    3. Dear Subscriber's, (I tried twice to send this note (with a file attached) to the list and the note failed to come back to me. So, I will assume the file I attached caused a problem and I will try it this way.) I am Burt Crosswhite of McAlester, OK, a descendent (4th, perhaps 5th, gt.grandson) of Abraham Crosthwait and 3rd gt. grandson of George Crosswhite, b. May 2, 1772, of Carter Co., TN. For those of you who might be interested, and several have asked for this information, I am sending along two items: (1) A typed version of Abraham Crosthwait's will, and; (2) a court record listing Abraham Crosswhite and his son, or grandson, George Crosswhite as members serving on a Jury together. I will welcome any information any of you can provide on the descendents of George Crosswhite, particularly John Melvin Crosswhite, Sr., and Abraham Lincoln Crosswhite - his son and grandson. Abraham L. Crosswhite was my gt. grandfather. I will, of course, be most happy to share information I have. The transcription of Abraham's will is best effort, and was sent to me by several people. This one by Frank Crosswhite. I have a scanned *.bmp image of the original, or a copy of the original, sent to me by another individual. The will appears to have been folded and refolded many times. According to Mrs. Bettye Morley, who was with the Johnson County, TN Historical Society until she retired, the will was found by Lucille Loyd Shell of Oklahoma. Mrs. Morley told me the will was not probated. TRANSCRIPTION OF WILL OF ABRAHAM CROSWHIT: [top cut off] [twenty] sixth day of December, 180l. I Abraham Croswhit of Green County and State of Tennessee being low of body but in perfect mind and of a good memory do ordain this my last will and testament witch is as follows. Item, it is my will that John Slaughter be paid one dolar out of my estate. Item, I do make and ordain my beloved wife and Joseph Porter and John Carder to be my sole executors. This I declere to be my last will disanulling all other wills and [cut off here] hand and seal this day and date. Abraham Croswhit teste Samuel Gragg Joseph Porter Elizabeth Porter ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Mrs. Morley sent me the information below regarding Abraham and George Crosswhite: Feburary 25, 1794 (From Carter County, TN Court Records) "Ordered by the Court that Benjamin Culbertson, John Stone, Wm. His mother Eliza E. Crosswhite raised him by herself with much love from all the townspeople. As a matter of fact, they had a very nice little home with some acreage on a knoll overlooking Mountain City, I believe it was on the eastern side and was adjacent to a brook and the water supply for the community. At the age of 6, 1934, we visited the home site, and met many of dad's cousins, but no Crosswhites. I really would like to get in touch with your friend, Bettye Morley, perhaps she could find some info at the clerks office.. Dad was born May 6th, 1996./ Just found in a pile of books last night, a friendship book belonging to Eliza with many names of her friends and cousins.. William A. Crosswhite signed March 5,1889 cousin Alice Donnelly " Feb. 14, 1889 cousin Mary Lyon, Milligan " May 8, 1893 friend E.E. Parry " Feb. 28 1889 cousin Edwin J. Johnson " Aril 4 1889 friend Eb. Lewis " May 6 1894 friend So, until I find the missing link, I just better cool it.. thanks again,, Joe

    3. The list will be unattended for about a week, so I hope all goes well. Maybe when I get back I'll get more accomplished than I have in the past month. Unfortunately, this will not be a fun trip, but am hoping to intersperse nursing home visits in northern VA with a small bit of research for my husband's immigrant group (definitely different from my old line KY/VA research). Also when I get back I'll need to get my computer fixed, and upgraded to Widows95 which I've been stalling on, so I may need help from you guys in more ways than one. In the meantime, keep up the good work. Jo

    3. > We followed your directions for subscribing to > CROSTHWAITE-L-request@rootsweb.com but have received no messages other > than something you sent to us yourself separately. So we repeated the > directions again to subscribe. Let us know if this has been successful. The message I got from the server was that the initial attempt was unsuccessful. I think the reason this and some others have had a problem is leaving something in the subject line. When subscribing or unsubscribing the software does not take kindly to a "re" or RE in the subject line. Either leave it totally blank or put a period (.) on the line if your software - such as AOL - won't allow you to send out a blank line. For those of you expecting instant replies, but signed up for the digest mode, you will need to unsubscribe to Crosthwaite-D and then subscribe to Crosthwaite-L You cannot be subscribed to both at the same time. Until the list gets larger or busier I suspect we won't need the digest mode. If someone needs to have this changed let me know. It may have been a mistaken subscription in the first place. When you hit "REPLY" the message will go to the individual who sent the message, NOT to the List. If you want the message to go to the list you will need to copy the list name into the address or "to" space - Crosthwaite-L@rootsweb.com There are pros and cons to this, and I've been on both kinds of lists. If you think the answer (or question) is important to a lot of people, and of value for the archived lists, please send the message to the entire list. Perhaps the list was set up for automatic reply to the initial sender was to cut down on accidental personal messages being wafted through the universe, causing embarrassment or irritation. If/when I get messages that I think apply to the entire group I will send them on to the list. I hope the rest of you will keep us in mind if you also get information that might help the rest of us. I can usually be reached at either of my mailing addresses throughout the day, because I check into each one alternately. However, I'll be gone Oct. 1-6, so let's try to get this list going well before then. I might be helpful to send to the list a short lineage of the names you have documented, or are working on. Don't forget to include occasionally. Then others might be able to help, or at least know where you fit it. Other articles deal with 1) Genealogical Corrections on the Descendants of William Crosthwait (1724-1771) and His Wife Milley, --------------------- I've received several recent e-mail messages regarding Milley - One mentioned her as a charter member of the Busch Colony Church in Kentucky - although she was not a land owner - the supposition was that she had accompanied a daughter to the area. Does anyone know who that daughter was? Another message mentioned records of William Golding, father of Milley Golding Crosthwait in VA, while one of the people on this list suggested that Milley's name was Jackson. Does anyone have the straight skivvy on this? I'm willing to put up more documentation on the Internet if anyone has something that is either uncopyrighted, or for which you own the copyright. Until then, I already have mounted some wills and misc. data pertaining to my own line. Check out http://www.netcom.com/~jog1/index.html which lists a lot of One Name/Surname studies - including Crosthwaite. They are mixed into my line at several points, by blood line as well as by marriage, so I have a gedcom mounted that you might also like to check out. If other members of the list have pages on the Internet tell us the addresses so we can visit. Jo Thiessen jogt@aol.com or jog1@ix.netcom.com

