I was directing my message at those people who had already established links with the area. Anyone else with an interest in the name could have used something like Google to locate the towns. As for South Carolina, I wish that I could help you with your research but I'm afraid that I don't have any information that links to this location. Happy hunting.
Joyce, Calderdale is an administrative region within West Yorkshire, England. Anyone who is researching the name in the locations that I mentioned will know exactly where it is. And you expect everyone everywhere to have memorized every town in England? What about Australians researching the name? Unless your family was nailed to the spot, you need to be more specific, just in case someone in your family emigrated, and may have more info on your family than you do. You never know where information is going to come from, and the more info you give, the more likely you are to get a response. I'm looking for some Crowthers in South Carolina, and I don't have a CLUE what the town names are there. See what I mean?

I am looking for any information I can find on the above lady. She was born Kate COPSEY in 1889 in Suffolk. She moved to Manchester around 1908 and had a son Eric COPSEY there in 1913. She had another son in 1921 called Walter Kendellan ROOSE. I can find no ROOSE marriage for her although father registered the birth of Walter. At some time she became CROWTHER but so far I have found no trace of a marriage. Does anyone out there know anything about Kate? I hope someone can help. Kay
There are records of at least two generations with males by the name of Whiteley Crowther in the same area. I believe that it was common practice for the first-born son to be given the forename of the mother's maiden name and sometimes the son of such a male would bear the same name. Hence, the first son of father A.B and mother C.D would bear the name of D.B as would the first son of D.B. ----Original Message Follows---- From: [email protected] Reply-To: [email protected] To: [email protected] Subject: [CROWTHER] Crowther and Normanton Date: 21 Feb 2006 13:30:49 -0700 This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Marie, My Crowther line came into Maryland, USA in the early to mid 1700,s. We have no proof, but family legend thinks that they came from Yorkshire. Sorry I could not make a match. He was married to Sarah Ann and had children William (b1858), Albert (b1864), Arthur (b1867), Mary Ann (b1869), Clara (b1871), George (b1877), Alfred (b1880). Charles’ father was George Crowther, also coal miner, born approx 1788. George was married to Ann by 1851 but previously married to Nancy Jagger, I think. Georges children were Joseph (b1822), William (b1826), Charles (b1829), John (b1832), George (b1837). I believe Charles’ father George was born in Dewsbury. He was either christened on 24 Oct 1787 and his father was also George or christened on 24 March 1788 and his father was James. I would love to hear from you if you share this part of my family tree or can tell me more about Charles and George Crowther and their ancestors.
A dream coming true. The Family History Library is starting to digitize their book holdings, mostly family histories to date, and they are putting them on-line, fully search able by any word or advanced search combinations. Five thousand plus of these books are on the Brigham Young University Library servers and readily accessible, NOW! Here is a partial clip of an announcement I just received and I have only made a quick check of how to find them and how to search, but it is very exciting "The LDS Family History Library has announced that it has begun the process of digitizing and making available on the Internet all of the Family History books in their collection. These are primarily books in the "929.273Series" that are currently housed on the first floor of the Family History Library (previously housed on the fourth floor of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building). At the present time (September 2005), about 5000 books have been digitized and are available, and they have announced that they are adding about 100 titles a week to the on-line collection. Copyright issues are playing a role in determining the order in which they progress through this task; books out of copyright are being done first." Go to the web site of the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU at http://www.lib.byu.edu/ , then on the home page, follow the links:Find Other Materials; Electronic; On Line Collections at BYU; Text Collections tab; Family History Archive from the list of collections that are displayed. The search box on the left seems to be he one to find your books at and the search box on the right is for searching within the pages on screen. Have Fun Searching Shirley Fergus List Mom
My elusive Crowther ancestor is George Edward born Apr 1854 . All we "know" is that he was born in Co. Durham ( from stories) . He was in the Garrison that came to Halifax in 1879-1881. It was said that he had become an orphan & a sister & brother were sent to Pennsylvania, USA & to Australia. We cannot seem to find anything else. I have tried to search records but I haven't had any luck. I will keep trying. Any help would be appreciated. I am searching for George Edward Crowther, born 1854 in Co. Durham. He was in the Garrison in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada in 1880-1881. Story is that he left England on a ship & left behind an orphaned sister & brother , one went to Pennsylvania, USA & one went to Australia. That is the only story that we have ever had, Would love to find where he came from. Many thanks, Candace Boudreau, NS, Canada
