Roger, After seeing the questions about General Crumley, Vernon remembered the name because of it being so unusual and found our information we had gotten off his tombstone.. Years ago, maybe 20 or 22 years ago, we were in Georgia and while we were there we did some searching for information on Vernon's mother's family... Kimsey . We were in a cemetery at Chattahoochee Baptist Church out of Clarksville, Ga. and saw a marker for General Mardy Crumley b. 7-29-1893 d. 9-30- 1918. This seems to be the same one Rich was talking about. Since we didn't know how to tie him into any of our line of Crumlys, we had not thought any more about it. But I did copy all the information off his marker while we were there because of the name. Glad we got it now... wish we had taken a picture.. but didn't. So with out a picture, what I have is not documented, but if someone, maybe close by, can find it, it can be documented. And the middle name is MARDY. We had noticed that the info Rich has, mentioned him dying aboard a ship and I wondered about his burial site... I am wondering if it was just a marker or if somehow they were able to send his body back. In those early years, I didn't figure they could and am wondering if he might have been buried at sea and someone just put a marker up in his memory.. ?? Just some idle wonderings...?? Another thing I wondered about... is his name GENERAL or was he a general in the army? Hope this will help. Ruth Crumly .. Just as I have never found out Leander's middle name to go with the "F". As to the Hardy in his middle name, this would have been his GGrandfather's name on the Jackson side (Nancy's father). As I said, this is just my thinking...or am I out in left field? Does anyone have documentation of the name Mardy? I can see how the H and M could be confused, but I have no idea for sure which is correct now. Roger Kirk > > -------------------------------------------------- The Crumly's [email protected]
Ruth, Vernon, or Roger, Well I am somewhat confused with this message. A book entitled, " Habersham and White Counties Cemeteries" complied by NE GA regional Library page 122 states the following: General Mardy b. July 29, 1898 d. Sept. 30, 1918 He appears to be buried between J. A. Crumley b. Apr. 15, 1859 d. June 18, 1933 h/o of Sallie and Sallie b. Dec. 12, 1866 d. Oct. 12, 1939 Are these his parents? Is this who you are talking about ... Alexander and Sarah? They are listed in the White Co marriage index as being Alexander Crumley and Sallie Robertson. Was Sallie a nickname for Sarah? As far as I know they are the only three Crumleys buried in Chattahoochee Baptist Church Cemetery Although the book has in parens. (#one) On page 126 of this same book appears a listing for eight Crumleys all of whom are buried in the Chattahoochee Methodist Cemetery and was the scene of some of the filming of the movie Truett wrote about today. On Alexander's first name, is it John or James and where is that documented? Is this L.F. 's son? Other words is General Mardy L.F.'s grandson?? On page 170 of this book is the record of L.F. and Nancy's grave in Old Zion Cem. Thanks for any clarification you can offer. And the cemetery book should give you the documentation you asked for on Mardy being his middle name. Since he died in 1918 there probably is a death certificate on him at the Ga Archives building or in White Co records. Ken, this General Mardy was the sixth child of James Alexander and Sarah (Sallie) Robinson Crumley. General supposely died at sea during the time of World War I. He was probable buried at sea and a marker was placed in the cemetery near his father and mother. It seems that this family of James Alexander moved about in several counties of this part of Ga.. James and Sarah (Sallie) produced 14 children. This family lived in White, Habersham, Banks, and Hall counties. James was probable a farmer who also worked in the textile plants around Gainesville, Hall Co.. James Alexander was the fourth child of Leander F. and Nancy E. Jackson of White Co. Leander died at home during the Civil War while on leave. He died of Chronic Diarraha. He is buried in the cemetery which you listed.
