    3. Burt: Boy, here I am redfaced again. I can't seem to keep things sorted out. You asked for knowledge of a Bible and I had none, however, going through papers sent to me on my Franklin/Glanville line by Dorothy (Porter) Mead I find: "(Found in Tilthia C. Franklin's Bible- Printed by Mathew Carey 1813 - Says Bible belonging to William Crosswhite)". Now why I'm red faced, I have no idea if I have passed along this info to you or the list before. This is what is typed below the above quote: "William Crosswhite (His Bible) Robert Crosswhite born May 13 Golden Crosswhite November 18, 1804 January the 27th, 1831, that was the day our father left us Elizabeth Crosswhite was born the (father left us Jan. 27, 1831" below that is a typed list of Franklin births. I have tried to call Dorothy today to find out if she know who now has the "Bible". She is a very busy lady and I have written and asked her the question before and I know she'll answer when she get time, but now I am anxious so I will keep calling 'til I get her. Forever searchin' Kathy Wells

    3. WASHINGTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA CROSSWHITES We have traced the ancestry of the Washington County, Virginia Crosswhites back from the 1850's to Stokes County, North Carolina and from there to Culpepper County, Virginia in the 1700's. We haven't gone forward much past 1850. However, we do have a note to add to the statement that Robert Crosswhite and his wife Nancy had children Sarah (age 22), Golden (age 19) and Francis (age 25), as indicated in the 1850 census of Washington County, Virginia. Robert and Nancy are in Dwelling No. 274 on page 87 of the original 1850 census. Four houses away, in Dwelling No. 270 on page 86, in the household of William Roberts, is another son of Robert and Nancy named Jacob Crosswhite. Robert Crosswhite married Anna Stultz in Stokes County, North Carolina, bond dated March 9, 1816. "Nancy" is officially a diminutive of Anna and it is generally accepted that Nancy in the 1850 census of Washington County is this same Anna. Stultz sounds more German than Cherokee. It is important to differentiate Robert's son Golding ("Golden") from his brother Golding, which has also been found spelled "Golden." His brother Golding married Anna Pinnigar and his son Golding married Elizabeth Hockett. Elizabeth Crosswhite (the younger Golden's wife) was heir of Isaac Hockett by his will dated June 28, 1882 in Washington County Will Book 21, page 130. The tombstone of the younger Golden reads 1 April 1833 - 6 March 1914. The stone of his wife Elizabeth [Hockett] Crosswhite reads 15 April 1836 - 16 January 1904. Robert's brother Golding did not remain in Stokes County, North Carolina. He is found in the 1840 census of Hardin County, Tennessee with nine persons in his household. Golding and its nickname "Golden" are very common names in this line, including that branch which settled in Morgan County, Missouri. This is because the matriarch of the line was Milley Golding who married William Crosthwait/Crosswhite. One wonders if Samuel G. Crosswhite's middle name was Golding. We will look forward to hearing more about Samuel G. Crosswhite and his descendants. Sorry we can't add anything further now. We have an article on the William Crosthwait/Milley Golding line which we will send anyone interested by U. S. Mail for free. Frank S. Crosswhite and Carol D. 2. Burt Crosswhite
    3. In my previous note I listed the wife of Golden Crosswhite as Anna Pinnigar. They married on September 09, 1832 in Stokes Co., NC. this Golden was born about 1804. I copied the following from Andrew Thomas' list which is linked to the Washington Co., VA GenWeb page. http://www.claynet.com/athomas/crosswhi/i0034790.htm#i34790 Golden Crosswhite married Elizabeth Hockett. Elizabeth was born in VA, US April 15, 1836. Elizabeth(10) was the daughter of Isaac Hockett and Eliza Arnett. Elizabeth died January 16, 1904 at 67 years of age. Golden Crosswhite and Elizabeth Hockett had the following child: 9 i. William4 Crosswhite(11). He married Rachel Little May 4, 1882. Rachel was born April 3, 1866. Rachel(12) was the daughter of Alexander Little and Mary Ann "Polly" Helton. At this point, I don't know if this Golden is the son of the former Golden Crosswhite who married Anna Pinnigar. Burt

