Six of our seven participants clearly connected - two in Germany and four who live in the States. Descendants of this line today in Germany have the surname "Krank." Those in the States that we know of have surnames "Kronk," "Cronk," and "Crunk." The seventh participant with the "Cronk" surname does not match and he does not know a lot about his family history. So there may be a Dutch connection. Sandy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. It's me again as to where they where born Samuel's parents were Abraham Cronkhite and Martje Caryl they are listed in 1790 living in Caughnawaga, Montgomery, NY. Abraham and his son's came to Canada sometime between 1790-1800. The family also lived in Kinderhook, Dutchess County, the son Abraham was baptized there I think this Abraham requested a land grant in 1797 and was granted one in Percy, Northumberland. Check Bill Martin's website for Cronk records as well as Randy Saylor's site. Good luck. ----Original Message----- From: cronk-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cronk-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, May 12, 2009 3:34 PM To: CRONK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Cronk] samuel cronk parents This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. In the 1891 census Huntingdon Hastings ON, Samuel's parents are stated to have been born in the US. Since Arvilla is born in ON I am not convinced that we are looking at the same Samuel. In searching further, I found on the 1851 Census of Northumberland ON, a 61 year old Samuel b. US abt 1790 married to Chatherine also 61 and also born in the US. Indeed old enough to be the parents of Samuel/Eliza. On that same 1851 cencus, listed as sons of Samuel/Catherine b. in Ont Mattius 10, James 7, Byron 5. I assume they also would have older children. Does anyone know of this Samuel and Catherine and their family? or where in the US they were born? or when they entered Canada? Hi Marie, I don't have a lot of information on this family but I do know the three boys living with them on the 1851 Census are their grandsons, why they listed them as Cronk's I don't know because they are Dingmans: There was a lot of marrying between the Dingman families and the Cronk families or at least this Cronk family. What I have is a letter written by a sister of my g-g-grandfather, the letter makes several references to this branch of the Cronk family: Joseph DINGMAN Married twice. He had three boys by his first wife, Mathias, Jeffery, and Byron. They were brought up by their grandmother, Mrs. Samuel CRONK in Cramma. If you look you will notice when the boys married they used the name Dingman. Everyone has Joseph Dingman marrying a Diantha Blakely, I presume a daughter of Samuel and Catherine, why her name is different I don't know. I hope this helps? This branch is very frustrating, I know from personal experience. ---Original Message----- From: cronk-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:cronk-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, May 12, 2009 3:34 PM To: CRONK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [Cronk] samuel cronk parents This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I have another ancestor who falsified birth dates (actually stole an identity) to serve in the Civil War because he was too young. So that kind of thing did happen and is possible. We knew about it only because the story had been documented and passed down through our family. The limits if this theory are that the date that the military has, 1810, would have only made him older. Typically those older than 45 were not wanted for enlistment. Also, as in the case of my other ancestor, American may have continued using the falsified date in order to receive any military/federal benefits IF he was entitled to any due to his service. So while it at least seems unlikely to me, your theory certainly is possible. Isn't genealogy fun! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The one piece that really strikes me as strange is the 1810 birth year on the grave really doesn't jive with the rest of these...10 to 12 years is fairly significant. And in past online research, there did seem to be at least one other American Cronk. It was common back then to be named after the nation or a person's state. Birthdates and birth places could be the difference of who is giving the information. In the 1850 census he was married to Elizabeth. In the 1860 census he was married to Hester. Then in 1870 he was married to Margaret. So maybe the wives gave the info. Just a thought. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I lean toward her mother being Christine Millious of Lenox, Madison, NY. There was also a William and Margret Millious of Kinderhook, Columbia, NY who purchased land in Madison in 1812 or 1817. They later sold most of the land to Merrit Carpenter, the husband of Cornelia Melius. In 1830s they sold the rest of the lot to the next husband of Cornelia, Simon/Simeon Harp. Harp also owned land in Oswego and possibly Onondaga. My Millis/Millious line has been one hard nut to crack. Nothing seems to definitely connect people who share this name. I suppose I should look for a will in Columbia, NY for William and Margret Millious. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. On the 1800 census they were shown with two daughters and one son. We have never located the second daughter. I have the family history of Elizabeth and my ancestor William Simeon Millious but not of that daughter. No grave found either. If you are not familiar with Henry (Hank) Jones mammoth works, The Palatine Families of New York you might want to check them out. The Millious family was part of the Palatine settlement in Dutchess and Rennselaar counties. There were other Millious families as you have noted in the Onondaga area but I have never connected them all to mine. I have found them in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and many other states. Unfortunately for us they seem to people the earth. Early spellings were Melius,Milges,Miljes and later ones were Millis, Mellis, handwriting could appear as Million.
