    3. NEWS AND NOTES FROM ROOTSWEB THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS (by Ellen Seebacher and Tim Pierce). On Saturday, we lost lists.rootsweb.com -- one of RootsWeb's two main mailing list servers -- when it was penetrated by a cracker. We were cracked through the inattentiveness of a user with privileged access to the machine, and will be more careful about granting direct access to RootsWeb servers in future. There is no sensitive or private data on this machine, only mailing list archives, so no one's privacy was compromised. However, the individual who entered the system wiped out two directories essential to running the machine ("/etc" and "/var/log"), which meant that to make the machine usable again we'd need to reinstall part of it from scratch. Brian Leverich worked through the weekend to rebuild the server and reinstall the operating system, but the process did not go smoothly; mysterious hardware troubles kept cropping up. While wrestling with these problems he decided to use the "down time" to good advantage by replacing the old machine, a Pentium Pro 200 with slow 60-nanosecond EDO memory, with a Pentium II 400 with fast 6-nanosecond SDRAM memory, estimated to improve performance by a factor of 2-6. Dr. Leverich assembled the new server over Saturday night and Sunday. On Monday, Tim Pierce and Randy Winch went over the operating system painstakingly, file by file, to ensure that the intruder left behind no back doors or Trojan horses. On Monday night, Tim and Karen Isaacson rebuilt the missing /etc directory, from memory and a little detective work. By late Monday night, the new server had begun processing the backlogged mail that had accumulated over the weekend. Fortunately, the extra work on the new server paid off: the megabytes of backed-up mail that would have taken the old machine days to process were finished off by the new system in about 12 hours. So although our down time was about a day and a half longer than we expected, the result is a RootsWeb that's faster, more efficient and better equipped to serve the needs of Internet genealogists. Thanks to all for your patience while we recovered from this disaster. We are especially grateful to RootsWeb's Members, Sponsors, Donors, and Patrons, who have collectively made it possible for us not only to repair the crippled operating system, but also to increase the server's capacity so everyone benefits.

    1. [CRONK-L] Information about Henry H. Cronkhite
    2. Darryl G. Adams
    3. I have hit a brick wall in finding the ancestors of Henry H. Cronkhite. I think he moved to Lake County IL from Herkimer County, NY in 1845. I looked on Ancestry World Tree and found a Henry H. Cronkhite, s/o Isaac Cronkhite b abt 1799, but cannot confirm. In a book on the History of Herkimer County NY, there is information on Henry C. Cronkhite and his ancestor Cornelius. No mention of Henry H. Perhaps I am missing one generation somewhere. Cornelius moved to Herkimer County in 1786. he had six children, three sons and three daughters. One son was Henry C. and he was drafted into the War of 1812, which would make him too old to be a sibling of Henry H, but perhaps his father? Any information would be helpful. Thanks Darryl G. Adams

    3. After reviewing the MacKenzie Papers and various other documents including a will for Henry Cronk, I would like some input on the information I have collected. I find Henry (218), son of Hendrick and Mary (141) marrying Hannah Sherwood in 1788. Hendrick also had a son named Robert. There is a will for Henry Cronk in 1815 in the 8th Ward of New York City. (The book of Wills of New York by Early 974.41 a4w) His will does not list any names of his children or his wife, but it does list his brothers-in-law as Jeremiah Shearwood and Caleb Shearwood. Also there is a death of Henry Cronk 22 Jun 1816 age 55 years 1 Month 8 Days at the ethodist Church Yard, Underhill Street, Tuckahoe, NY. Who is this Henry? I believe Henry Cronk and Hannah Sherwood are probably the parents of my ggg grandmother Francis (Fanny) Cronk born about 1802. Fanny named her four children Mary, Henry, Robert and Catherine. Too many names the same to not take a serious look. Can anyone help me with this problem--either proof or disproof? julee [email protected]

    3. I know my Francis (Fanny) Cronk is born in Westchester, NY abt 1801. I do not know who her parents are. I have decided that I am going to have to try tracking her from the opposite direction. I know that there are several Cronk families in the NY area. I am especially interested in the family of Henry CRONK who married Hanna SHERWOOD abt 1788. They had several children: Henry James Robert Johann Fanny I would REALLY appreciate any information on the descendents of Cronk families of the late 1700's so that I can start eliminating lines that are definately not mine and perhaps find some "Maybe" lines in the process. I think the possibility of my Fanny descending from this family is very good as she named her two sons Robert and Henry. I will gladly pay for copies and postage to receive any and all information available. Desperately waiting, Julee ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
