In the hope of attracting the attention of those who may be interested and perhaps newly subscribed, I would like to repeat my interests. I am trying to find links to Robert and Betty Crowther of Pickwood Scar and their children Israel, Charles, Squire, Edwin, Emma and James. If anyone has any information that links to Crowther individuals or families within the Elland, Norland, Sowerby Bridge area of Calderdale, particularly around 1800-1900, then I should be grateful if they would pass it on. Some months ago a number of subscribers very kindly supplied me with extracts from the 1881 census for some of the regions around Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire. I have, for my own purposes, now put this information into the form of a series of tables on a Microsoft Access database. The database lists all recorded Crowthers within the area. I tried to submit the database to the mailing lists but for some technical reason it could not be passed on. If anyone would like to have the information then I would be pleased to send it as an attachment in a reply to a request. If anyone could supply me with a listing of the 1881 census regions then I should be most grateful. Hopefully, I shall at some time be able to expand my database to cover other regions - once I've begged for the source material! Regards, John. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Several of my ancestors in Almondbury appear to have been christened twice - in the parish church and on the same date in the Wesleyan Chapel in Huddersfield nearby. Can anyone shed any light on this or has anyone any info/links on Wesleyan religion etc. Thanks Caroline [email protected] ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com
I have a long line of Crothers (earliest date 1762) in Cornwall. Family story is that it was originally Scottish, but no facts to support same. The family lived in Cornwall for over 100 years, during that time often (at least a quarter of the entries) in the records the name was written as Crowthers. I found Crowthers and/or MacCrowthers as septs of the Clan MacGregor, which was persecuted in Scotland. I'm trying to find out if this Crothers family was originally a Crowthers that had to leave Scotland outright or via the Border area between Scotland and England (there were many Crowthers in that area, especially in Yorkshire). The earliest record I have is for the marriage of John Crothers to Elizabeth Puckinghorn in Devon in 1762. It is noted he is of the HMS Drake. Interesting fact, but hardly conducive to locating his birthplace, which is still unknown. I have not been able to locate a Crothers in Cornwall, related or not, before that date. John and Elizabeth raised their families in the Redruth/Illogan area of Cornwall, and that was where their descendants lived for over a century (my g-grandmother Eliza Crothers emigrated to the US in 1897). Any and all help would be appreciated. Kathy

Is there anyone there searching a CROWTER family? Back to around 1800 the Crowters were all born (and often married) in Brighton or Hove, until Henry Crowter who was born in St Mary's, Southampton. Family names are commonly - Alfred, Ernest, Henry, Jane, Emily, Or CROWTHER (in Brighton and Hove, Sussex, or Hampshire before 1800.) So far, my ancestors are all Crowters, but I'm sure the name changed from Crowther at some point. I don't know how reliable it is, but on the IGI, several relatives I know were Crowter are listed as Crowther. There's even a birth registered as Crowther and the father's name is given as Crowter. Has anyone else found anything like this? Katherine Luck, Sussex
I'd like to refresh my previous posting in the hope that any newcomers might be able to help........ Robert CROWTHER and his wife Betty lived with their children Israel, Charles, Squire, Edwin, James and Emma at Pickwood Scar, between Copley and Norland on the outskirts of Halifax, West Yorkshire, around 1800-1850. I already hold information regarding the families of these siblings but I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has any information regarding any of these individuals, their ancestors or their descendants, many of whom are known to reside within the Calderdale area of West Yorkshire. The builders A. & O. Crowther of Greetland are believed to be connected somewhere along the line, and it is thought that there are links to Crowthers in the Erringden area. The family of James and his wife Hannah were living at Apple House Terrace in Luddenden in 1881. Israel had died by this time, but his wife Mary still lived at Heath Hall, Norland. Already there is documented history of Crowther families from as far back as the late 13th century through to the Civil War period. My ultimate goal is to create a directory of Crowthers in Calderdale to show how the various families originated and developed over the years. ANY information about ANY Crowther is welcomed; each small piece is a contribution to the whole picture, and if it does not yet fit to what I already have then it could do one day. Someone somewhere out there knows something; if it is you then please call me. Regards, John. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Yesterday, I posted the URL of the website I compiled using my genealogy info. (http://netnow.micron.net/~geoffrey/jett/jettweb.htm) This morning I had 35 letters! I will be answering them all, but unfortunately, my boss gets sort of mad if don't show up for work now and then, so my answers won't all be going out today!! I had a lot of info sent to me, and will be glad to share everything. I do want to add one thing, since some of you have pointed out some mistakes. I appreciate the help, and will try to get my info corrected as soon as I can, and as much as I can. Some of my data came from a file from the LDS Family History Center, and although the FHC info is helpful, it can sometimes bring in errors. I do appreciate their help, though. If you are going to take my information and use it in your data, I will be flattered, but please contact me to find out where I got the stuff. Sometimes, I may even remember!! I didn't have room on my server to add sources, or notes, but I may have that info here at home. I will be glad to share. Since I do not have the time to devote all my energy to genealogy (which I sometimes regret!!) I tend to rely on other sources too much without confirming every piece of data. I really appreciate the returns on my posting, and I promise that I will get replies out as soon as I can. Good luck in researching Steve [email protected] www.canyoncounty.org/juvdet/sjett.htm
