They were Atlas, John F., and Woodson. Atlas and Woodson were both sons of Stephen Crump, s/o John Bushrod Crump. John F. was a son of John Bushrod Crump's son James. > >Stephen was a large land owner, and when he died in 1853 his estate was divided between 15 heirs, and at the time it included 45 slaves. It would appear, then, that his sons each inheirited some of Stephen's slaves. > >John F. Crump was also a slave owner. The Thomas Wade Chapter, DAR - NC Bible, Cemetery Records, Etc. (1952)includes John F. Crump (and his wife Charlotte F. Kendall)'s Bible Record (said to be found among some discarded papers) included his children - and the birth of several slave children. The four slaves mentioned were Elen, b. Mar 12, 1847, Ann b. Oct 5, 1848, Matilda, b Sep 14, 1850, and Hollom b June 18??. > >In 1860 there were six Crumps in Anson County. Alexander, James, Rowlins, Stephen, Walter, and Woodson. Woodson, son of Stephen was the only one of the 1850 Crumps still there. > >This does NOT answer Joyce's question, but we know that there were Crumps with slaves there during the period. > >John F. Crump is my ancestor, and I know that two of his three sons, James Franklin Crump and Reuben K. Crump, moved on to Arkansas after the civil war. I am not sure about the other son, George. George was born in Anson in 1848. No more information on him. > >So it would appear that Stephen Crump's children were the most likely Crumps in Anson to have slaves in the 1850 - 1865 time frame. > >Ed Crump
