I just wanted to wish the USA a very happy birthday....in spite of all her problems today, she's still a wonderful country. John and I have traveled overseas and I am telling you.....there is NO country as good as America (with exceptions of my cousins to the north- Canada, she is close second)....most Americans do not realize how good we have it here....we take America for GRANTED. Our ancestors fought and died for this great nation.....dont let them down by "it's not my problem".........vote in every election ,never show *apathy by not voting............get to know your neighbors.....there are many ways to show appreciation to our ancestors who started this country, without them, USA would have never existed as it is known now, the greatest country in the world. (of course there is always room for improvement). Stand besides her regardless of what happens, good or bad, she is counting on you to keep freedom alive and well. Happy birthday USA... --- Cynthia admin.of Massachusetts Bay Colony mailing list http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/index/Ma-Bay-Colony

Greetings: List subscribers are reminded that subject lines in the form: Re: [CRV] Re: CT-RIVER-VALLEY-D Digest V03 #219 or the like, are not acceptable on CT-RIVER-VALLEY-L. Please, when replying to a Digest message, change the subject line to something meaningful. (The same goes when replying to a message that has one of these Digest subjects itself.) All e-mail clients permit changing the subject line when replying. Also, when replying to a Digest message, make sure that you delete those parts of the quoted material that are not relevant to your reply. The "penalty" for repeated failure in this area is that the sender will be unsubscribed from Digest mode and subscribed in List mode. I would greatly prefer that no enforcement be necessary, as the messages in question have been very much on topic and helpful. Also, if you should inadvertently send such a message *once*, do NOT apologize to the list. That just clutters up the archives to no good purpose. I am not just sitting here waiting to see if I can whack somebody, and I can put up with an occasional slip of the fingers as well as anyone.... Thank you in advance. First Generation 1. Jonathan Pitkin MARSH was born on 26 Apr 1814 in Winchester, Litchfield, Connecticut. John Marsh of Hartford, CT; Marsh Genealogy 1636 - 1895; Compiled by Dwight Whitney Marsh of Amherst, Mass. Published by Press of Carpenter & Marebouse, Amherst, Mass, 1895. p. 214. Became (at 23 months) deaf and dumb, was educated at the Hartford asylum and left in 1832. He is a cabinet maker and has resided at Hartford, New York, Willimantic and Boston and in Thomaston and Bristol, Ct. He has been a public religious teacher of the deaf and dumb. John Marsh of Hartford, CT; Marsh Genealogy 1636 - 1895; Compiled by Dwight Whitney Marsh of Amherst, Mass. Published by Press of Carpenter & Marebouse, Amherst, Mass, 1895. p. 464. An Interesting History - From a Winsted, Ct. Paper. The National Exponent is a newspaper published weekly at Chicago, in the interest of the deaf. The issue of Jan. 31, contains a full account of the 55th anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan P. Marsh, in that city, with portraits of both Mr. and Mrs. Marsh. The celebration took place on Washington Boulevard at the house of a son-in-law, Edwin Bowes, with whom they reside. Mr. and Mrs. Marsh (then Paulina Bowditch) were among the early pupils of the American Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb, at Hartford, established in 1817 and the first one in America. Its first principal was Rev. Thomas H. Gallaudet, a graduate of Yale college in 1805, who went abroad to perfect himself as a teacher of the deaf mutes and spent some time in France under the instruction of the Abbe Sicard. Mr. Marsh is a native of this town, born April 26, 1814, and is an elder brother of the esteemed Edward F. Marsh, who died Feb. 4, 1895 in New Hartford. Their father Rev. Frederick Marsh, was ordained pastor of the church in Winchester Feb. 1, 1809, and continued to reside there until his death in 1873. Rev. Mr. Marsh was a college classmate of Dr. Gallaudet and was visited by him at Winchester soon after the opening of the asylum. Tradition tells that after Dr. Gallaudet had seen the bright eyed dumb boy for a few minutes, he turned to Mrs. Marsh, the boy's mother, and said, "your son tells me that you keep a horse, two cows and many sheep." "Why how is that possible." asked Mrs. Marsh, and burst into tears, for up to that time there was no hope of educating mutes and they were considered hopelessly unfortunate. Mr. Jonathan Marsh has filled a long life with usefulness and has been specially happy in his home. His only son died in boyhood. His two daughters both mutes, married mutes. One has four children who speak, now men and women; and the other three mute children. Edward F. Marsh of New Hartford, whose critical illness was announced in Monday's Herald, died that day at the age of 78 years. He was a son of the Rev. Frederick Marsh, who for 50 years was pastor of the Winchester Center church, and father of Fred W. Marsh of Winsted. Mr. Marsh was well known here by our older townspeople and has many relative hereabout, among his nephews being Judge Carrington and Henry F. and Joseph Marsh.
