Thanks Ian - you may have killed off my grand theory! In the 1851 Census, if I'm not mistaken, James is not a son, but a nephew! In fact, Thomas' wife Elizabeth (Betty) died of TB in 1845 (I have her Death Certificate), so she could not have been his mother, if his age was correct. This lead me to guess that that young boy was one of mine, and would eventually come to Australia (in 1855, with his mother, Mary Crompton). If the same boy shows up in the 1861 Census, as age 12, listed there as a "son" (ie. having been adopted, as it were), then this James isn't mine! -----Original Message----- From: crompton-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:crompton-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of IAN STONE Sent: Monday, 8 June 2009 2:31 am To: crompton@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [CROMPTON] Thomas Doug James is 12 in 1861, this should be right as he is 1 in 1851, 21 in 1871 and 30 in 1881. Hi All Trying to establish some firm facts before going further back. According to my info: PR for St Mary's, Bury shows: B: (ie: bastard) James Bridge, S of Mary Crompton b. 13 Oct 1780, bap. 8 Nov 1780. I had assumed that he was named BRIDGE because that was the father's name. Other bastard births in the same period are recorded under the mother's surname. I think that James m. Mary PILKINGTON on 23/8/1799: PR (p 378), St Mary's, Bury shows: Year 1799, entry 1124. James Bridge of this Parish Calico printer X Batchelor X Mary Pilkington of this Parish, Spinster were Married in this Church, by Licence (?) this 23 Day of Aug in the year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Nine, By me Henry Unsworth A:M:Min: THIS MARRIAGE WAS SOLEMNIZED BETWEEN US Jas Bridge his X Mark Mary PILKINGTON her X Mark IN THE PRESENCE OF Jas (?) Sharples Thos. (?) Crompton (Thos CROMPTON was also a witness in the next marriage (PR 1125) in the register, between Arthur KENYON and Sarah WHITTAKER. He is possibily a 'professional' witness.) As a first step could SKS have a look in C41 to see if there are any likely entries. Their son, Henry BRIDGE, was already married by then and with a quite large family. A main reason for believing that I am on the right lines is that my g-father was forename Pilkington and his first born was forename Crompton. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Ian Thanks a million. I am astounded! Derek Crompton provided the details of the 1861 Census. Thanks Derek! 1861 Census RG09/ 2836_012 page 17 091 Maze Street, Darcy Lever. Can you indicate where they lived? But where did you find the other details, including when he may have died? And you think that he was buried at St Stephens? The children were all christened at St Peters. His wife was Elizabeth (Betty) Crompton formerly Fletcher, died 30jun1845 (I have her Death Certificate). Her death in 1845 means that the John mentioned above (the scholar) cannot be Thomas' son by Betty. In any event, you suggest that Thomas' younger son was a James! Thanks to you both! Doug In 1871 Thomas lived on Higher Darcy Street, Tonge, Bolton. He was described as 'Infirm' in the occupation column. Also his youngest son James is married and living on Manchester Road, Great Lever ( 2 minutes from my house) in 1901 with his wife Isabella and daughter Elizabeth. Darcy Lever is only a small area but well noted and there is only one main church, I think. Hi Have I written you before? My name is Donna Collinge Martens and I have a g-g-g-grandmother Harriet Crompton who was married in 1796 at St. Peter's, Bolton to a John Clough. Harriet had about 7 or 8 children and died I believe in childbirth in 1820. John remarried a Hannah Clarkson and had 3 more children. No one in the family has been able to find out where Harriet Crompton came from. Too bad she didn't come from Samuel Crompton the rich one, though John Clough and his second wife had a Samuel. I know they were married at St Peter's Church, but I believe someone in the family might have been Unitarian. Her first child, a daughter Ann was married to a Parkinson and they are Unitarians.
