    1. [CROMPTON] Crompton, John(1791-1864)
    2. Son of Samuel C.(inventor) Seems I never found out what the title of the booklet was......... from an e=mail 30/12/2002 > Dear Carole, The booklet says that Samuel's son John ran away to sea in > 1809 , was taken prisoner by the French off Bermuda, sent to Cadiz and > repatriated to London from where he walked back to Bolton and was treated > like the Prodigal Son, being given a half share in the running of business > with his brother Samuel and equal responsibility. Samuel Jun quarrelled > with his Father and left the business. Whether its your John I wouldn't > like to say but its a nice story! Regards, Lyn Carole / Lyn ? John did run away to sea for three years, and according to The Life and Times of Samuel Crompton of Hall-in-the-Wood, by Gilbert J. French. (on Google Books) Was shipped wrecked. He landed back at Woolwich. In a distressed state, without money or change of clothes. So the walking back north, sounds possible. The strange thing is that watching them land without knowing it was Samuel Crompton himself. French wrote, nor was it until some months afterwards that father and son discovered how near they had been to each other at a time when mutual recongnition would have been so useful to one and delightful to both. [This was when Samuel was in London, pleading for some cash for developing the Mule spinning technology.] Derek Crompton London south-east no attachments to this e=mail //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// /////////////////////////////////////.

    3. Derek, Which aspect are you following? I understand that after the sinking of HMS Prince of Wales the surviving marines were drafted into a unit of the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders to take part in the defence of Singapore, and were then taken prisoner on the fall of Singapore. They were referred to as the "Plymouth Argyles" as Prince of Wales was a Devonport ship. A few years later I served with a seaman survivor of Prince of Wales who had been drafted to another RN ship in the area. As you are all too aware, the list is down and has been for nearly 2 weeks. I was away all last week and though I had hoped it would be back by my return, I was to be disappointed. The list runs on a server at the University under the control of Phil Stringer. My guess is that he is away on holiday as he cannot be contacted either by e-mail or by his home telephone. I have my fingers crossed that he will get back this next week and all will be well. In the meantime, if you have other list members with whom you are in contact, perhaps you could pass this message on. Thanks for your forbearance. 2. Copy of message from the Bolton list With the List Admin's kind approval I'd just like to let any members of this list who are also subscribed to the MLFHS list know that the MLFHS list went down one week ago on Thursday due to a technical problem. The latest information from Clayton House today is that the problem is being worked on and the list will be restored as soon as possible. The first sign of progress will be that messages will start to appear. Test messages should probably be avoided, please, in the meantime. Parents were Ann or Hannah Crompton nee Farrell, born in Ireland, and Joseph Crompton born in Darcy Lever, Bolton, c 1826. Joseph was a carter (flour) and died in 1885 in an unmarked grave in St Stephen’s, Lever Bridge . I have the parents marriage, but apart from Margaret the marriages of the other three brothers are a complete mystery, as there are so many Cromptons in Bolton . Margaret married Matthew Seddon (my wife’s great grandfather), Matthew was to die with two of his sons in the Pretoria Pit disaster, and several other family members. Margaret died in 1941 in Bolton, and is in the same grave as her dear husband . ........... Note I have edited out personal information. Since I have not asked permission to copy to this list. Mary Crompton's (wife of James Crompton, the son of Catherine) immigration record in 1855 also says that she was from "Spring Gardens", and James & Mary's Marriage Certificate says that they were both from "Spring Gardens".
