I think Ed is right. I have the text of Robert's will and he did not mention a son John. His sons were Christian, Robert, Josiah, Anderson, Richard and Thomas. My ancestor was Josias Crump of Northampton Co., NC, son of Joseph and brother of Robert. Robert's will was dated 1801, but apparently not finally probated until 1805. At that time it was contested by "some of the relatives of the said Crump, James(?) Garnett and others, but the court decided that the will was valid. Hope this helps.