    3. Sandy, your note below: It is almost a certainty the William, Golden, Robert, etc., listed in Jack's note are the descendents of William Crosthwait and Milley Golding...Their son William had a son Robert who married Anna Stultz and Robert's brother Golden married Anna Pinnigar. Your Samuel Crosswhite researcher, Jack Crosswhite, is on the right track in Washington County, VA. I believe at least Robert and Golden are buried in Washington County, VA... I believe Dr. Frank S. Crosswhite told me that. Please have your correspondent contact me and I will share what I know about this particular family. 3. Recently found another Crosswhite researcher and this is what he has on his family. Maybe someone out there can give us a clue to how these fit into the N.C. Crosswhites that we know about. This is from Jack Crosswhite: Sandy, my grandfathers name was Samuel G. Crosswhite, born in Washington, Co. Va. around 1876. I haven't been able to find the name of his father or mother, however I have just started the search. In the Virginia 1880 census there is the Golden Crosswhite family. Goden is listed as age 47 with birth place as North Carolina wife, Elizabeth, age 45, and born in Virginia. Children listed as being born in Virginia are as follows: William, age 21; Robert, age 15; Milton, age 14; Rachel, age 12; Augustus, age 7; Lucy, age 5; Kate, age 3; and Emma, one month. Information that I have from another source, is that Golden's father is Robert Crosswhite, born about 1790 and that Roberts wife is Cherokee Indian named Annia (although the census of 1850 lists her as "Nancy"). Their three children are: Sarah, age 22; Golden age 19; and Francis, age 25. Francis is a male. Robert moved from Surry County, N.C. to Washington Co. VA. He gave me the name of his source but the aol.com address is not longer a working e-mail address and have been unable to contact his source. I have written him to see if he has another address for him. Sandy Stith

    3. becca Jane Donnelly Rebecca Jane Crosswhite Obituary Rebecca Jane Crosswhite, whose maiden name was Donnelly, was born near Mountain City, Tenn., October 2nd, 1829, and departed this life from her home in Mountain City, April 12, 1909, aged 79 years, 6 months and 10 days. She was married to T.J. Crosswhite October 27, 1851. Of this union 7 children were born. Two of these died when very young and one son died after reaching maturity. The longevity of the family of which she was a member, has been somewhat unusual as of the seven children, not one was taken until he was of 65 years of age, while three brothers, W.K. Donnelly and J.C Donnelly of Mountain City, and R.H.M. Donnelly of Chuckey, Tenn., are still living at advanced ages. She was converted and joined the Christian church in early womanhood and lived a faithful and devoted Christian until the end of earth's pilgrimage. Religion to her was real and her Christ at times very near. She was at times real demonstrative and often in the quiet hours of domestic duties would shout aloud the praises of her Lord. She was especially fond of the rich melody and sensible theology of some of the older songs of Zion. In the flesh she suffered much. But being unable to walk for the last 13 years of her life, she did not murmur nor complain, but at times expressed a desire to go to the higher worlds of which she had long had such bright anticipations. She was for 58 years a devoted wife and the children will ever remember her as a gentle, kind, and loveing mother. The funeral was conducted from the late home April 14th by the writer, assisted by J.K. Wilson, Esq. Some of her favorite songs were sung and the body was tenderly laid away in the beautiful cemetary in Mountain City to await the resurrection of the just. Upon the bereaved and aged husband who walks for the present amid the shadows of earth; the brothers who are also looking toward the opening doors of the world to come and the children we pray that heaven's choice blessings may ever rest and that some bright day earth's sorrows over we may meet all the blood-washed of the other side. 3. WORLEY TAYLOR CROSSWHITE Joseph Turney Crosswhite, Jr. recently posted births of a number of Crosswhites, including Worley T. Crosswhite, born June 22, 1880 at Mountain City [Johnson County], Tennessee. We recalled a tombstone for Worley Taylor Crosswhite in East Hill Cemetery in Washington County, Virginia. From the stones in this cemetery it would appear that Worley Taylor Crosswhite married Lelia Warren and that they had children Warren Fuller Crosswhite, Hazel Clay Crosswhite, Worley Taylor Crosswhite, Jr. and Alfred P. Crosswhite. Data on the stones is as follows: Worley Taylor Crosswhite, June 22, 1880 - November 5, 1947. WOW and VFW. Lelia Warren Crosswhite, March 18, 1877 - June 10, 1957. Ladies Auxiliary, VFW. Warren Fuller Crosswhite, November 19, 1908 - March 26, 1916. Hazel Clay Crosswhite, October 1, 1914 - May 4, 1926. Worley Taylor Crosswhite, Jr., March 16, 1916 - April 3, 1916. Second Lieutenant Alfred P. Crosswhite, 0-789797, born April 7, 1917, killed in action December 15, 1972. Buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, grave 361-361A-361B Section 79, St. Louis, Missouri. We have a faint memory that the local