I have completed computerized the genealogies for pages 1 - 119 and 138 - 166. Pages 120 - 137 cover the surname SMITH. This information has been merged into may Franklin County database (not available on line). While my interest remains Franklin County - I've merged these genealogies in order to link the many of he early settlers (before 1850). If you have family members with the surname Smith and are willing to share your research, it may be helpful to others on the list if your willing to post an ancestral or descendant report for 1 - 3 generations. I will perform lookups upon request as time permits. Regards, Paul W. History of the Town of Whately, Mass., 1661 - 1899, by James M. Crafts, by D. L. Crandall, Mann's Block, Orange, Mass., 1899. p. 394. A very active man, full of business, and occasionally some of his irons would burn a little. He had an immense amount of land, employing from six to twelve men through the summer season and in the winter a large number of men making brooms. He raised large crops of broom corn, and in fact, of corn, wheat, rye and oats, and cut probably over two hundred tons of hay; had large herds of cattle and cows, fattening many head of cattle as well as hogs. He was a great worker, a very temperate man, conscientious and upright in his business relations, a strict observer of all religious rites, a power for good. When he started on any project he seemed to use every effort to make it a success, as when he signed the first temperance pledge in 1828 he at once cut down his large orchard. He evidently meant buisiness. He was married to Hannah HIBBARD on 2 Apr 1807. 7. Hannah HIBBARD was born on 29 Mar 1790. She died on 1 Apr 1845 in Whately, Franklin, Massachusetts. Resided on the old homestead in Whately where his grandfather settled in 1765. He recieved the usual common school education then attended the Amherst academy from which he graduated with honor. Was a farmer, surveyor, justice of the peace, held all offices of the town at different periods, many years deacon of the Congregational church; a man of large affairs, pioneer tobacco grower and buyer in the Connecticut Valley; in politics a staunch Republican and faithful in the interest of that party. Reverses in fortune, with its consequent vexations and troubles, broke down an otherwise strong constitution, hastening his death which occurred at the age of 58 years, just at the time when his intellect, matured by an active life, was at its best. Surrounded by a wealth of friends, which his pleasant and genial nature attracted, his sudden demise caused general mourning and sorrow.

    3. Paul, There's an additional source for information on the Dwights. Gary Boyd Roberts has published (on line to members of NEHGS) a paper entitled Notable Descendants of John Dwight of Dedham, Especially via Grandsons of Northampton and Hadley. In the article, he states that there are 30 notable descendants Here's a brief clip: I now turn to the remaining Dwight descendants, thirty of whom, I think, are notable figures in American history, and sufficiently well enough known to merit an outline of their descent. These are Mrs. Robert Alphonso Taft [Martha Wheaton Bowers], wife of the U.S. senator and Republican leader; Mrs. Isabella Stewart Gardner, social leader, art collector and patroness, and builder of Fenway Court in Boston; the brothers William Morris Hunt and Richard Morris Hunt, artist and architect respectively; Mrs. Theodore Sedgwick [Pamela Dwight], wife of the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives; novelist Catharine Maria Sedgwick; Prior to this he lists other articles that he has prepared about the Dwight family noting that two were presidents of Yale. 2. Paul, I have information on the desc. of Ama (Amey) Smith, daughter of Deacon David and Hannah Willard Smith of Hadley which I want to share with you and others. In Judd's History of Hadley she is mentioned as Naomi. However in both her father's and mother's will she is named Ama (Amey). She was the mother of Daniel Smith (no father listed in any records) and I descend from her through him. Would you like me to send information through the CRV list or to your email address? Thanks very much.....Debbie Smith
