Hello, I'm very pleased to announce that the Middletown, Rutland County, VT. section of the Vermont Web Site has been expanded and now includes the complete text of "History of the Town of Middletown" (pages 641 - 665) from the "History of Rutland County Vermont: With Illustrations & Biographical Sketches of Some of Its Prominent Men And Pioneers", edited by H. Y. Smith & W. S. Rann, Published 1886. By the way, within this section, there is a very entertaining chapter, entitled "THE WOODS SCRAPE." "This affair (it having been generally termed "the Woods scrape"), occurred in Middletown about the year 1800, and deserves brief mention here; our account being drawn from the very careful investigations made by judge Barnes FRISBIE. The WOOD families were early settlers of the town and came from Bennington; some of them were in this town as early as 1782 and were originally from Norwich, Conn. In 1800 they were more numerous here than the people of any other name in the town . . . . Hi, everyone! I am searching for Joseph RIANT supposedly born in E. Haddam, CT in 1757. No records have been found. He was a Revolutionary War veteran, enlisting in 1776 at E. Haddam for the Mass. line. In 1778, he enlisted in the 3rd NH militia. He lived for a time in Temple, NH. Joseph married Sally POWERS (Isaac, Thomas, Joseph, Thomas, Walter) about 1783 in Dorchester, MA. No records found yet. Their first child, Sarah/Sally RIANT was born in Dorchester in 1783. The rest of their children were born in Franklin Co., ME. There were thirteen children in all. I don't know if any of this area is covered by the CT. River Valley, but I thought I'd give it a shot. I've been forty years looking for this guy and I know that I will find him soon. There are several other people looking for him and they have been most helpful to me in trace Sally POWERS and several lines of Joseph and Sally's descendants. I'd like to prove where Joseph RIANT was born and to whom. Thanks for any help you can offer. Regards, Jan

Glad I could be of help. Keep in mind that borders changed over the years. Present day states boundries were quite different when they were colonies. I have found old maps and name change lists to be quite useful in locating ancestral info. Also, villages were often part of a nearby town or township. Massachusetts (MA) Researcher Update: MA Vital Records Closing! The Massachusetts Genealogical Council (MGC) board has been informed that the MA Department of Health is attempting to get the MA House Bill H5158 passed this week on the third reading in the MA House http://www.state.ma.us/legis/history/h05158.htm . Continued rereading, analysis and consultations regarding this bill by MGC board members and representatives is creating deepening concerns. It is important that you request BOTH a copy of this bill from your MA rep AND an explanation of you rep's position on the contents and the implications. The text of the bill is still not yet on line at http://www.state.ma.us/scripts/legis/ltsh.idq?HouseNumber=5158 Use every avenue. Register your concerns with your MA rep http://www.state.ma.us/legis/repdis01.htm Take a copy of the bill to a town clerk or an archivist at the MA archives and ask them exactly how they would interpret and implement it. Ask the HOUSE RULES committee members about their findings on the impact and the consequences of this bill : Members appointed to the committee: Rep. Scaccia of Boston Honan of Boston Correia of Fall River DiMasi of Boston Speliotis of Danvers Binienda of Worcester Ciampa of Somerville Harkins of Needham Turkington of Falmouth Connolly of Everett Lewis of Dedham Fallon of Malden Kelly of Dalton Cleven of Chelmsford Poirier of North Attleborough http://www.state.ma.us/legis/comm/h33.htm Additional MGC recommendations can be found at http://massgencouncil.home.attbi.com/index.htm . MA residents will shoulder the additional tax dollars, but all researchers will incure both specific costs and indirect costs with this bill - with the closure of access and services! Please, report your findings to the MGC at [email protected] or Massachusetts Genealogical Council , PO Box 5393, Cochituate, MA 01778.