VFW there may be called the Worley Taylor Crosswhite Post. Is this memory true? The gravestone reads WOW and VFW which would indicate that Worley Taylor Crosswhite was a member of Woodmen of the World and Veteran of Foreign Wars. Frank S. 3. Just got this article from Stokes Co. NC Library. I don't know if you have this info or not. JOHN MC CLELLAN CROSSWHITE My first knowledge of Moniteau County came to me at a very early time in my life. As a child my mother would tell me and my brother and sisters stories about her childhood days as they grew up on her grandparents farm. The farm was located in the vicinty of Versailles. My mother, Myram Beatrice (Crosswhite) Rainey now resides in Portland, Oregon. Her parents were Henry Clay Crosswhite, born May 13, 1877 at Versailles and Laura May Williams, born April 3, 1885 in Versailles. After their marriage on October 1, 1899 they made their home on the farm belonging to Henry Clay's father and mother. His parents were John McClellan Crosswhite and Elizabeth Ann (Ross) Crosswhite. Henry Clay was the second child of three children born to John and Elizabeth. Lucy (Crosswhite) Karr, the first child, was born on January 1, 1874. There was another daughter, Birdie Pearl, and she was born on December 22, 1884 and died at the age of four. Henry clay had a sister, Ina May, and a brother, Perry, born to Elizabeth Ann during her first marriage to James Crosswhite, John's older brother. James died shortly after these two were born. John's parents came from Stokes County, North Carolina between 1835 and 1840, settling in Morgan County, Missouri. They were William Crosswhite, Jr. and Elizabeth Pinnegar. William Crosswhite, Sr. also came with them John was the youngest of six children. John was born on July 29th, 1848. He was born in Morgan County, Missouri. "Uncle John and Aunt Ann" as they were known by most people in Moniteau County, lost their first home by fire and later built the home that my mother was to live in. After Elizabeth passed away on January 11, 1925, John stayed on until he couldn't take care of himself and then went to live with his daughter, Lucy. He died on December 13, 1934. He was buried at Hopewell Cemetery in Morgan County. Elizabeth was buried at Hopewell Cemetery. Henry Clay and his wife, Lora May, had four children. Dulcie Cecil, Lola Fern, my mother, Myram Beatrice, and John Clay. With the exception of my mother, all were born on the farm in Moniteau County. My mother was born in Oklahoma since her father had gone there to work in the oil fields for a short time. Henry Clay was well known in Moniteau county, especially for his fiddle playing. He won a contest, and played for many Square Dances. His son, John, used to play with his dad too. My mother is the only living member of her family now. Her sister, Dulcie, died at four and her sister, Lola Fern, died in 1930. John passed away in 1968 in Fresno, CA. Even though many years have now passed since those days of my mother's childhood days in Moniteau County, the memories still linger on. Submitted by: Helen D. Vittoria, 2302 S.E. 76th, Portland, Oregon 97215 This came from Moniteau County, Missouri Family History Book, Page 171 Here's a will from Stokes County, North Carolina Wills 1790-1864 page 33. 5 April 1819. 3. In the 1880 census of Laurel Creek Township, Watauga County, NC appears Abraham L. Crosswhite and his wife Barbara E. Crosswhite on Page 9, Supervisor's Dist. No. 4, Enumeration Dist. No. 199. Abraham and Barbara were my gt. grandparents. They died 45 and 54 years, respectively, before I was born. Abraham L. Crosswhite was the son of John Melvin Crosswhite and Elizabeth Stone. Barbara E. Lewis was the 2nd wife of Abraham L. Crosswhite and was the daughter of Gideon Lewis,III and Lucinda McQueen. In this census, Abraham is listed as a Physician and the following children are listed: Sarah M. (Sarah Margaret) Daughter, age 20 (Daughter of Margaret McCall) Ella (Matilda Elizabeth) Daughter, age 4 Elsa D. (Elsa Delna) Daughter, age 2 Nora B. (Nora Belle) Daughter, age 1 Clemming W. Orphan, age 6 Abraham and Barbara's son, Charles Q. Crosswhite (my grandfather), was not born until March 1883. Clemming W.'s place of birth is listed as TN, as is the place of birth of his unknown parents. To be sure, "Clemming" is an unusual name. Trying to interpret some of these old documents isn't always easy, but "Clemming" is what it appears to me to be. My question is about Clemming W. Crosswhite (Crosswhite is assumed, because the boy's surname was not otherwise listed). This is the only reference I have ever seen regarding this person. Who was Clemming W. Crosswhite? What happened to him? Can anyone help? Burt Crosswhite McAlester, OK

