    3. Truett, It is true that there is a Rebecca Crumley buried at Cadiz Union Cemetery, but I do not think she was the wife of Thomas Crumley's son, John. I have never been able to determine just who she was, but there are several reasons I think she was not the wife of the John you are asking about. Her headstone does say she was the "Wife of John Crumley," and she would have been of an age to marry John. He was born in 1813, and Rebecca was born 3 February 1822. [She died 30 June 1870 at the age of 48y, 4m, 27d.] Given that birth date, I do not believe she would have been married in 1832. [According to the cemetery listing for Cadiz Union, there is a missing stone next to Rebecca's marker which may well have been that of her husband.] However, the biggest obstacle to her having been his wife is that Rebecca survived the John Crumley buried at Dickerson Church. She died in 1870 and he died in 1865. The appraisal of his estate (dated 2 May 1865) contains the following statements, "The following articles of furniture and house hold goods the(y) find Julia Crumley the widow of said decedent brought with her at the time of her marriage or came to her by bequest or gift or was purchased with her separate money afterwards 1 Looking Glass 3 Window Blinds & Curtins 1 Arm chair 1 Candle Stand 2 foot stools 1 Porcelain Kettle 4 Goblets 1 Terreen Five deep dishes 2 Bowls 1 Tin Bucket 1 Trunk one lot of Crockery." and "And we also set off and also to Julia Crumley the widow of said deceased & Ella Crumley his child under fifteen years of age the following property for their support for 12 months from the time of his decease....." The only way Rebecca could have been John's wife would be if they had divorced, and I have found no indication of that - or of a marriage either. If they had divorced, I think it unlikely she would be identified on her tombstone as the "Wife of John Crumley." It is certainly not impossible that John had been married prior to his wedding to Julia. If he was married previously, there is no record of it in Harrison County. He was just shy of forty-one when he married Julia. I do not know how old she was at the time. The estate record only says that Ella was under fifteen years of age - she might have been anything from a newborn to fourteen years old. John and Julia had been married only thirteen months when he died, so I suspect Ella was quite young, but I do not know for certain. I hope to find Julia on the 1870 census one of these days and settle that question. There is no wife buried with John at Dickerson Church, which also makes me think his widow may have remarried, particularly if she was substantially younger than he was. So far as I know, John did not serve in the Civil War. His brother, James, did serve in Company I of the 13th O.V.I. [John and James are buried beside one another.] Larry Dickerson
