    3. There's a death record for a Sarah B. Crumley died Sept. 1935 in Jefferson Co., Ala. Vol. 40, Roll 3, Page 19544. Now there's also a Thomas J. Crumley died Jan. 1927 in Jefferson Co., Ala. Vol. 3, Roll 2, page 1130. Since Margaret Lawless' TJ was born the same year and died the same month and year as TJ son of John Clark Crumly, I don't know which TJ this death record is for. 3. Truett, It is true that there is a Rebecca Crumley buried at Cadiz Union Cemetery, but I do not think she was the wife of Thomas Crumley's son, John. I have never been able to determine just who she was, but there are several reasons I think she was not the wife of the John you are asking about. Her headstone does say she was the "Wife of John Crumley," and she would have been of an age to marry John. He was born in 1813, and Rebecca was born 3 February 1822. [She died 30 June 1870 at the age of 48y, 4m, 27d.] Given that birth date, I do not believe she would have been married in 1832. [According to the cemetery listing for Cadiz Union, there is a missing stone next to Rebecca's marker which may well have been that of her husband.] However, the biggest obstacle to her having been his wife is that Rebecca survived the John Crumley buried at Dickerson Church. She died in 1870 and he died in 1865. The appraisal of his estate (dated 2 May 1865) contains the following statements, "The following articles of furniture and house hold goods the(y) find Julia Crumley the widow of said decedent brought with her at the time of her marriage or came to her by bequest or gift or was purchased with her separate money afterwards 1 Looking Glass 3 Window Blinds & Curtins 1 Arm chair 1 Candle Stand 2 foot stools 1 Porcelain Kettle 4 Goblets 1 Terreen Five deep dishes 2 Bowls 1 Tin Bucket 1 Trunk one lot of Crockery." and "And we also set off and also to Julia Crumley the widow of said deceased & Ella Crumley his child under fifteen years of age the following property for their support for 12 months from the time of his decease....." The only way Rebecca could have been John's wife would be if they had divorced, and I have found no indication of that - or of a marriage either. If they had divorced, I think it unlikely she would be identified on her tombstone as the "Wife of John Crumley." It is certainly not impossible that John had been married prior to his wedding to Julia. If he was married previously, there is no record of it in Harrison County. He was just shy of forty-one when he married Julia. I do not know how old she was at the time. The estate record only says that Ella was under fifteen years of age - she might have been anything from a newborn to fourteen years old. John and Julia had been married only thirteen months when he died, so I suspect Ella was quite young, but I do not know for certain. I hope to find Julia on the 1870 census one of these days and settle that question. There is no wife buried with John at Dickerson Church, which also makes me think his widow may have remarried, particularly if she was substantially younger than he was. So far as I know, John did not serve in the Civil War. His brother, James, did serve in Company I of the 13th O.V.I. [John and James are buried beside one another.] Larry Dickerson

    3. Nancy, this is the Thomas Jefferson Crumly (Crumley) that I am interested in and trying to obtain info on. Thomas` father (John Clark Crumly) migrated to Dekalb Co., Al. in the 1870`s. Let me have all info that you can dig up. 3. Truett, your original inquiry showed birthdate of TJC that is buried in Crumly Chapel UMC Cemetery. This is my grandmother's brother. The birthdate of the one, son of John and Jane Crumly, is different. This one is Not buried in Crumly Chapel Cem. even tho you state from the obit Thomas Jefferson & Sara Fields Crumly were of Birmingham, Jefferson Co. AL. I know nothing about him or his burial, but would suspect he might be buried in Crossville area??? But be sure you show the different birthdates, please.. this may keep them separated. 3. Hi Truett, I have the information you need on the Thomas Jefferson Crumly d. 1/24/1927, buried in Crumly Chapel UM Cem. Birmingham, AL. This TJCrumly is lst child of Benjamin Newton Crumly and Arabella Crumly. TJC is the oldest brother of my grandmother, so I know whereof I speak. I have the B.N.Crumly Bible. This TJC was born 7/15/1861 marr. Effie Williams, daughter of Rev. James Williams and Julia Ann McAbee. TJC and Effie only had 2 sons. The eldest, Robert M. was b. 1/24/1903 and d. 5/6/1970. He served in WWII and is buried in Crumly Chapel Cem. The 2nd son was Perry Crumly b. 5/1/1906 and died of diptheria 10/13/1907, buried Crumly Chapel Cem. There is another Thomas Jefferson Crumly, b. Ga. who is 7th child of John Clark Crumly and Jane Crumly of Crossville, AL. This TJC was b. 5/3/1861 and died 1/21/1927. This one is probably buried in Crossville, but this is NOT the one buried at Crumly Chapel UMC Cemetery. It is a coincidence that these 2 Thomas Jefferson Crumlys were b. same year and died within a few days of each other. The Crossville TJC was in DeKalb Co. AL not Jefferson Co. AL. This is about the 3rd time I have explained these 2 Thomas Jefferson Crumlys. I know I have written to Truett about them once if not twice. Hope this clears all misinformation up about these 2 guys. 3. John Crumley, son of Thomas Crumley and Elizabeth Gardner, was born 6 April 1813. He married Julia F. Giesey in Harrison County on 17 March 1864. They had one known child, a daughter, Ella, mentioned in the settlement of John's estate. He died 18 April 1865 and is buried at the Dickerson M.E. Church near Cadiz. Julia survived John, but I do not know what became of her. A Julia F. Crumley married David H. Tweedy in Jefferson County, Ohio on 5 November 1873, but I have not yet determined whether she was John's widow, though it seems probable. I do not know when Julia died, where she is buried, nor do I know anything else of the daughter, Ella.