    3. I just looked at the transcribed and published census for Watauga Co., NC, Laurel Creek 1880 and the child you have as Clemming W. age 6, orphan was transcribed as: Clemmons, M., 6, male, orphan, with Clemmons/Clemming being the last name. Maybe Clemming/Clemmons was his last name. Something like this is always open to interpretation and warrants double checking. When I abstracted and published the 1880 Ashe Co., NC census, try as hard as I could to be accurate, I'm still making corrections in my copy and at the same time I've heard from people who solved a problem where our interpretations differed. Were Abraham and Barbara living in Watuga in 1900? I don't see them in Watauga Co. nor do I find a Clemming/Clemmons. Carol Crosswhite's post yesterday was wonderful. Great information - Thanks Carol. I'm really enjoying the Crosswhite postings. 2. Mary Floy, & Burt, et als Thank you Mary, for the census review you sent me(by Tom Gentry whose name was mentined sometime back by my father) The information really shows me what I perceived earlier, at least it infers that Sam T. And Joe F.(T.) were being raised under the roof of Thos J. And Rebecca J. as GS, which I assume would mean God Sons. After thei demise, Joe T. was raised by Eliza Eveline Crosswhite. In what capacity, I cannot tell by what I now know. Census 1900 Sam T. 15; Joe F.(T.) 4 Census 1910 Sam T. 25; Joe T. 14 Census 1920 Eliza was 57, and listed widowed (& alone) My father, Joseph T. Crosswhite moved to Norfolk, Virginia circa 1916, he later married my mother, Elzabeth Ann Phillips, on April 24, 1926. He passed away in November, 1978. I am almost certain that, Worley T., Willie P. and Sam T. were brothers and sister/ it was also my opinion that my father was their brother, but have no basis for that, other than as a boy, I always referred to him, as my Uncle Sam, and was never corrected. Sam T. Crosswhite, his wife Stella, and their children lived in Norfolk, Virginia throughout his later years. Family Bible, indicates that Nancy Loretta Crosswhite (Retta aka Rettie) married D.M. Fritts, September 9, 1913... / also Mary, I have the obituary For Rebecca Jane Crosswhite, April 12, 1909; written by G.W. Paul, and J.K. Wilson, esq. thanks again for your patience in this.. cousin, joe, thrice removed(whatever) sam T.

    3. Hi Crosswhite Cousins, I'm not an expert on the Crosswhites, but my greatgrandfather was James Carter Donnelly, youngest brother of Rebecca Jane Donnelly Crosswhite. Out of curiosity, I looked at Tom Gentry's abstract of the the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census. You all probably have this, so I apologize for the repetition. 1900, District 2, Johnson Co., TN #239 - Crosswhite, Thomas J., 73 b. TN father b. TN mother b. TN Rebecca J.70 wife TN TN TN (Rebecca's father, William Donnelly b. VA) Rettie, 39 dau TN TN TN Eliza E., 37 dau TN TN TN Sam T., 15 GS TN TN TN Joe F., 4 GS TN TN TN 1910 - Town of Mountain City, Johnson Co., TN #83 - Crosswhite, Thomas J., 83 TN TN TN Eliza, 47 dau TN TN TN Loretta, 49 dau TN TN TN Samuel T., 25 GS TN TN TN Joseph T., 14 GS TN TN TN 1920 - Town of Mountain City, Johnson Co., TN #158 - Crosswhite, Eliza, 57, widow TN TN TN (she was listed alone) No Joseph Crosswhite, but Samuel T. Crosswhite, 34, listed as head of household with wife named Stella M., 23 and children, Shelton J., 3 8/12 and Charlotte M., 1 3/12. He was listed next to Thomas and Florence Crosswhite. Where did Joseph T. Crosswhite go?? Does anyone have his death certificate? It might not state who his father was, but it should give his mother's name. When the abstracts of the 1900 and 1910 census' was done, several important columns were left out as far as I'm concerned. One was how long husband and wife had been married and the other how many children each woman had (married or not) and how many were still living. Sure wish that same question had been asked of the men, but guess its logical a woman would know how many children she bore, but might be more difficult for a man to know how many children he fathered. <G> Another question asked on the 1910 census was how many times people had been married and how long they were married this marriage. This is invaluable, too. Don't remember if these same questions were asked in the 1920 census. If any of you have easy access to the microfilm of these census', I'd suggest you look at them and see if Loretta or Eliza Crosswhite are listed as mothers and how many children she bore and how many were still living. While in the mood, I looked at marriages and see Retta Crosswhite md. D.M. Fritts, 7 Sep 1913. The 1920 census 2nd District shows Marion Fritts, 75 and wife Retta, 59. I found no marriages for Eliza Crosswhite. At 03:07 PM 11/29/97 -0800, Crowhite@aol.com wrote: > Burt, you have started something with this poor old soul>.
