Over the years, some of the family changed the surname to Cronk, one line changed to Kronk, and another to Crunk. A cousin who lives in Germany has researched the family and has not found any indication of a Jewish connection. I would be interested in hearing from from you as we have a DNA project going for the Cronk, Kronk, Krank Kranck surname. My g-grandfather was Walter Dingman, his parents were Hezekiah Dingman and Samantha Phillips, Samantha's parents were Christopher Phillips and Sarah Cronk. A letter I have states: Hezekiah DINGMAN He was raised by aunt Ann DINGMAN OLIVER. He married John CRONK's niece, Symanthe, who may have been the daughter of John CRONK's sister. Her children included: A daughter who married John WEAVER; Burt who lived in Washington; Nicholas who lived in Northern Michigan; Charles who died out in New Mexico; Walter who lived at Marion, Michigan; and Harriet who was a widow living at Battle Creek, Michigan. Both Hezekiah and his wife died at Marion, Michigan. Hezekiah's parents were Nicholas Dingman and Margaret "Peggy" Woodcock I would like you to consider maybe working together (if you are willing) to solve this mystery. It is my roadblock. Please contact me direct at vickih20317@yahoo.com I will look forward to corresponding with you. Vicki Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JasonGilmore411 Surnames: Cronk, Woodcock, Dingman Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.cronk/222.5.2.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This may be old news - be careful about researching the Cronk name in Northumberland County and the Cronk name in nearby Sophiasburg County. They were both settled there by fellows named Abraham Cronk, but they are two different Abrahams. The Sophiasburg one had adult sons when he came in 1786, and for the most part, the generations stayed in the Prince Edward County area for quite a while. The other Cronks, from which I am descended, settled in both Fredericksburg Twp and Percy/Cramahe Township in the early 1790s and had mostly young children when they came from Caughnawaga NY. Where am I going? The Northumberland Abraham had a son named John Cronk (b. abt 1885) who married a Hannah Peterson, and had at least one child Jacob. Abraham also had male children named Abraham (b. 1781), Jacob (b 1796), Samuel (b. 1791) and Nicholas (b 1800). At least one daughter Mary too. Most of this family and their offspring stayed in the Northumberland COunty area, and, having come to Canada with the likes of the Dingman and Woodcock clans, often married members of these families. So if you're finding a Cronk married to a Dingman or Woodcock, you're likely related to me. Please drop me a note!!! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: pjzee Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.cronk/276.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: my great grandfather John L. Cronk came from Michigan and I am trying to find out more about him. He was born Feb. 21 1827 in New York and died Jan 27 1900 in Burlington Kansas. He had came from montcalm county Michigan His first wife was Emaline Bailey and they had 8 children. Their youngest son was born Smith Abraham Cronk March 17 1864. He had another son with Mary Hines born 1871 Maple valley Twp. Michigan. i hope that gives you a connection to the Michigan Cronks because that is where mine are from also. My grandfather Willis was born in Montcalm county Michigan in 1856 along with his twin Wilson which also died in Burlington Kansas. I have been to Burlington looking for graves and information but I have nothing so far on those two. I do not have a Harriet listed with the line from John L. but I have nothing further back as to his siblings or parents and that is what I need but perhaps this will help you to get to her. Joseph Cronk b. ca. 1818 OH (or PA?), d. ca. 1854 CA, probably at or near Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co. CA and just after his wife's death; he mar. Mary S. Shields b. 30 Apr 1818 PA, d. 1 Dec 1853 CA probably at or near Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co. CA; children as follows: i. Mary (or Mariah) Jane Cronk b. ca. 1838 OH, d. aft. 1925 CA, mar. 1 Dec 1860 Thomas Walker b. 3 Jun 1818 Greenbush, Rensselaer Co. NY, d. 23 Oct 1867 Santa Cruz Co. CA, prominent businessman and rancher of Watsonville (parents unknown); they had 2 ch. James Ford Walker b. 12 Sep 1861 and Thomas C. Walker b. 19 Jan 1865, both b. at Watsonville and d. bef. their mother ii. Ira J. Cronk b. ca. 1840 OH, untraced after 1853 iii. unidentified child b. bef. 1853 (and after 1850?); came with family to CA 1853 but untraced afterward Note: three Cronk children came to CA in 1853; if Ira J. d. in IL between 1850 and this trip, then there may have been a fourth child. Other info: 1850 census of Warren Co. IL, house no. 898: Joseph Cronk 36 OH, Mary 34 OH, Mariah J. 12 OH, Ira J. 10 OH; no. 984 is Moses Romine who married Sarah F. Shields, sister of Mary S. Shields; parents of these sisters are Samuel Shields and Rachael Piper, enumerated at house no. 664 same county. Joseph and Mary Cronk and their ch. moved from Warren Co. IL to CA and apparently arrived ca. Oct 1853. The parents died of California fever 2 months later, and dau. Mary Jane may have been the only survivor of this Cronk family. Other Shields relatives appear to have moved to CA about the same time, specifically John Fenton Shields, a brother of Mary S. Shields. John Fenton Shields became a Mormon, probably in IL, and moved to UT, but several of his oldest children were born in CA, and one of his oldest sons James F. Shields was b. 1850 in Salt Lake City, UT, but died 1859 Watsonville, Santa Cruz Co. CA and is buried on the Thomas Walker ranch. John Fenton Shields was back in UT by 1863. Several of his siblings (all non-Mormon) moved from IL to area of Clarke Co. IA and Jewell Co. KS. The Samuel Shields family moved from Beaver Co. PA across the border to Columbiana Co. OH bef. 1830, and between 1838 and 1850 moved to Warren Co. IL. They may have been acquainted with the Cronk family in PA or OH. I am descended from Rachael G. Shields (b. 5 Feb 1835 OH, another dau. of Samuel Shields and Rachel Piper), who mar. William Wallace Gitchell on 4 Jul 1860 Burlington, Des Moines Co. IA (eloped from Warren Co. IL).
