Could you tell me if she was related to Samuel Crompton, the inventor of the mule Jenny? I do shows about wool, sheep, spinning, etc..., and it would be very useful to me if you could tell me if they were relatives, and in this case, to what degree? Grand daughter? I would be very obliged if you could answer thet request, Please, don't mind the mistakes as I'm French, Thanks a lot for your help,

    2. Just spotted this ..........................(** have removed his private contact info) Lancashire Times - Thursday, 6 August 2009 By Margaret Mottram LOOKING FOR DESCENDENTS OF THE CROMPTONS Brendan O’Farrell of ** Southport, Mersyside, is looking for descendents of any of the children of John Crompton (b 1858), Joseph Crompton (b 1867),Peter Crompton (b 1861), and Margaret Crompton (b 1864). Parents were Ann or Hannah Crompton nee Farrell, born in Ireland, and Joseph Crompton born in Darcy Lever, Bolton, c 1826. Joseph was a carter (flour) and died in 1885 in an unmarked grave in St Stephen’s, Lever Bridge . I have the parents marriage, but apart from Margaret the marriages of the other three brothers are a complete mystery, as there are so many Cromptons in Bolton . Margaret married Matthew Seddon (my wife’s great grandfather), Matthew was to die with two of his sons in the Pretoria Pit disaster, and several other family members. Margaret died in 1941 in Bolton, and is in the same grave as her dear husband . ** Derek Crompton London south-east

    3. Hello Peter For an explanation of the various "by certificate, by licence..." terms used post 1837, see: http://home.clara.net/dixons/Certificates/marriages.htm#COL9 In 1799 all non-(Jewish or Quaker) legal marriages were in the CofE, of course, so I believe the terms said to apply to Church of England marriages only would have applied at the time. 2. Hi All There is a PR at St Mary's, Bury for the marriage by licence on 23 August 1799 of James BRIDGE, bachelor, to Mary PILKINGTON, spinster. I believe that James is my g-g-gfather, and may be the James BRIDGE (bastard) baptised at St Mary's on 8 Nov 1780 (b. 13 Oct 1780). Mother Mary CROMPTON. What does 'marriage by licence' mean. It may have been a shotgun marriage as some Henry was born on 30 November 1799. Do any listers have any further info please? Peter BRIDGE Herefordshire (ex-Nelson, Lancs)

    3. Hi Derek Yes reported. His wife Elizabeth and two children were living in Pleasant St, Bolton with Elizabeth's parents. Apparently 17 Harrison St, Ancoats was not a workhouse but the Manchester Municipal Males Lodging House. What threw me was the sheer number of lodgers - 372 from all over the world. Some lodging house! At some stage Moorhouse returned to his family in Bolton, where he died in 1936. 2. This just arrived in my s**m folder. I am trying to trace Fred Crompton’s family (my father). He was born in 1918 in Norden to John Edmund Crompton and Eleanor Crompton (nee Barton). Other than that he was the youngest of 9 children, I know very little of his family. He relocated to South Africa during the 2nd world war which is where I was born and grew up. I remember a visit from one of his sisters, Anne many years back. Have you come across the family in your research? If not, can you give me some advice on where to start. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer.******unsigned**** Dorset is not a hot spot for us CROMPTON',s. So the likely hood of finding one in a directory or marriage records belonging to you would be high. Was your father in the military -navy? On FreeBMD the only Fred for that year......... have you a certificate?
