This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Bowlerfamily Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.cronk/222.6.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Cronk mess... Abraham was born 1741 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, NY, to Thuenis Cronk/etc, per Dutch church records. John Cronk, father of Hannah Cronk, was born in 1743, possibly in Cortlandt, Westchester, NY. There is record of his marriage to Martha Chatterton in Cortlandt. There is also record of John Cronk being "warned out of town", after the Revolutionary war. His name appears on a list of people who were basically kicked out for taking the wrong side in the war. There is record of him being given land in Canada - land that was given to UELs. There is record of him in the early Canadian census. Since John was born in 1743, he cannot possibly be the son of Abraham, born 1741. However, since they were both from the same general area of new York, it is likely they are related. To clarify or explain one possible cause for confusion, It appears that Abraham did have a son (around 1761?) named John, however he was not the father of Hannah. Yes,there are a lot of repeating names in the family, which can cause a lot of confusion. A person needs to look at the birth and death dates carefully, not only on the person, but the rest of the family, parents, siblings, spouse and children and see if things fit. If there is anyone with more information on the Cronk line back in the early to mid 1700's please post it and of course cite your sources, so that we can all work together to straighten out this mess.
