He was born February 25, 1987 in Catawba County to Michael and Lynne Crump. He was preceded in death by one brother Sean Edward Crump and his grandfather Sherman Crump. Joseph was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was employed with MDI. Survivors include parents Mr. and Mrs. Michael and Lynne Crump of the home; his grandmother Margie Crump, of Lenoir; a brother, Phillip Crump, of Lenoir and numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 31, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Alan Carr and Rev. Bill Dyson officiating. Mr. Crump was born July 9, 1918, in Mecklenburg County to William A. Crump, and Hattie Helms Crump and was the seventh of 10 children raised on a farm in Mint Hill. After leaving the family farm, he joined the U.S. Civilian Conservation Corps in Caldwell County (Mortimer), where he met his wife to be, Betty Louise Keller. Mr. Crump also worked on construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway briefly and then moved to Morganton before entering the Army to serve his country in World War II in Europe. After returning from World War II, Mr. Crump returned to Morganton and worked in various furniture factories. In the 1950s, he moved to Aiken, S.C., to work on the Savannah River Project, and then moved to New York City for two years, where he worked for his brother who owned a wrought iron business. Returning to Burke County and settled in ! the Oak Hill community in 1956, he returned to working in the furniture industry until 1961 when began a career with Duke Energy and worked on many local dam construction projects along the Catawba River in North and South Carolina. Mr. Crump retired in 1977. After retiring from Duke Energy, Mr. Crump devoted his time to working in his wood shop, volunteering in the community and received an award from Broughton Hospital as Burke's Best Volunteer in 1989. Mr. Crump's first wife passed away to be with the Lord on Oct. 6, 1985. Mr. Crump remarried a widow, Velma Fitzgerald of Yancey County, on April 7, 1991. Thad and Velma spent 10 years together traveling and enjoying their retirement together before Velma went to be with the Lord in December 2001. Mr. Crump was a past president of the Civilian Conservation Corps Alumni in Mortimer. He was also a past member of the American Legion in Morganton and an active member of Zion Baptist Church since 1956. In addition to his wives a! nd parents, he was also preceded in death by two sons, Thad Richard Cr ump Jr. and Hugh Gordon Crump. He is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann Davis and husband, Jim, of Morganton; one son, William Neil Crump of Oak Hill community; a daughter-in-law, Betty Crump of Charlotte; six grandchildren, Betsy Black and husband, Thomas, of Charlotte, Allison Hayes and husband, Jeff, of Cherryville, Caroline Houghton and husband, Rex, of Troutman, Hugh Crump Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Charlotte, Richard Neil Crump of Claremont, James Richard Davis of Clarksville, Tenn. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 4, 2007, at 3 p.m. at Zion Baptist Church. Dr. Ralph May and the Rev. David Orders will officiate. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Donations may be made to Zion Baptist Church or Hospice of Burke County in Mr. Crump's Honor. Hi Linda, thanks for the response. My gg grandmother, Mary CRUMP was born in 1836 at Berkeley, Gloucestershire, England. She was buried 19 February 1907 at Henbury, Gloucestershire, England. Mary Crump married George ENGLAND.
