He was at one time Captain of the old Floodwood Company, this is where he gained the title of captain. They stated on the farm until 1853 when they bought the place at the Center now called the Maxwell house, and there they spent the sunset years of their life. Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the Town of Heath, Mass., Edited by Howard Chandler Robbins, Published by The Heath Historical Society. Printed by E. A. Hall & Co., Greenfield, Massachusetts, 1935. p. 92. Though a very young man when the fight occurred at the Concord Bridge and the battle of Bunker Hill, Eli Gould was filled with an intense love of liberty of a true patriot and at once enlisted in defence of his county. However, as he was much to young to enter the ranks, he was assigned the position of caring for General Washington's horse. It was a beloved service and he exercised much painstaking care to present the horse at any minute to the please owner, who often commended him for the faithful performance of his duty. Not long after the close of the war Eli Gould left Amherst and came to Heath in 1777. He bought a large tract which included the greater part of the land in the east center, and extended north quite a distance. He built the original house where the Misses White owned on Plover Hill. They lived, too, on a place over Plover Hill, this adjoined Jonathan Taylor's. David Gould was born here. They moved to New York but only stayed two years and upon his return to Heath settled on the rough and rugged rocks on Burnt Hill. This home was on the road that turns to the right near Burnt Hill schoolhouse. It was not far from the old Benson homestead, sometimes called the Howe place. Both of these houses are now gone, with very little left to mark the sites, but in the early days were filled to overflowing with the big healthy families of the Goulds and the Bensons. Eli Gould was a shoemaker by trade and went around to all the different families in the vicinity to make the boots and shoes and also to do repair work on shoes His periodical visits were looked forward to, as it was a means of learning the local news, which without newspapers was hard to get. He lived to be 82 and they were years of well organized industry. His wife also lived to be a very old lady. He was married to Bernice JOHNSON on 3 Mar 1790 in Heath, Franklin, Massachusetts. 13. 1. [CRV] Hungerfords Torrington & Harwinton, CT
    2. Peggy J Knox
    3. The Hunger fords didn't show up in this area until the very end of the 18th century and into the 19th century. The first one in Torrington was John. They may be cousins, but not direct descendents of Thomas Hungerford. The main Hungerford names are Aaron of Harwinton, and Newman of Hartford, but born in Harwinton. Charlotte Hungerford Hospital was built by Neuman, I think, but don't quote me. However, the Torrington Historical Society had an exhibit about the hospital about ten years ago. The Torrington Historical Society's director is Mark McEarchan, and the Torrington Historian is Ernie Cedar. He knows everything about Torrington, and what he doesn't know, he'll find out. I know this because I use to volunteer for the Torrington Historical Society. How they can be reached: Torrington Historical Society 192 Main Street Torrington, CT 06790 (860) 482-8260 Hours Mon-Fri 9 a.m.-4:00 p.m If you want to find out about Harwinton, I suggest you write or call the Harwinton Public Library 80 Bentley Drive Harwinton, CT 06791 (860) 485-9113 Hope this helps.
