Hi Everyone, I'm sending this to let you know that Rootsweb is deep in the process of upgrading its servers. This is going to continue during the next couple of weeks. >From Rootsweb: "The following resources are currently disabled or will be soon, due to the upgrading: any websites beginning www.rootsweb.com (including our main page), websites on Freepages, RootsWeb Surname List (RSL), Archiver (browsable mailing list archives), and mailing lists on lists3 and lists5 (which will also impact list administrator functions for those lists), and most versions of File Manager (online editors). During the transition, Password Central may show some incomplete listings, especially for Post-em Notes." What does this mean to you? It means that some list mail might be delayed in being delivered (don't worry, it won't get lost - just delayed). I have limited access to my administrative tools and in some cases cannot help with subscribing and unsubscribing, etc. This is all very sporadic and one never knows what is "up and running" and what is "off line". Please bear with us, and hopefully this will all be settled soon. Thanks for your patience, Karima List Administrator

The son of the local pastor for whom he was named and with whom he studied theology after his graduation at Yale College in 1784. He preached as a missionary in Maine before coming to Heath, and went back to Connecticut after a ministry here of 13 years, during which there were several revivals. A grandson has described him as "tender-hearted, conscientious, and devoted to his work." "He was poor, little most clergymen, and devoted to his work." "He was poor, like most clergymen, and worked quite a large farm, and that, too, generally by himself without help, in order to support his large family of nine children; laboring on the farm day by day, and writing his sermons by night. He was particularly apt, tender, and pathetic at funerals, and was therefore sent for on such occasions from far and near. He was also at all times remarkably interesting in prayer." His son, Professor Theodore Strong, said of him, "He loved to preach the gospel, and the aim of his life was to glorify God in all things; yet he was so modest that he seldom spoke of himself, so that an estimate of his character was to be formed from what he did, rather than from his profession." But for some reason the people became dissatisfied with him and "invited him to leave," which he did, driving his cattle before him, his wife and daughter riding one horse, and his children and goods following in a wagon. His ministry here terminated June 10, 1803. Sophia WOODBRIDGE and Rev Joseph STRONG had the following children: 16 i. My ancestors Joseph Hills and Marthy Standish married and migrated from Hadley MA or CT( the records were not totally clear) to Fabius, Onandaga Co., NY around the late 1790's. Unfortunately what records I had were destroyed in a fire that destroyed my home 5 months ago, so I don't have the exact info. Does anyone have any info about the Hills or Standish families in the CT River Valley around that time. I'm trying to find their parentage. Thanks, Diane Friis

Johnson mentioned that > Hezekiah Elmer was the owner of Elmore's Island: > Though I can offer no documentation at this time, my understanding has always been that Elmore's Island is the area of land in the river that is now below the old railroad bridge, just north of Coolidge Bridge on Route 9 between Northampton and Hadley. It lies closer to the Northampton side. As the railroad bridge is now part of the rail trail, it is easy to stroll out and get a look at the island from above. Further, because of the cutting action of the river, the island's present location is south of its historic one. The cause here being the river itself eroding the north end of the island and depositing silt and other material on the southern end so that it appears the island is slowly creeping down the river.
The Connecticut River today is a beautiful one.........maybe I"m prejuiced as I live her.......been many places.....other lovely river is the Shendoah in Pa and the Kennebec in Maine. the Thames {pronouced Tames in London} is a great river also, has been cleaned up...... Still looking for information on Elmore's Island. Johnson mentioned that Hezekiah Elmer was the owner of Elmore's Island: Elmer - Elmore Genealogy. Records of the Descendants of Edward Elmer, of Braintree, Eng., and Hartford, Conn. compiled by Rev. William W. Johnson Page 6 "Hezekiah3, (Edward2, Edward1) born in Hartford, Conn., June 1686; m. Miriam --------------, who died in Northfield, Mass., Sept. 19, 1750. He removed from Hartford to Deerfield, Mass., and from that place to Northfield*, May 25, 1717. Was a soldier in Capt. Kellog's Company in 1724, and the owner of Elmore's Island, in the Connecticut river, in 1731. We have no account of his death, but he was alive in 1754." *"What was originally Northfield, Massachusetts Bay, was afterwards Hinsdale, Cheshire Co., N.H., then Hinsdale,
Gershom was a farmer, a land speculator and a stone carver like his father and probably other brothers and relatives. There is a thirty two page article in Markers I on his father's carvings. They refer to him as the "Hook and Eye Man" based on his use of a design for facial features similar to the old fashion garment fastener. "His stones can be found in Hartford, Farmington, Wethersfield, Wethersfield, west of the Connecticut River, but nine out of ten are located east of the river. His stones occur frequently in towns along the Mass border, as in Enfield, Somers and the Woodstocks, and they are also found in Pomfret, Brooklyn, and Plainfield near the Rhode Island border. Although he placed an occassional stone in New London, Old Lyme, and even in New York City, most appear north of the Glastonbury-Colchester-Norwich pike." A list of persons for whom Bartlet made gravestones during his Bolton period would make a good "Who was Who in Colonial Connecticut. For examples, there were the Reverend Samuel Tudor of East Windsor, the Reverend Thomas White of Bolton, the Reverend Nathaniel Huntington of Ellington, and the Reverend Emhraim Avery of Brooklyn. Also Colonel John Whiting of West Hartford, Capt. Joseph Hooker of Farmington, Captain Marsh of Norwich, Dr. Thomas Mather of Farmington, Dr. John Wells of Wethersfield, and Dr. Jonathan Bull of Hartford. Mrs. Esther Edwards (mother of Jonathan Edwards) of East Windsor, Thomas Welles, Esquire of Glastonbury, Colonel Israel Putnam's sons of Brooklyn, Benoni Trumbull of Gilead, and David Luce of Scotland with to Norwich, Eleazer Wheelock is the founder of Dartmouth College and a friend of Nathaniel Whitaker, the Sons of Jonathan Whitaker, another relative. The stones Gershom used for the most part were gray schists from the Bartlett quarries in Bolton, CT, were he was born. He moved to Windsor about 1748 and removed to Norwich, VT about 1771. There he started using black soapstone and Vermont Marble. ** If you would like to see some of the examples of Gershom's works..
