He was born November 19, 1942 in Caldwell County to the late Hunter and Edith Craig Crump. Mr. Crump graduated from Gamewell High School in 1961 and eventually chose to spend his career in the convenience store industry. He earned numerous certifications through trainings by the national and state industry organizations. He was president, partner, and CEO of BCW Properties, Inc., operating nine convenience stores in three counties under the names Holiday to Go and Tobacco to Go. In addition, he was co-owner of Royal Enterprise, operating nine additional stores in Conover, Salisbury and Statesville. He was also a partner in Foothills Partners, LLC. Jim was active in the N.C. Association of Convenience Stories (NCACS) for more than two decades, holding all offices on the Board of Directors through the years, including NCACS President in 2000. In 2001, Jim was awarded the Locke Retailer of the Year Award in recognition of outstanding service on behalf of the convenience store industry. In 2003, he was awarded the Business Associate of the Year Award from the Caldwell Chapter of ABWA, and in 2005, the Small Business of the Year Award from the Caldwell County Chamber of Commerce. Jim also served on the Board of Directors and on various committees for Cedar Rock Country Club. Both civic and philanthropically minded, Jim organized and contributed to community programs to improve the lives of others. At the national level, he sponsored various fund-raising efforts for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, including a local golf tournament for the past 16 years, contributing hundreds of thousands of dollars for the association's work through the years, for which he received a special award of thanks from Jerry Lewis in February 2008. He sponsored the "Fill the Boot" campaign for the local National Guard Family Readiness Group and was founder and continuing supporter of the local "Koats for Kids" program to collect and distribute coats to needy school-age children. In addition, Jim sponsored various programs for the Lenoir Police Department and Caldwell County Sheriff's Office, including the "Toys for Tots" program. He provided match monies to college scholarships awarded by the NCACS and annually supported the CCC&TI Education Foundation and Project G! raduation. An avid follower and supporter of local athletics, Jim contributed specifically to American Legion Post 29 Baseball, Hibriten High School and Happy Valley Optimist programs. Jim was particularly proud of his membership in United Presbyterian Church of Lenoir, where he served as an elder for the past 32 years. He served on various church committees through the years and as chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee.
