    3. WASHINGTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA CROSSWHITES We have traced the ancestry of the Washington County, Virginia Crosswhites back from the 1850's to Stokes County, North Carolina and from there to Culpepper County, Virginia in the 1700's. We haven't gone forward much past 1850. However, we do have a note to add to the statement that Robert Crosswhite and his wife Nancy had children Sarah (age 22), Golden (age 19) and Francis (age 25), as indicated in the 1850 census of Washington County, Virginia. Robert and Nancy are in Dwelling No. 274 on page 87 of the original 1850 census. Four houses away, in Dwelling No. 270 on page 86, in the household of William Roberts, is another son of Robert and Nancy named Jacob Crosswhite. Robert Crosswhite married Anna Stultz in Stokes County, North Carolina, bond dated March 9, 1816. "Nancy" is officially a diminutive of Anna and it is generally accepted that Nancy in the 1850 census of Washington County is this same Anna. Stultz sounds more German than Cherokee. It is important to differentiate Robert's son Golding ("Golden") from his brother Golding, which has also been found spelled "Golden." His brother Golding married Anna Pinnigar and his son Golding married Elizabeth Hockett. Elizabeth Crosswhite (the younger Golden's wife) was heir of Isaac Hockett by his will dated June 28, 1882 in Washington County Will Book 21, page 130. The tombstone of the younger Golden reads 1 April 1833 - 6 March 1914. The stone of his wife Elizabeth [Hockett] Crosswhite reads 15 April 1836 - 16 January 1904. Robert's brother Golding did not remain in Stokes County, North Carolina. He is found in the 1840 census of Hardin County, Tennessee with nine persons in his household. Golding and its nickname "Golden" are very common names in this line, including that branch which settled in Morgan County, Missouri. This is because the matriarch of the line was Milley Golding who married William Crosthwait/Crosswhite. One wonders if Samuel G. Crosswhite's middle name was Golding. We will look forward to hearing more about Samuel G. Crosswhite and his descendants. Sorry we can't add anything further now. We have an article on the William Crosthwait/Milley Golding line which we will send anyone interested by U. S. Mail for free. Frank S. Crosswhite and Carol D.