    3. PUBLICATION OF CROSTHWAITE CHRONICLE NUMBER 6 (PAGES 261-296). The Crosthwaite Chronicle began publication in October, 1957 with the issue of pages 1-28 under the editorship of Georgia Crosthwaite, Hasel Crosswait Vail and Irma Mildred Crosswait Stillman, all descendants of Abraham Crosweight/Croswhite (1726-1802) and his wife Mary Taylor. The journal is devoted to genealogy and other items of interest concerning the family Crosthwaite/Crosswhite/Croswait and similar spellings. Until recently the latest issue was Number 5 (pages 200-260) edited by Alwilda Crosthwaite, Elizabeth Crosthwaite and Irma Mildred Crosswait Stillman. Now Number 6 (pages 261-196) has been published by Frank S. Crosswhite (also a descendant of Abraham and Mary) and his wife Carol D. Crosswhite. Number 6 is dedicated to John Franklin Crosswhite (1903-1993) and his wife Mary Hazel Clawson (1906-1991), with a two-page biographical sketch on them. Other articles deal with 1) Genealogical Corrections on the Descendants of William Crosthwait (1724-1771) and His Wife Milley, 2) Philip Crosthwaite (1825-1903), the Shanghaied Scholar from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, Who Became Sheriff of San Diego County, California and Then the Mexican Caballero Patriarch of a Baja California Family, and 3) The Romney Family of Utah and Chihuahua, Mexico -- Descendants of a Long Line of Crosthwaites. Features in Number 6 which will be common to futures issues are: 1) Descendants Searching for Lost Ancestors, 2) Ancestors Searching for Lost Descendants, 3) Tell It Again, Grandpa, featuring stories by or about family members, 4) Faith of Our Fathers, dealing with church history in relation to members of the family. Also included are articles concerning news from present-day branches of the family. All persons interested in the family are invited to send material in for publication. Photos are published in either black-and-white or color. Cost is $2.95 per issue but this goes down to $2.50 if a person subscribes to four issues. Subscriptions or material for publication should be sent to Frank S. Crosswhite and Carol D. Crosswhite, 37599 Hwy. 60, Superior, AZ 85273. Questions, inquiries or material for publication can be sent to xthwait@juno.com. It is not necessary to subscribe in order to send in material for publication. If there are a number of family members in a particular area, they could request a local library to subscribe for all to use.

    3. From Burt Crosswhite: Dear Jo, I am thrilled beyond belief (and a lot of flashy adjectives could be added here) to tell you that last Saturday I received my copy of Volume six of the "Crosthwaite Chronicle" in the mail. I sense you will be pleased with the result. After a 34 year absence of new editions of the "Chronicle", Frank and Carol Crosswhite (both Ph.D.'s) of Superior, Arizona have risen to the challenge and published this volume and promise future volumes just as exciting. They also imply that volumes one through five will be reprinted and made available to those who do not have copies. The new edition looks like, feels like, and reads much like the editions published by Georgia, Elizabeth, and Alwilda Crosthwaite. The basic difference is that the new edition is in 8 1/2 X 11 format and includes color photographs and graphics. Volume six begins with page 261, and I think that is a nice touch. Frank and Carol are calling for information to be published in future issues. I hope you will consider purchasing at least one copy (and perhaps subscribe if you like it). The price for one issue is $2.95 and $10.00 for four issues, which can be a combination of future issues or back issues. I don't know how the price compares to the $1.00 per issue back in 1963, but it seems to be a bargain price to me, and I wonder how they can publish it for price. --------------------------------------------------//////////////////// Their address is: Frank S. and Carol D. Crosswhite 37599 Highway 60 Superior, AZ 85273 e-mail address: xthwait@juno.com They are requesting: "No telephone calls please." (Since they both have "day jobs" I do hope this request will be honored.)
