    3. Go to Rootsweb.com and type in Walter Cronkite.........you will then see the listing of a few posting of Walter Leland Cronkite line. I wrote Mr. Cronkite many years ago and ask him if he was from the line of Herck. He wrote back and said that his father had done the family history and he was not sure were it was at the moment. At that time I don't believe his line was on Rootsweb.com. It appears that some of the posting are being removed. I tried to open one and it was gone. A couple of years ago I saw a interest article in a Parade magazine. A reporter was on his yacht and ask him why he named it the Wyntje. He told the reporter it was named after a very special person in his life. That was all that was said. Wyntje Quick Theunis was the wife of Herck Syboutsen who came to Long Island, NY or New Amsterdam as it was know then. That was the first clue I had that he was from our line Herck. Then the newspaper yesterday also talked a little about his line settling in New Amsterdam...............so it appears he was very proud of his line and being Dutch. In my last posting, I said that I knew a researcher who has seen 44 spelling of our name..............my spelling is the last on the line of changed that I am aware of.............I have seen a list of maybe 33 changes. my present spelled Conkwright 4 generations it was Conkright 6 generations it was Cronkright 7 generations it was Cronckheit 9 generations it was Krankyhte 10 generations it was Syboutsen So you can see the changed in just my name. It took me sometime to figure this out back in 1980 before the computer and the Internet to find out all the changes. It was all leg work and writing letters. I found the Mackenzie Papers and the Ruth Grant history and both were of great help to me, but I still had to figure out how I connected to this line. It was because of the continued changing of name and the movement of my family from NY to VT to NY to OH to IN to ILL then some to KS. Then others went from OH to MI. In the end it all worked out, but Walter was from the line of Herck that I believed him to be from........he was family to many folks tracing a spelling that was close to all this mess of changes..................! 3. Hi: Just a FYI..........the Dutch changed the name from our forefather Herck Siboutson who landed in New Amsterdam or New York Iong Island about 1642 and one researcher told me that she has seen 44 ways that I am aware of. I have seen over 30. One of them is Cronkright. My spelling was Cronkright from our line out of VT(1785) to NY(1840) then on to Oh(late 1840's). It then was changed once out of VT to Conkright. Then my grandfather added the W in the mid 1800 to Conkwright when in IN. You can't just stick with one spelling of this line, but look at them all................Cronkhite is yet another spelling...........as in Walter Cronkhite. He is from the Herck line also..............I learned this lesson many years ago once I figured out the name spelling problem. There was a reason that the Dutch did this, but all goes back to when the British took New York with firing a shot and that is yet another story. Happy Hunting and Good Luck! 3. Hi Marie, I am not sure who the little girl is who lived in their house, but I do know that on the 1900 census for Hatton twp. Clare County, Michigan the census asked the women how many children they had given birth to and how many were still living, Rosetta's answer to both questions was 0. I don't think the child is theirs who she is and where she belongs, I don't know. Rosetta though was a sister to my g-g-grandfather and I know their father died when they were young and because of it the children were all sent to live with different relatives. So maybe this is Rosetta's way of giving back. I am not sure what you mean by taking a closer look, I have tried to take a close look and I still have more questions than answers. I am researching this same Cronk line, and I could sure use some help. See my great-great-grandfather was Hezekiah Dingman, his wife Samantha Phillips was a neice to John Cronk who married Rosetta Dingman in Northumberland County, I obtained a copy of Samantha's death certificate from the county clerk's office and her parents are listed as Christopher Phillips and Sarah Cronk. Well the John Cronk who married Rosetta Dingman, I obtained his death certificate as well, his parents are listed as John Cronk Sr. and Hannah Oliver. The problem is we have a John Cronk who married Hannah Peterson and settled in Northumberland County. And it is possible it was a mistake because Rosetta's nephew William Cahow was the informant for the death certificate. So I know the Cronk family who lived in Northumberland County were quite involved with the Dingman family and if you have any information about this family I for one sure could use some help. Also Samantha's father Christopher Phillips several of his brothers settled in Northumberland County as well, Abraham born abt 1801, and Ranselser born abt 1814 those two I am sure of but there may have been others. I believe John Cronk who married Hannah, his father to be Abraham Cronkhite and Mary Kerral. I also know that Johannes Dingman and his wife Annatje Dingman (my ancestors)where sponsors for Jan Crankheit and Martha Tetterson daughter Eliezabet on 8-1-1784 in Kinderhook, NY. I do know the Dingman family and the Cronk/Cronkhite family do go back pretty far. If you could help me untangle this mess I for one sure would appreciate it. Hannah and Daniel are my 4x great-grandparents. I too have not found John's parents. I was curious though how Hannah and Daniel fit into your family and how we might be related :-) Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Marie, I have tried to untangle that family as have others before me. If you get anywhere please let me know, I could sure use some help. Of special interest to me John Cronk born abt 1822, found living in 1861 with John Sr. born abt 1786 USA and Hannah born abt 1788 born USA, parents, Also Rosetta born abt 1838 CW. I am also trying to place a Sarah Cronk maybe a sister to John Cronk above born abt 1822 and probably daughter of John and Hannah who married Christopher Phillips and produced my GGGrandmother Samantha born in 1839, called a niece to John Cronk. Who the John and Sarah are I have no idea. I used to think they were just misidentified on the 1851 census, but now I see both families on the 1861 census so that idea is gone. Christopher Phillips has brothers who settled in Northumberland County as well Abraham born abt 1801, Renselser born abt 1814. I have collected quite a bit of Cronk information I have as many baptismal records and marriage records as I can find on that name, in Ontario and NY but I am still at a loss. If I can help let me know.
