June, I am descendant of Sidney Smith Crumley. He was my G Grandfather. His son William Thomas was my grandfather. Sidney was the sixth child of Charles Heaton Crumley, who in turn, was the oldest of William Smith Crumley. William Smith was one of the first CRUMLEY who came to Habersham Co in N/E Ga. settling in Nacoochee Valley which is now in White Co. This valley is the big valley, you enter into just as you cross the Chattacoochee River close to Helen, on Ga Hwy 75. On the 1830 Habersham Co. Census, there were six CRUMLEY families listed. They were Thomas Crumby (Crumley), Henry Morgan Crumby (Crumley), Benjamin H Crumly, Robert H Crumly (Crumley), Robert Crumby (Crumley), and William Smith Crumley. All of these families took on the surname of CRUMLEY later. CRUMLEY had many different variants such as: Crumby, Crumbly, Crumbey, Crumly, and Crumbley. CRUMLEY is the correct and primary surname. Robert and Henry Crumby were sons of Thomas. Robert H. was a son of Benjamin. William Smith was a son of Charles Crumley. Charles never came to Ga. He died about 1800 back in SC when William Smith was only four. Thomas, Charles, and Benjamin H. were brothers. They came to Habersham Co from Newberry Co., SC, by the way of Buncombe Co., NC in the early 1820s. Leander F. Crumley is the eighth children of Henry Morgan. Sidney is a second cousin to Leander F. Leander F. fought in Civil War with the Army of Tennessee CSA, but died while on furlough in Cleveland, Ga. He is buried on the cemetery of Zion Interdomination Church on Hwy 515 near Cleveland. Sidney fought in the Army of No Virginia CSA . Sidney is buried in Chattacoochee Methodist Church Cemetery. I only know of a Mae Crumley who was the sixth child of Sidney. She went by the name of Clerrah (Annie) Mae Sidney was a Sixth Generation Crumley, whereas Leander was a fifth. Contact Roger Kirk at E-Mail [email protected] who can help you greatly on Leander F..
