My grandmother was a Cronk but of the Mountain Grove, Ontario area....still planning to go back to Canada for more research (probably next year). The further I go back the names are more common like you have found out, it gets rather confusing. Julie Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: cronk_samuel Surnames: Cronk, Dingman, Oliver, Docherty Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.cronk/549/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Does anyone have info on this couple? I find them on the 1851 Northumberland census both age 60 & with them are Matthias b 1841, Jeffrey James, b 1844, and Byron b 1846. They are listed as Cronk but seem to be Dingmans as it appears their mother Diantha died. Also, on this census with them is Hannah Oliver b 1808 single(Probably to help with children). I found the other 2 siblings, Elsie and Emily living with an older Dingman couple. On 1861 census the boys are still with Samuel & Catharine and in addition Sarah Docherty Widow, age 24 with Sophronia 7, Wm H. 2 yrs and Abraham Cronk widowed b. 1790. All born USA. On 1871 census Jeffrey James and spouse are with them and JJ is using Dingman as surname. Is this Samuel possibly the Son of Abraham/Kail? There is another Samuel close in age that some say is son of John and Martha Chatterton. Is Catharine a Dingman? Is Sarah Docherty a daughter of Samuel and Catharine? Any help would be appreciated. Author: cronk_samuel Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.cronk/548.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: yes, I googled it too. It has several definitions as a noun including working the land, or working for a large estate but as an adjective it speaks of conduct in a loyal manner. I was just wondering why a census taker would say farmer for occupation in most cases and yeoman for others. That is why I was wondering if yeoman and loyalist were related. Or maybe they were caretakers for larger farms. Maybe it was a silly question. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. Court Conkwright
    3. You are welcome Nancy.............the thing we miss the most when dealing with the Dutch spellings is the changes from Cronk or Conk to you name it. You just can't look at one spelling when dealing with this line. I don't care what site you check you may find one of our lines on 2 or 3 difference sites. You just need the one big clue. It took me 19 years to finally figure out how I connected and I had the key to the puzzle in the McKenzie Papers and just couldn't figure how to play the pieces because of the change from the 9th to the 7th generation and the 6th generation I knew about. The main thing is to remember, DON'T TRUST THE SPELLING! Check them all and look at all spellings. That is why I posted the difference spelling in my name to show you what I had to go thru to figure it out.............good luck on your search..............!