    3. I do not know how, or if, the physician James Crumley is related to Thomas of Harrison County, Ohio. James and his wife, Jane, are buried at the Feed Springs Cemetery in Franklin Township, Harrison County. There is a marker which says it was erected in 1987 by their great-grandson, Frank W. McGuire, and has inscriptions for, "James Crumley, physician, b. 1797, d. 5 February 1851, 53y, 3m" and "Jane Crumley, wife of James, b. 1801, d. 31 May 1876, 75y." I do not know anything else about them. While in Ohio last month, I did finally find out what became of one of the sons of Thomas Crumley and Elizabeth Gardner. Their son, Joseph, and his wife, Elizabeth Crabtree, are buried at the Union Cemetery in Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County. Their obituaries are as follows: The Uhrichsville Chronicle, April 26th, 1905 Mrs. Crumley Mrs. Elizabeth Crumley, wife of Joseph Crumley, died Saturday morning at 10:30 o’clock at her home in east Fourth street, at the age of 78 years. She had been an invalid for years. Mrs. Crumley’s maiden name was Elizabeth Crabtree. She was born in Deersville Feb. 14, 1827, and spent the early part of her life there. She was married to Mr. Crumley at Deersville in 1851. For the past thirty-five years they have lived in Uhrichsville. One brother, Lemuel Crabtree, and a sister, Mrs. Thomas Finnical, both of Deersville, survive her. ------------------------------------- The Uhrichsville Chronicle, December 18th, 1907 Joseph Crumley Passes Away Joseph Crumley, one of the oldest residents of the twin cities, died at the house of Mrs. Ross McCullough in Grant street, Dennison, Sunday afternoon at 12:30. Few men in either of the two towns were more widely known and none enjoyed to a greater degree the sincere respect of friends and acquaintances. Since the death of his wife about three years ago Mr. Crumley seemed to have lost his hold on life and gradually drifted with the tide of old age until he passed peacefully away. Physicians were unable to find any evidence of specific disease. Death was due to general debility. Mr. Crumley, who was almost 87 years of age, was born on Short Creek in Harrison county April 14, 1821. For a number of years he followed farming in the vicinity where he was born. Thirty?three years ago he removed to Uhrichsville and built a home in Fourth street where he resided until about one year ago, when he went to Dennison to spend his closing days with Mrs. McCullough. No children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Crumley, but they reared five girls to young womanhood, caring for them with all a parents’ love. One of these was Mrs. McCullough, who was happy to return in the last years of her benefactor’s life some of that care and kindness which she had received at his hands in her childhood. Mrs. Albert Quimby and Mrs. Ross Lewis were also reared in the Crumley home. While he never entirely gave up farming, Mr. Crumley was for a time in the meat business here with James Harvey. He had been for years a member of the Methodist Episcopal church here. He is universally remembered by the people of the twin cities as a manly Christian man who carried into his daily life his faith in Christ’s teachings. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. ------------------------------------------- As to Truett's previous question about the children of Thomas, Jr., I can only pass along information that was sent to me several years ago, by Cheryl Crumley-Wall who, I think, is or was a subscriber to this list. I have not personally had occasion to research this line. Thomas, Jr. was certainly still in Harrison County in August of 1830 when he was appointed the administrator of the estate of his brother, Samuel. He married Elizabeth Davis in Harrison County on 31 August 1830. I believe he moved to Wells County, Indiana c. 1844. Of their children: Ira married Margaret Myers in Wells County, Indiana 10 March 1861. Moved to Kansas. John did not marry. Eliza married James Hall, 7 December 1856 [I presume in Wells County]. Rachel Ann married Richard Heep, 21 September 1856, Wells County. Thomas James married Elizabeth Solomon, 10 September 1868, Wells County. Elizabeth [No info that she married]. Samuel McGue married Sara Elizabeth Brunk, 23 September 1869, Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana. Ruth Jane, did not marry. Moved to Kansas with her brother, Ira.

    3. I have the 1850 census record for James Crumley. According to the record (Harrison County, OH), he a physician, age 49, and born in Ireland. Other family members wrere Jane, 48, b. PA; Elizabeth, 20, b. OH; Margaret, 18, b. OH; Jane, 16; b. OH; and Isabelle, 10, b. OH. I think it's interesting that he moved to Harrison County, where there were several of our James Crumley descendents living. Maybe that's a clue to the origin of the family. paul -----Original Message----- From: Truett Crumley [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, September 20, 2002 8:55 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [CRUMLEY] Ohio cousins To Larry Dickerson and Paul Nichols. Paul, you mentioned a James Crumley (Irish immigrant) being born 1801 migrated to Harrison Co., Ohio in your E-Mail of 4-20-2002 (Paul). Was this James born in America? Do you and Larry have any additional info on this CRUMLEY? Also Thomas brothers (Aaron ans Stephen) migrated to Harrison Co and Stephen moved on to Greene Co., Ohio. If you or Larry have additional info on this JAMES CRUMLEY, please let me hear from you.
